  • Considering iOS 4.3 will have a personal hotspot feature where you can use your iphone for 3g access for your Ipad (and other wi-fi enabled items too), will it really be worth anyone paying the extra for a 3g enabled device? Particulary as you need to have a separate plan for the Ipad with this feature?

    • +2

Yes, because ALL ipad owners have an iphone/android.

    • +6

The only bad thing about personal hotspot are:

      1. Burns your battery life like there is no tmr… Expect to lose roughly 20%+ per hour.
      2. All devices will be burning HOT! Use with caution!
      • +1

I wasn't aware of these negatives. Burning through battery like that will be a killer for me.

      • I haven't experienced these issues with running personal hotspot on my Android HTC Desire HD & even if this does occur on other devices I'm not sure you can draw the conclusion that it will occur when its available on the iPhone.

        • isn't the apple hotspot bluetooth though, as opposed to Wifi hotspot from android? looks cheap.

        • +1

Currently it is bluetooth… as of next week it will be a wifi hotspot.

        • +1

I've used personal hotspot for a few weeks now (although I haven't tried it with the 4.3 GM build released today) and jacku's comment is pretty much accurate in terms of battery life, although I wouldn't exactly describe the iPhone as being "burning hot" (it gets warm). You'll get between 4 and 6 hours on the battery depending on how much data you're using — it's probably a good idea to get a backup battery pack for the iPhone if you need to use personal hotspot frequently.

How long does the battery last when using WiFi Hotspot on your Desire HD? From what I'm reading the battery drain is pretty similar: http://www.oztechnews.com/2011/02/01/review-htc-desire-hd/

"I left the house with 100% battery, had 98% when I stepped onto the train and activated WiFi Hotspot, put the phone in my pocket and never activated the screen again. When I stepped off of the train, I had 73% battery left. That’s one quarter of the battery gone in just over an hour."

        • +1

i have plenty of issues… but mostly because its vodafail.

        • My Desire HD will last about 8-9 hours with the wifi hotspot on - which isn't bad considering it only lasts about 12 hours with it off (I know thats pathetic, but thats just the way it is) - but then I only use the data intermittently, even though its on all the time - maybe that makes a difference.

      • +9

No wonder they call it hotspot…

    • +2

The 3G iPads have a GPS chip in them too - the WiFi ones don't, if that matters to you.

      • +1

Yep, make sure get the modified Tomtom for the resolution. I saw my mate had it… Massive GPS lol

  • +3

reckon prices will drop further once it actually comes out rather than just tentative!

    • +1

They will fall more … but we had a big drop now in the last days. I would not hope for more drops in the next 3 months …
But in the end the value will drop to next to nothing … as with every electronic device.

I am happy with the refurbished price (close to the US price of $349) and bought one. I know it will be cheaper in a few months and when the iPad 3 comes out it will be maybe at a 150$. But still a fair price considering it was around 629 new just a week ago. I am happy to be one year behind with newest technology … usually you get the best value for money there.

And I did one "clever" thing: I already collected all the free iPad apps on special over the last year for my future iPad … so when it arrives in a few days I can load it with heaps of software. :-)

      • -1

the price drop would depend on units in the market place to sell thru..

i think these will belt out with the new price and the only stock available will probably be refurbed models.

this would apply especially to the cheapest models

  • -3

still not cheap enough for a first gen imo, lacking soo many features.

The 16gb costs less than an iphone 3G though, which still go for $400-$450 used on ebay.. but i guess iphones more popular and hold value better.

  • Can someone clarify what "Refurbished" means in this regard? Are they 2nd hand trade-ins?

    • +2

Looks like they are returns to the Apple shop (change of mind, faulty, packaging damaged, …)
Apple tests the products … puts in a new battery (!) and a outer shell and sell them as refurbished (that is at least what they say).

      From the website:
      Apple Certified Refurbished
We test and certify all Apple refurbished products and include a 1-year warranty.
All refurbished iPad models also include a brand new battery and outer shell.

    • refurbished are returned to Apple due to faults. They fix them up and salvage parts. They replace them with a new screen, battery and outer case.

Thing is, I just paid $249 for a refurbished iPhone 3G 16GB as my one died and it was outside of warranty period, so they offered me this. Now the pixels have gone, so looks like im gonna have to go and get another one! You get 3 months warranty on refurbished products.

      • +2

        3 Months?
"We test and certify all Apple refurbished products and include a 1-year warranty."

        • oh, well maybe this is different. For iphones if you are out of warranty they cannot fix it, so they offer you a refurbished phone for $249 which comes with 3 month warranty. It might be different because only people who hold an iphone are offered a refurb for this special price. With these Ipads it is an offer to the general public.

      • All Apple refurb has 1 year warranty.

  • Not bad but brand new ones now also only from $449

    Wi-Fi Models

    16GB - $449
    32GB - $579
    64GB - $689

    Wi-Fi + 3G

    16GB - $598
    32GB - $729
    64GB - $839

  • +3

for the cheapest model, only $60 diff from new (449-389)~! not good. refub should be at least $100 diff.

    • -1

time to bargain on gumtree for 280-300

      • thats my intention too!~ so funny some ppl still try to sell their 2nd hand ipad1 more than new ipad1 LOL
i recon ppl can get $250 for 2nd hand cheapest model.

  • +3

I got a refurb 3GS. Just as good as new to me, brand new outer case and battery.

I think it's a steal, and really, who needs a camera.

  • -1

    lol nice!!!

    • +1

      Good one!

  • -2

I have had three apple refurbished products - all were faulty - reburbished = junk or sloppy seconds

    • where did you purchased ? from apple store?

    • Which products? And since they would have been under warranty, what was the outcome

      • Ipods, all under warranty…

        • +3

I have a 4th Gen iPod with 40gb HDD purchased as refurb back in 2006, still going strong today. I am more than happy to buy a refurb product from Apple.

    • My personal experience, and the experience of every geek I've ever met is that Apple refurbs are just as good as new, if not better, because you walk away richer. We're your iPods hard drive based from back in the day? That would be the only possible exception..

    • +1

I have had very good reliability when buying Apple "refurbished products".

The 2 MacBook Pros that I got didn't look like refurbished products.

I believe that they were NEW - based on the packageing and condition of the MBPs … and a great deal to boot!!!

I have no hesitation in recommending Apple refurbished!!!

Wondering how many OzBargains I will need to save enough for an iPad2.

    • If you're only saving $1 per ozbargain you'll need another 800 bargains :P

  • +2

Anyone who just purchased at full retail (the old price scale) if you take it back within 14 days of purchase, you will get the difference in price refunded to you (in a normal RRP sense you will get $180). It's one GOOD thing that Apple do for their customers. It's on their website. Also saw an article on NEWS.COM

    • Now if they just extend that 14 days to three months… :D

  • -4

for that price, i'd rather get an ipod touch, at least thats more portable and does the same thing.

    • ipads are pretty cool. ipod touches are almost as much as an iphone, i know which id prefer.

      • +1

iPod touches start at under $300. iPhones start at, $7-800.. what are you on about?

  • +1

Applecare for the iPad is $99, so I would rather pay $39 over the new iPad 1 (with 1 year warranty) for a refurbished one with Applecare/3 year warranty.
All main apple products offer applecare for refurbished products. And after 2 years you might sell it for a new one, so the risk in you paying for repair costs is zero for two years (unless you drop it or fail to follow the T&C).

    iPad 1 New (1 year warranty) = $449
iPad 1 Refurbished with Applecare (2 year warranty) = $488

Correct me if I'm wrong :)

You could probably buy applecare somewhere else cheaper.

    • Paying 25% of the item's purchase price for a mere two years of extra warranty sounds silly to me; I'd much rather pay for a replacement (Apple's updated model will no doubt be tempting) or the repair in the very unlikely event something goes wrong after the first year. (I've literally saved thousands over the past decade by not buying extended warranty on all my electronics, so I don't buy extended warranties as a general rule.)

      • -2

But remember that, given the tales around, if your refurbed iPad is to cark it in 12-18 months time, then the odds would be you would get a replacement of the (then) current model as repair parts etc would be scarce. I know that has happened regularly for macbooks/pros etc. We can only hope they keep up the trend. think of it as a 2 year payment plan for an iPad3- all you need is an oven to bake it ready ;)
