2TB drive for $99 @ Harvey Norman

710

OK, so someone else submitted it and got Mod: Foul language for it. I'm not so worried. :P

Just heard the ad on the radio - HN have a 2TB external drive for $99. No brand mentioned, no other details.

Take it or leave it, your choice.

Update: Apparently the same drive as the previous deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36904) and a limit of 1 per customer.

Yeah, I simply decided I couldn't be XXXXX with the XXXX-storm that arises from the people who take this site way too seriously. ;)

    hey buddy, good deal! :p

    • Thanks Ashlea and Ryang.

I missed the first one, Ashlea, so didn't get a chance to join in the frenzy!

Maybe all the "neggas" were negged in their (Ozbargain) youth and in turn pounce on the nubies?

      Onwards & upwards! :)

      • +2

it wasnt supposed to be a play on words

    • +4

Yeah some people just take life, themselves and this forum way too seriously. Maybe if we posted more deals on prune juice and preparation H we could get everyone smiling again…

      • -1

can we still say "negga" ??

If so, it's a great term

      • We should find some deals on prozac.

  • +7

Ha - fair comment - Thanks also to Ashlee who was the pathfinder on this… Maybe a little consideration and care not to come out guns blazing might just see more deals being shared, which is what the site is all about.

If in doubt people should report a deal, let the mods look at it and make a call. maybe also look at a posters history before slamming them.

Ashlee - I totally understand the frustration, but have to remove the words that are inappropriate for the general rating of the site.

    • +4

      Fair call ;)

  • Yeap wohoo. Heard the ad thrice this morning now =P

If its the Samsung G3 Station model as reported below, then it's NOT the same model. I've the Story model (no problems), but the G3 model has several reports of problems.

      Maybe different stores, different models?

      • On Whirlpool there's a thread suggesting mixed experiences with these drives.

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1489670

      • the one I bought is contains the HD204UI is this G4? have no idea but Greenpossum below says they are newer drives. The date on the drive says 12/2010

        2TB Samsung StoryStation HX-DU020EB/G6

So maybe different to the ones on whirlpool

        • HX-DU020EB/G6

I got the same drive purchased from previous deal and have no problem.

  • Yeah confirmed same Samsung drive & only 1 per customer.

  • Purchasers, let us know how they go..
I've had 3x of these exact drives fail, in less a week of use..

    • +2

      how did you use it?

      • +3

        blender - terrabyte smoothie o_0

      • To store my ripped movies.
I literally copied the vids on, went to use it the next day. Dead.
        (Less that a weeks usage!)

Have Samsung 2TB HDD from MSY different model for more than 3 months, no problem yet.

    • +22

might be unrelated to your issue, but just wanted to point out that they are not waterproof

  • Decent deal! Good work.

  • +9

    Good deal!
BTW, I just bought the HP simpledrive 2TB from BigW @ 118 with free shipping. And with the paypal 10% refund, it comes down to $106.2. Also not a bad alternative.

    • Is this 10% refund still up? :O
Edit: Looks like they're out of stock.

    • They contain the Samsung F4 5400rpm drives in them. What is "shit" about that?

    • +2

You would have more credibility if you were specific about why it's no good. As it is, you're just guessing, you don't even know the drive brand, by your own admission.

    • Lol the Samsung F4s (which is what you will get in these externals) and Western Digital EARS Green drives are the two best STORAGE drives out there. Nothing shit at all about them.

  • Could someone post a direct link, can't find it on the site. Thanks.

  • +2

Just returned from my local HN. For anyone that is interested, the drive on offer is the 2TB Samsung G3 Station HX-DU020EC.

    • +1

If its the G3 station. Then there have been lots of reported problems with this external Samsung G3 model. The transfer rate starts of fast and quickly becomes realy slow.

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1489670&#

I got the previous HN $99 deal the samsung story station 2.0. Its still going strong with the F4 Green drive.

Other reported Samsung Story Station and Seagate externals also being sold.

  • They contain the Samsung F4 hard drives in there…. 4k sectors… May not work with WinXP?

    • There are solutions, e.g. this:

      http://www.sfnomad.com/?p=68

If they contain the HD204UI drive, then I think I'm in for one.

      • I think they are samsungs?

        Check out : http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40093

        • Yes, I know they are Samsungs. The HD203UI was the older 2TB drive with 4 platters. I think it's out of production anyway. The HD204UI has 3 platters which should be a bit more efficient and faster.

        • Confirming the one I bought just now has the HD204UI

          Date of Manufacture 12/2010

        • HD204UI

Where can you find that #?

        • +2

undo the 4 screws on the side of the case and gently lift off. No seals etc so it s/b ok

        • Ahhh…thanks
Been looking on the box, under the drive and only found HX-DU020EB/G6

  • +4

good deal and a +1 for Ashlea for being the unwitting cannon fodder for the haters out there

    • what did I miss?…

usually I am on here everyday, I have missed the last couple of days though….

  • Ive got 2 of these from the post-xmas sales….. no problems with them whatsoever, one currently at 1.6TB full. Great for my unlimited adsl2 ;)

  • Is this everywhere? I want to get one but Im in Queensland. Harvey Norman Everton Park don't know anything about it.

Edit: Aspley know about it and have a few in stock!

  • Just got 1 from Mel QV HV
    Good price

  • I just picked up one from Aspley.

  • FYI none in the Gold Coast HN according to the person I spoke with… best they had as a 1.5TB for $108 (or was it $107, dont remember now) …

    • Might want to recheck. My store Erina NSW said they knew nothing, until I showed them the ozbargain post (the other one where is says they have them in the city store) then came back and said ok, $99. Original price said $198

      • Well I did show them the other deal, as at first the guy said we can match and make deals… but he said that he certainly could not match the 2TB with 3 license of McAffee deal :)

I did not follow up on the $99 one, but given the piles of 1TB and 1.5TB HDs they had on special (at least 60-80 of each on the floor) I suspect at the very least they were wanting to shift those before letting any 2TBs go…

  • 5 left on the floor at QV 10 minutes ago.

  • Only two left when I went to HN in the Melbourne CBD before.

  • Also my previous Samsung drive has been great, uses less power than my other externals too (actually spins down for starters)

  • So for the people who bought this in Melbourne. Has anyone got the Story station (with the analogue knob) or are they all G3 stations?

I really prefer the look of the Story station.

    Thanks

    • +1

      Story Station.

  • Will try my local HN tomorrow

  • Caught this on the radio. Just called Fortitude Valley HN. Had no idea of the deal or even brand of hdd. Said it "might start tomorrow"

    • i might try FV

  • Brisbane city had a few Samsung Story Stations for $99 in stock today at noon. :)

When I asked at North Ryde HN, the assistant it had been OzBargained (his exact word) out of stock. Hahaha.

But maybe the sale hasn't started yet and he meant the previous promotion? Did the radio ad say it was on sale NOW?

    • +1

When I asked at North Ryde HN, the assistant it had been OzBargained (his exact word)

      LOL
he is probably from Ozb, love that assistant
the general public would be like, wth, ???Ozbargained???
      LOL

    • +1

      Hahahaha, I love that guy.

  • Brisbane Garden City HN have lots

  • plenty in HN broadway, Sydney

  • Went to HN in Thomastown Victoria, no $99 2TB drives there. Looks like this deal is limited?

  • HN Preston Vic, still has plenty.
Just bought one about 30 mins ago.

  • No more at Chatswood HN.

  • Just bought a Story Station. Last one too @ HN Caringbah
Was marked at $129 but at counter was $99 as advertised on radio.

  • None at Highpoint HN.

Surprise, surprise, people are finding that Harvey Norman do not have any stock. Did Harvey Norman offer any rain checks? Could it be that the Harvey Norman stores that say they don't know anything about the offered price, in fact just don't want to sell the item? Has anyone complained to the ACCC? Gerry you have done it again!

    • The thread shows a number of people, some established members (including a moderator) have purchased the drive.

      • Yes, of course some members bought the advertised product, but what about the members who went to the trouble of turning up to Harvey Norman outlets, only to be told, we don't know anything about it or we are sold out?

        • "We don't know anything about it" is, not impressive :S

Sold out - I'm not too clear on the law for that; is it evidence of sufficient quantity is satisfactory?

        • +1

"is it evidence of sufficient quantity is satisfactory?"

Basically, yes. If a retailer wasn't allowed to have "sales" without having enough stock for everyman + his dog, then you would never see sales.. Sometimes they just want to move as much stock as possible and ship what they expect to sell to each store, sometimes it isn't enough.

Nothing to see here - move along.

        • Given the rate they were flying out the door, i'd be surprised if they weren't sold out.

  • Wasn't there somewhere else I saw on here that was doing this for $89?
