  • Not bad, it's $1499 at Umart: https://www.umart.com.au/Acer-Predator-X34P-G-Sync-34-inch-C…

Anyone using Ultrawides that can confirm game support nowadays? I remember Ultrawide being letterboxed in most games due to lack of support a few years ago when I was looking at buying one.

    • take a look at the LG 32GK850G-B, its a great gaming monitor (2560x1440 res, 144hz/165hz, g-sync)

      • +2

It is VA though, compared to IPS for the X34P.

      • Thanks anyway. I already have the Acer Predator XB271HU and I love it. Probably won't upgrade until OLED/4K/HDR/Gsync/Ultrawide is out and under $1500. Couple of years I'd say!

    • +2

Most AAA games these days support ultra wides. Non-AAA can be hit and miss, but if they're based on a standard engine (Unity, Unreal, etc.) it's unlikely there'll be problems.

I bought this monitor a few weeks ago, and so far I've used mine for Rocket League, PUBG, No Man's Sky, and a few other indie games. Haven't had any major issues, although I have noticed a bug in NMS where opening the inventory causes the framerate to drop massively when playing in ultrawide. Seems a bug specific to NMS though.

      • There's fixes for most titles even if there's no support.

The worst that can happen is you play at 2560x1440 with black borders on the sides.

          A fate worse than death

    • all my games are in 21:9 now [cod:ww2, destiny 2, overwatch, BF1, black ops 4 beta, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, etc]

    • Yo. I'm using this monitor and everything has been dandy. Some older games you just have to use a different res (i.e. 2560x1080), but from my experience, anything made in the last decade seems to have 3440x1440 support.
My biggest issue with it is that when watching video on it, you've got a lot of black space on either side of the frame. You get used to it though…

      • when watching video on it, you've got a lot of black space on either side

True. If you watch films and a very limited amount of TV you can have 21:9 aspect ratio no letterboxing.

        • Yep, movies in 21:9 on this are awesome.

  • What is the best, or should I say, the minimum GPU required to run games at 3440 x 1440? YT videos say GTX 1080 Ti but that's way out of my budget after spending a grand on a monitor like that…

    • If budget is a massive issue you are probably better going AMD and Freesync.

      G-sync is very expensive.

For this monitor a 1080 stock should run most games reasonably well.

    • I was using a 1070 for this res but you could go lower, it depends on how much image quality your happy losing.

Generally speaking for strenuous titles I could run games with medium to high settings but no AA or 2xAA only and get 60 - 90 FPS.

I switched to a GTX 1080 Ti though.

      • Thanks. Time to wait for the GPU prices to drop further then.

I bought this one that I posted as a deal, due to arrive tomorrow. Will see if it meets all the expectations I got from watching all the reviews.

    • I'm playing everything fine on my 970. Nothing is cranked up, and it's not taking advantage of the 120Hz, but it'll do me just fine until the 11xx range is released.

      • The 11xx range is actually the 2xxx range - and they are on pre-order now, shipping this month.

Well that was a quick wait! The RTX's. I think I'll be waiting and hoping for a bit of a Christmas sale at the current prices… Yikes.

        • @ToastySteve:

Interestingly AMD aren't even going to try to compete in 2018 with these new cards.

        • +1

@aussietivoman: That's a shame. I was just reading about how AMD had ruined ATI when they acquired it, and the rise in price of graphics cards was largely due to Nvidia having little competition. Guess that's getting worse. :(

        • @ToastySteve:

I think it was 2014 when AMD's market share fell to below 20%.

          Same could happen again.

We are lucky Intel has integrated graphics in CPU's or we'd be being robbed even worse.

    • It really depends on what graphics settings and frame rates you want.

You can go as low as you want so long as you're happy to watch the frames be slowly painted on your screen pixel by pixel.

  • I have this monitor - got it last week for $1330 fml.

Great monitor!! I only have a gtx1070 but have had no issues pushing past 100fps with the likes of Pubg, Bf1 etc

  • +1

I really want this monitor but the price is eye watering.
Can any owners of this monitor confirm if it makes your hair go like this:?
Is the immersion factor, and extra screen real estate and FOV in games over the xb271hu worth the extra cost?

    • I recently bought the X34 (previous model) and have been using it for about a week.

Ultrawide is really nice, that extra space on the sides is just as handy as people say and it's really nice to have (not necessarily life-changing, and I could go back to 16:9 if I needed to, but 21:9 is really satisfying).

The FOV in games does make the experience more enjoyable, but the only thing I would be wary of is that this monitor has a very big stand and if you've got a shallow desk, you might be sitting too close to the screen for it to make a huge difference. I had to buy a $50 monitor mount to position the screen further away from my face, which helped immensely.

All up, I'm very happy with my purchase. Worth the money? That's debatable, it's definitely beautiful but I could probably have done well enough with a Freesync monitor from someone like Kogan. If you have the money and aren't afraid to splash it, by all means go for gold.

  • You got the link to the alienware mentioned in the OP? Does the AW have the edge over the X34P with better QC?

At $2099 before discounts the Alienware is overpriced. Even at $1600 on special I prefer the Acer for value.

Subjective opinion only I much prefer the Alienware brand to Acer - my experience with Dell monitors in the last 20 years has been very good, and the few times warranty claims were required they were well handled too (except once i got a reconditioned not new replacement monitor)….
