[Insufficient Details] Jetstar - "Return for Free" - Annual Sale

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Received an email short time ago, Sale starts at Midnight Eastern time

Not many details just yet apart from the T&C listed in the email which have included below, but based on the timing of it and the previous deals from the same time the last 3 years there is a pretty good chance its the "return for free" Japan sale.

2015 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211613
2016 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/266280
2017 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/329517

Availability is limited (not available on all flights or days). All travel must be completed within travel periods specified. Jetstar Starter fare rules apply, checked baggage not included. Limited changes are permitted, charges may apply. No fees apply if you are entitled to a refund or alternative flight under the Australian Consumer Law or Conditions of Carriage. Mod 1pm: This deal should have been removed initially due to insufficient details for upcoming deal, however was not reported to us. Airfare Deals Guidelines. It appears the email received from OP was referencing a Bali Holiday Package Buy 1 Get 1 Free deal which expires 9/25 as stated in this deal post. As it stands there is no definite indication that there is a Buy 1 Get 1 Free deal for Airfares/Japan or when it would go ahead, if that deal does become available, then it can be posted as a new deal with sufficient details. Note: moderators are not saying any particular sale will go ahead or not, we are simply saying that there are insufficient details for this deal post to remain as it stands, any sale with sufficient details should be posted as a new deal when there is as per the guidelines previously linked.

Thanks for posting!! I haven’t received any email from Jetstar - this is why I love ozbargain!! I’ve been waiting for this - hope it’s Japan!! :)

    • I hope so to.

    • +2

Just be aware many flights are via Gold Coast or Cairns. Jetstar will make you collect luggage and check in again.

      • +5

THIS!, we had to run from the domestic terminal to the international terminal in cairns weather. AND WE MISSED OUR FLIGHT!

        • Ouch!

What did Jetstar offer? Did they cover accomodation and put you on the next flight 24hrs later?

What about you arriving in Japan one day later, and stuffing up the beginning of your trip?

      • Had to do this when arriving in Cairns. GC was just a transit.

  • +5

Yep last 3 years i have snagged return free to tokyo. Sub $400. Cheaper than airasia, also tix from tokyo to seoul you can get for $60-$80

    • -1

Hi, can I know, which airline did you book from Tokyo to Seoul? Also a friend told me Korea is similar as Japan, so not worth it to go there, is it true for you?

      • +6

I don't think your friend noticed the differences. Don't think South Koreans would agree. If you were suddenly dropped in those countries, I think you would notice big differences between them.

I have visited Japan many times, South Korea & China a couple of times for many weeks to months each. Each have their attractions for the traveller. I visited those 3 neighbours to understand the similarities & differences in the region. There is a shared history especially through trade, but also war - which still has an effect.

Yes there are similarities between the 3. But there are a lot of differences. South Korea has a quite different culture, ways of thinking, building style, people, food, terrain, & look of the place. Even within the country there are noticeable differences often seen in the food. But then I don't stop at the city, but explore a country. To me, many cities can look alike.

But, like everywhere, it depends on why you are travelling… That determines what you see. Different people will have differing opinions on any country.

        • +3

For a different cultural (& religious - doesn't require Buddhist belief) experience, try a Temple Stay. Overnight stay in a monastery, mine was in a mountain forest, waking to the temple bell for optional chanting. There was a class in lotus lanterns, which we carried with a candle inside through the forest that night. Tasty vegetarian food with seaweed. My pretty guide was very concerned I could go without meat for 1 day, as all Westerners eat meat! It was wonderful.

Spicer food (Japanese generally dislike spicy, but Wasabi is loved). Multiple side dishes when you order 1 dish - 19 side dishes in one town!

And a different alcoholic drink - Makgeolli. A farmers simple cloudy rice wine. It's a cheap drop, which I sometimes drank at a plastic table outside a GS25 convenience store in Seoul, sharing with people who would join me.

I find Japanese more willing to help a traveller in the street. Both countries teach English, and to assist Foreigners (European looking ones do get treated better, sometimes embarrassingly so).

Koreans are more likely to speak out, Japanese are usually too shy.
Sometimes old Korean women have started shouting at people & me - but locals were equally frightened.

And locals may comment on your size & suggest a change of diet - when I walk along the street in some places!! I asked my Australian educated S Korean diplomat friend who responded "they are only wanting to help, it's not rude here". It can take years of visits before a Japanese friend would dare to make such personal comments.

Efficiency is a key word in South Korea. It has a long history, which changes a country & it's people.

A culture that gave up it's use of thousands of complex Chinese characters to develop its own efficient 24 Hangul characters arranged in blocks of 3 - to make written communication available to all - that's very different!! And that it was a creation in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great, against the advice of the court officials (powerful from the knowledge of Chinese characters), to make communication democratic - unheard of😱

Japan still uses Chinese characters, but introduced easier written language systems, which confusingly meant learning all of them.
          Kanji (kahn-jee) 漢字
          Hiragana (hee-rah-gah-nah) ひらがな
          Katakana (ka-ta-ka-na) カタカナ
Koreans would find that very inefficient!

Korea developed moveable metal type printing before Guttenberg in Europe - a surprise to me.

And the "turtle boats" - first iron clad boats for war, that defeated the Japanese invaders hundreds of years ago.

But strangely the country seemed to he defended long ago by inscribed rocks (Stele) saying basically "we are here, go away", or carving so many wooden Buddhist Sutras (now a National Treasure) to prevent invasion from the North.

It really is a different place, if you look. I love South Korea and Japan. They are very different.

        • @Infidel:

"Korea developed moveable metal type printing before Guttenberg in Europe - a surprise to me."

"And the "turtle boats" - first iron clad boats for war, that defeated the Japanese invaders hundreds of years ago."

Please do careful about Korean, as they claim everything first coming from Korea (South Korea strictly). They already clam many things from China, Confucius, mid autumn festival and many more all come from Korea. One thing certainly first is from recent survey, Korean has the shortest penis in Asia countries. They got what they wanted and no other countries are claiming this glory.

        • @kl2999
None of what you claim takes away from South Korea being an interesting, different place to visit.

That information you question was from National Museum of Korea.

Your source demonstrating that information is incorrect?

Penis size?? Your focus on it surely shows your hatred for South Korea! What's that got to do with anything, unless you are looking for big ones? As an interested traveller, not a sex tourist, I don't go to a country to look at penis size😱
          And who cares anyway!

But, South Koreans did spread incorrect information (propaganda) due to their hatred of North Korea. I met many South Koreans studying here as students around 1990. All told me North Koreans ate their babies. They could not believe it was propaganda, to enforce hatred of often their own family in North Korea. Very sad.

I run my questions past a diplomat friend based in Seoul, who often has a different view to the Government.

I was asked to teach in a school in China years ago, but the students answer to "who invented the…" was always the beloved Chairman… How could I teach when the answer was prescribed?

And we're not immune to not telling the whole truth in Australia either.

  • They no longer fly mel to tokyo direct which is annoying so I have to double pay for baggage :(

    • Why do you have to pay double for the baggage?

      • Mel>Syd Domestic>Syd Int>Japan

        • +1

          Oh ok. Thanks.

        • +1

Mel-CNS-Narita Last time I did the trip.

        • @DaTa:

I don't think you double pay for your luggage unless you check out your luggage at Sydney. Otherwise it's just transit. I did mel-cairns-narita and only paid once. well twice given it was a return.

        • That's not the JQ route from Melbourne. They go MEL > CNS > NRT or MEL > OOL > KIX.

        • +1

          @Cyphar:
Um there is no ool> KIX route, only CNS> KIX.

Possibly handy for your trip: Book an Airbnb Stay over $250 and Get a $25 Jetstar Flight Voucher
    Expires in 11 days!
Voucher is sent AFTER your stay, for flight within 6 months.

Had great Airbnb accommodation in Japan.
But law has recently changed restricting availability to 180 days per year for properties. So good idea to book ahead as supply may be short closer to arrival date.

Just did some local Airbnb bookings, so flight voucher won't be available for this sale. Broke bookings up into just over $250 packages for max vouchers.

    • I've had awesome experiences with AirBnB in Japan, really gets you to appreciate life there.

However, currently Japan is going through an AirBnB crackdown with 80%+ listings being taken down: http://www.traveller.com.au/airbnb-in-japan-close-to-80-per-…

A friend of mine got his AirBnB in Fukuoka cancelled 5 days into his trip, so he had to deal with an awkward situation where he was being kicked out of the house just as AirBnB refunded him.

      • Will likely settle down. Was a temporary blip when change in law came into effect. Similar restrictions elsewhere - including Sydney. But may restrict supply of accommodation available.

  • +2

Midnight start. Those Jetstar Marketing gurus are on the ball.

  • Wonder if there will be any flights from BNE or GC to Narita for March 2020.

    • Jetstar site won't take bookings that far in advance. Sales are for coming year at most. Try next year's sale.

2020 will be a very busy year for Tokyo with Olympics 24 Jul – 9 Aug so unlikely any cheap fares around those dates.

  • Wished it applied to domestic flights :P

    • Same. All those Melbourne supporters flying to Perth on Friday would love that!

      • Oh boy, what crappy deals. Hope I didn't cause the jinx

  • 😱😱😱

  • +1

I am waiting for Europe deals during Christmas.

    • You’ll be waiting a long time for a Jetstar sale to Europe.

  • Does this apply to domestic as well?

  • Is there any advertised travel period for the return for free flights?

  • +4

So probably nothing from Perth again……..:(

  • Do they have deals on Kuala Lumpur?

  • Is this only Japan and no New zealand?

  • So why exactly do you pay to be Club Jetstar members, if this sale is open to the general public at the same time?

    • maybe the public gets access to it slightly later than the club members.

Jetstar website says a sale is coming, but no other indication.

But the email I received has a countdown to midnight.

      • +1

I am a club member and timer is the same.

  • +16

Did some random digging on their website since.. procrastination:

On the page this deal is linked too, their website code contains assets and links named "bali-return-for-free" but no other countries.

Visiting the old japan return for free Link loads a deal page (usually loads to nothing) and has the following info:
Sale ends 11.59pm AEDT Sunday 7 October 2018
Travel Period: Between 5 February and 27 March 2019

Anyway take that information how you will (it is only random searching and piecing together information).
I guess we will find out officially at midnight :)

    • +1

      "bali-return-for-free" but no other countries.

      ┻━┻ ミヽ(ಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

    • My random hypothesis is that those bali-return assets are just the names of random generic travel images they are using on that page.

      • I’m thinking similar.
JQ15 to Osaka seems back to schedule with the partial reopening of KIX following Typhoon Jebi

Meanwhile I’m still contacting Jetstar daily since 7/9 trying to get their confirmation of my cancelled JQ15 flight so I can lodge my insurance claim. ☹️

        • Update. Got my letter of cancellation finally.

    • I received a similar email and it says Bali

  • Any chance for December flights?

  • Hoping Bali….

  • Domestic or only international guys?

    • +1

      Domestic guys as in Aussie?
International guys as in … nah I dont want to start a fire
