top 100 most useful app on PC

  • Top piece of software, have been using an earlier version for ages

  • Any better than using CrystalDiskInfo?

    • +3

this can run in the background as a Windows service and continually monitor HDD stats, and also be configured to send email alerts. It's quite a bit more powerful.

      • +1

Thanks scrimshaw. Might be worth a look.

        • +2

Also, unlike CrystalDiskInfo and other alternatives, it gives a very clear description of the condition of the drive.

    • This has a little more bling - for example opens on temp graph, where in CrystalDisk that is an extra click…. but they are both taking data from SMART. CrystalDisk can be run in "tray mode" and I find on one of my desktops, HDSentinel won't auto start with Windows but CrystalDisk does.

      • +1

You've got them mixed up. HDSentinel runs at startup in the system tray.

        • Nope - on both my desktops CrystalDisk starts and runs in the tray. On one of the machines HDSentinel starts and runs in the tray but for some reason on the other machine I can't get it to run from the start-up menu and have to manually launch every time.

It appears that you can get the Pro version for free…. directly off them.

Step 1: At first download the key - http://www.hdsentinel.com/license/4.20/hdsentinel.key

Step 2: now download the main software - http://www.hdsentinel.com/hdsentinel_pro_setup420.zip

Step 3: install the software and go to help section and click on “Enter registration key”.

Step 4: now click on “Load activated key file” and load the file of step 1.

Step 5: Your product will be activated.

      https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#trim

"Update (7 July 2018): with the 2018 April update of Windows 10, the TRIM status detection changed, so software (including the previous versions of Hard Disk Sentinel) may not able to properly detect and display the TRIM status. It is highly recommended to update to latest Hard Disk Sentinel version 5.30, by that the TRIM status is detected and displayed correctly again."

      • What's the difference between pro and standrard?

With all the discounts for SSDs popping up, I thought this was post for free hard disks.

  • Damn one of my portable hd’s Sitting at 52% health. It’s been playing up, is there a way to repair it ?

    • +5

The best option would be to buy a new drive, and try and copy the data from failing drive to it. Once a drive starts failing, it's time to replace it. In time, it will fail completely.

    • SSD or traditional hard drive? Some SSDs do provide Wear leveling count which is taken into heavy consideration for quality rating.

Since it is playing up, backup and replace it. Lots of HDD and SSD bargains lately.

      • Traditional HD. It’s my second or third 2TB WD elements portable hard drive that’s failed in the past two years. Think I’ll stay away from these in the future..

        • +5

If it is due to bad sectors, assuming it is still under warranty, then run the WD software to see if you can get a warranty replacement. If you bought it from OfficeWorks, bring the HD Sentinel report and see if they can offer you a replacement.

WD warranty often give you refurbished drives. Those are not very good.

        • Best to buy your own drives and enclosures. The put the shitty/refurbished drives in these ready made portable drives

    • if it makes u feel any better, i had 2 drives stay on 13% for a few months before they died. 52% my infer it has anywhere up to 1 yr left.

    • +4

I think others have rightly advised you to replace it because once it gets below 50% it's gonna start causing major errors.

In case you have issues recovering files from the drive using the free software 'Recuva' can help get it all back. I also had a 2.5" HDD that had an uncorrectable error count in the thousands (!!!) and the specific folders causing the issue were inaccessible through windows explorer. I used Recuva and managed to get all the files back.

      10/10 software in my opinion.

Thanks OP this should help ASIO and various international intelligence agencies monitor my activities

    • +3

Great stuff and do let us know by what means while at it. Just interested to know if any worse than using Google, Facebook, Twitter and so on :-)

    • +3

I am sure if any intelligence agency wanted to monitor your activities, they wouldn't require you to install this software for them to do so.

  • …cheers! ;)

  • Website not secure :(

  • Thanks OP. This was definitely something I needed.

  • Great software, I'm a long time user. However, it doesn't check for NAS drive mapped on a PC. Any suggestions for similar utility to monitor NAS Hard Disks' health?

    • +2

Nothing unusual with that. It can't monitor a MAPPED drive as thats just a shortcut, it can only monitor"Physical Disks". Your NAS needs its own disk monitoring utility and availability of apps will depend on your NAS model.

I have been using this for a few years now. I have replaced 2 drives which it told me the health had deteriorated but recently had one die without warning. But nothing is perfect but this software seems to do a pretty good job

  • still worked for me, not expired yet

    • Thanks,just updated.

      • thanks OP, nice find. I've used 4.7 very happily for several years.

  • Excellent OP, I (or last offer) introduced a stuffup and pitched me back to "unregistered". This one looks to have installed perfectly from that direct link that has been added.
