This is a far better deal.
    Much better IPS screen.
    Much more powerful cpu
much more powerful discrete graphics with HDMI2.0
Though I assume battery life will be shorter.

    • +1

Assuming you are not gaming on battery, the battery life on this is supposed to be quite good. I think one review was 7 hours on movie-watching type test?

      • +1

Yep - battery is ~76% larger on this model which should be plenty to compensate for the more power-hungry components.

    • The best things about these is that they have giant ventilation channels which mean your gpu and cpu get throttledless. Real gaming laptops like alienwares or top end Asus g series have these features. A thin laptop running games is going to suck due to heat throttling or will just melt the crap out of your computer very quickly.

I cringe when I see 1060 or 1070ms thrown in tiny laptops. You will have no finger prints within a week from them being seared off.

  • doesnt look like it's possible to configure the spec on this unit via the ebay page?

    • Not possible. You need to buy through Dell’s website to configure

      • thought that might be the case - all good, thx for the reply.

  • Its not a bad laptop. What are peoples opinions on Dell laptops for gaming?
I have always been told Dell laptops aren't the greatest.

    • -7

As far as I'm concerned Dell & Gaming are mutually exclusive.

Dell makes some great laptops for work and school so it's not that they aren't good it's just that their strength isn't gaming.

      • +1

They own Alienware so you could say gaming SHOULD be a strength of theirs, it's just this laptop isn't a gaming laptop, despite the discreet GPU. It's more a high-end business laptop which would be ideal for those doing graphic design on one.

        • Ok I'm excluding Alienware from their line up. That's like saying Toyota is good at making high end cars because they own Lexus.

Quite a meaty unit regardless though.

        • It's really not a business laptop - compared to the build quality of Dell's Latitude and Precision range, this is definitely a step downwards. It's more like a consumer-grade machine with beefed up specs for gaming.

And speaking as an owner with >200 hours of gaming on an Inspiron Gaming laptop, it's great..for the low price. It's certainly not going to compete with $2k rigs, but it's very serviceable.

Linus Tech Tips has reviewed a couple of the most recent models if you're looking for a more comprehensive review - spoiler: he quite likes them.

        • @klaw81: Oh I certainly agree it's great, I have one as my gaming machine on my work trips, but I do not call it a gaming rig, despite the specs.

        • @Cyphar: I guess it depends on your standards and expectations. The specs and price are a good indication of what you should expect from it.

It's nowhere near as good as my desktop, but it can play e-sports titles like DOTA and Rocket League very nicely, and even runs Battlefield and PUBG at half-decent settings. I'd still call that a gaming rig - it's still as good as most consoles.

I have a friend who uses his as a business laptop, bouncing around in his ute all day and being used in pretty hard conditions. It's held up fairly well the the beating it gets, but the hinge is starting to get a bit floppy and the keyboard and trackpad have been worn by dirty/abrasive fingers. You wouldn't see that in a Latitude or Precision, which are made of sterner stuff.

        • @klaw81:

I guess it depends on your standards and expectations.

I mean, it's subjective I guess but for many, when you say "Gaming Laptop", you are referring to a well built, often over the top design with better cooling and LED's. Not an Inspiron with a 1050ti. That's why I like it though. I can take it with me on my trips to Japan or Singapore, bust it out in the office over there and draw no attention to it. Nobody bats an eye until I play Siege on it :P

        • @Cyphar:
What kind of frames and settings you on? Would think about a similar machine for the same cheeky purpose.

        • +1

@ozbjunkie: It's not my main gaming rig (Which is a much more powerful desktop) but I have it set to low/med w/VSync on and I get a stable 60FPS dropping down to about 50FPS in heavy action. Even at those GFX levels, it still looks great. It can run quite hot though.

For somebody that isn't confident building a desktop and want gaming on the go for a budget price, this will definitely power you through for a while

        • @Cyphar:

          Nice, thanks for the reply.

      • +1

"As far as I'm concerned Dell & Gaming are mutually exclusive"

        What bollocks.

Dell's Inspiron Gaming lineup isn't anything particularly special, but they're well made and have good specs for the price. Performance is very similar to other budget gaming laptops like the Lenovo Y700, Acer Nitro 15 and HP's & Asus's offerings. The only real downside to the older models is that the screen is a bit dull.

When you combine that with the fact that Dell's warranty is the best in the business, they're pretty hard to walk past.

Note that this bargain is an outgoing model, now being replaced by the newly branded G3, G5 and G7 range.

        • -2

Don't get me wrong it's a good laptop.
High end business laptop would suit better as previously said.

In other words: it's not a gaming laptop. It's an Inspiron laptop with a good CPU/GPU in it. There's a difference.

        • +1

@pennypincher98: Sorry, what do you mean by "It's an Inspiron laptop with a good CPU/GPU in it. There's a difference."?

Gaming needs a good GPU, CPU, decent screen and good cooling. This laptop meets all those requirements.

If you can find a better gaming laptop for this price, then I'd be very interested and if you posted it here you could probably get quite a few upvotes.

        • @BenR31415: Well, that's the thing it's not a gaming laptop… It's a great laptop for the price but it's not for gaming.

Gaming needs a good GPU, CPU, decent screen and good cooling.

How about a good keyboard? If you are using the arrow keys a lot, they need to be bigger than they are.
You are right when you say gaming needs a decent screen, this is a bit dull and colours aren't great. Read reviews if you don't believe me.

        • @pennypincher98:

I have read tons of reviews on this particular laptop, I was strongly considering one when I realised that the weight would be too much for me to carry around every day. I've used it multiple times from multiple friends.

The keyboard is not the best in the world, but it is extremely solid, one of Dell's better ones. The arrow keys are a little squished, but from typing and brief gaming it is fine. The other thing is that when gaming, the arrow keys are barely used at all, WASD is much more useful.

Regarding the keyboard, the early models had a TN panel, which looked like garbage. Dell was getting a bunch of bad press about that, so they released an option for $50 more to get a much better IPS screen. This is the one that this is using. I've looked at the upgraded one, it's not bad at all.

    • +2

You've been mis-informed. Dell make excellent laptops, but you get what you pay for. The cheap laptops aren't wonderful, but neither are any of the similarly-priced competitors.

Dell goes toe to toe with any of its competitors in the high end - the XPS range is a genuine competitor with the 13" and 15" MacBook Pros at higher price points (with far better outright performance at a lower price) and their Latitude and Precision lineups are widely used by industry.

Also their warranty is amazing - the help-line is actually helpful, and repairs are usually done in your home/business rather than sending the machines away.

  • How does this stack up vs the recent Lenovo e series deals? Screen size aside.

    • +1

The Lenovo uses a Vega GPU. The 1050ti in this laptop shits all over it

  • +4

I purchased one of these from one of the previous deals - Similar specs.

    Arrived within 2 weeks.

Sent the original one back as the Trackpad was faulty and the backlit KB didn't work - The Dell replacement process was excellent!

    Replacement arrived within 2 weeks

Ended up sending the second one back as the screen Bezel was just far too large for my liking - And I personally found the RED backlit KB distracting.

Again, the Dell returns process was excellent!

To be honest, I would have liked USB 3.1 & USB-C - But neither are an option on this device - Which means its a fairly old system board/design.

I bought one from the last sale posted. I've found it to be a really good laptop. I play a lot of Dota 2, which it can handle very well on the highest settings (it does get hot and noisy but I imagine all gaming laptops would).

I also do a lot of work on it an the battery life is actually a good 5-7 hours depending on my settings. On top the that it feels like a very sturdy laptop.

    happy Ozbargaining!

If i wanted to upgrade the ram to 16gb, is it best to throw the existing 8gb and put in a paired kit or can i add in a single 8gb stick - recommendations?

    • +2

It is a rare case for compatibility issue in memory. You can open the back to check the brand of memory for issue avoidance. Get a Kingston shall be a safe option.

      • Thanks Benny

  • +2

Ive not been ecstatic about mine. 1st boot looped, they came out and replaced mboard. Then it took ages to boot. They replaced it, and super annoyingly, so does my replacement. This happened after a second hdd and ram were added…

I reckon its good for gaming. Doom runs great, as does the new collosus. Just 40 seconds plus to boot, everytime…

Most annoying issue is that the screen touches the keys. This means ive got a permanent mark right across the middle of the screen.

    • Will this explain why they have a lot of refurb stock in their outlet on this model every now and then? Seems the quality on this 7567 is a bit hit and miss …

Last dell i got from outlet been pretty good, last me 2 years then sold it and lost $50 only! This time my son wants a GTX1060, so we settled and want to give ASUS a try instead. But sure will go back to Dell again especially the "Alienware"

    Hey Guys,
sorry for the pretty vague and probably often asked question.
Looking for a laptop. just for word processing, internet browsing, netflix etc. No Gaming.
be nice to have a good build, good screen (touch preferably) good size screen say 14". Also like the fold back tablet/'yoga' style
    approx 700-800 dollars to spend.
Any help appreciated. any offers on current POLLEN deal? also be good if Aus stock as for TRS soon.
    Thanks in advance

  • 256 GB is not much space and won't hold many games, what is the best way to add more storage?

    • This model has a M.2 slot and a SATA port available. I would assume M.2 is used in this case. You can get a 860 EVO or MX500 for storage expansion.

      • Oh ok, how come I don't see any mention of these ports in the specs?

        • Because it's an internal port, not necessarily something that Dell wants to advertise to the end consumer.

  • I've got this exact laptop, but with a 256gb SSD + 2TB Hdd, also 16Gb Ram, I love it! one of my best dells I've owned happy with it :D

    • So there is room for 2 HDD inside the laptop?

    • The review unit is sporting a GTX1060 Max-Q which is significantly better than the 150ti.

  • Would this be good for editing photos and a little bit of video (mainly just colour grading and starwipes), and does it come in a smaller version? I have external monitors, so screen quality isn't a huge deal. Thanks!

    • I have this question too. Looking at running standard Adobe CC apps (Ai, PSP) …but also After Effects, Premier Pro. Would I need to up the RAM for starters. Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks

  • This is a great price to performance laptop. I game on a laptop with a 960m and it's really enjoyable. When you turn ultra settings to a mix of medium to high, the games can still look good and run at 30+ fps on slower GPUs.

The last time this deal was posted (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/398827), some comments mentioned the 1x1 WiFi might be an issue..
But it has 802.11ac which has a max speed of 433Mbps over 1x1, so that's not too bad right?
I didn't have time to read this all but it seems to be a great explanation of AC wifi… https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents…
Can a techxpert let me know if the WiFi on this will be fast enough for HD Netflix, bit of CS:GO?
    Cheers

  • Thinking of getting this to game a bit here and there.
Is the 1060 a lot better than the 1050 ti?

What about the 7700HQ in other dell options compared to 7300HQ. Is the 7700HQ old compared to the newer 8 series CPUs?
I plan to keep the laptop for a long while.

    • 1050ti is a very decent gaming GPU and you can easily play current games at decent visuals and acceptable fps. The 1060 is significantly better, 1060 is also the start of support for VR. So if you want it as a primary gaming device for a few years, 1060 is a minimum.

The 7300HQ is easily powerful enough for gaming at 60fps or less, laptop screens are typically 60hz, so higher fps is pointless, the 7700HQ is marginally better.

    • Checkout the comparison between the 2 GPU here:
      https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeForce-GTX-1060-Laptop-vs-GeF…

      • Thanks for the replies. I also forgot to ask are the screens on these half decent? I want to edit photos as well and would prefer a decent screen.

And are these deals pretty good for the 1060 laptops. I can wait if they aren't the best going around.

  • Any options from the crowd on how to run this through a Zip type payment system rather than up front cash?

  • Few refurbs in stock for $869 in the same specs if anyone wants to really cheap out.

  • +2

Very good laptop. I have the i7 16gb RAM with 256gb SSD + 1TB hard drive. When used for general browsing, I hit 7-8hrs on battery. With the 1050ti card, it handles Rise of the Tomb Raider very well on high settings

  • Out of stock now

  • +1

Sorry, I bought the last one.

  • Damn this will teach me to leave it until Monday to order!

  • FFS, estimated delivery date 03/10/18! But I want it nooooow

  • It’s back under the other 20 off code

  • I bought this one, from this specific deal. Took 2 weeks for it to be delivered from the date I bought it. After 4 days there was an issue with memory and Windows kept rebooting. Tried to do a factory reset and it crashed during that. Called Dell on the 5th day to sort out. Options were to (1) have it repaired - someone will come and replace the memory and ssd, but no guarantee parts are available (2) get a replacement, up to 14 working days (3) get a refund - email on refund process to be sent out within 24-48 hours. I went with option 3 after learning option 1 was still conditional on there being available stock.

Customer service was pretty decent, otherwise I won't be buying Dell again anytime soon.
