How many suckers are they going to get that won't bother returning it because it's $5 and 2G is switched off in Australia?

  • +4

    Cheap for an FM radio?

  • +2

    OP's username is Vodafail lol

    • Ironic in that Vodafone was actually the last to switch off 2G so they had it going for the longest.

    • +1

I can confirm I am not associated with Vodafone

      • +1

        anymore?

          Disgruntled ex-employee.

          • @edfoo: careful..there might be needle in the phone..

  • +2

Great as a gift for relatives and friends from overseas that still use 2g.

    • +36

      If you hate them.

  • Buy it for charity to be used in some poor country where 2G is still used.

    • But send it there fully charged cos once its drained…

  • +3

Up yours google, take that and spy on someone else 🖕

  • +12

Surely they should have some warning/advice this doesn't work in Australia? I expect a fair few people wouldn't know what 2G is, let alone that we've ditched those technologies.

Lol, this would be the perfect mobile phone for Richard Stallman

$20 in early 2014, and few votes then.

Lol, this would be the perfect mobile phone for Richard Stallman

You must really hate him. Stallman might prefer one of these:

      $20 in 2014…
      $9.95 in 2015
      $8 3 weeks ago
      $5 now… I'll wait😀

    • You must really hate him.

      No I don't.

That link is interesting but are those phones free of surveillance and tracking Stallman is so concerned about? Hence my joke …

for some it’s. a cheap way to get an AU charger and a cable …..

    • +2

I got one cheaper at a garage sale.

    • +5

What would you want it for??
Charger has cable attached, with unknown diameter barrel plug (goes into round hole in phone) 5V @500mA.

Unless you have a need for that, would be a waste of money. Even if it came with a USB charger & cable… @500mA it's probably not worth $5 to an Ozbargainer!

Might as well rummage through phone recycling centres for such an outdated charger - free.

      Photos of phone & charger

(There are occasional deals with included chargers & cables… eg free 3G Vodafone mobiles @Woolies ages ago - with USB charger & cable. I've bought 50c fans from Woolies for the USB to barrel plug cable - more adaptable for my use, but no USB charger.)

Could you hack them into walkie talkies? Kids would love it.

    • +1

Maybe, but might cost you $100 to mod it :p

Not of use with this phone lacking WiFi…

There was an Australian design for networking mobiles in local area… So mobiles could communicate between each other in an emergency using an App.
Was on an ABC science program a few years ago. My understanding was it used WiFi, so could be useful over short distances, or extended by using other mobiles as repeaters in the network.

Consider Apps to do the job (but not on this dumb phone) - needs network, uses little data https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-walkie-talkie-app/

These phones are designed to communicate with a 2G tower, over short distances using little power. Even then, no communication occurs unless connected to a phone network. Maybe see if there's a 2G tower setup going cheap😉

But Chinese suppliers regularly offer cheap purpose made walkie talkies with multiple channel. Kids units are around $20 a pair @Kmart, etc.
Hardly worth considering adapting these phones.

Good buy for those in Christmas Island where Telstra still run a 2G Network and don't sound like they are planning to upgrade.

    • Given that a undersea cable has landed on Christmas Island and Telstra is part of the group involved. I would imagine that Christmas Island will receive 4G in the next year or so.

  • If free 30$ SIM card then I'll take one

  • +3

I will buy a few and take to the Philippines and give them away. My 2nd SIM is 2g and works there and so should these.

    • 2G phone is the 21st century version of glass beads?

  • +3

Alarm clock, cheap samsung lasts 2-3 weeks with sim removed, very reliable, especially when power is out or battery in phone goes flat.

  • +2

    Cheaper than toy phone.

  • Better to spend $30 for a low end phone, and 😁.

  • +1

Feels like a bit unfair/misleading to sell these cheap to uninformed consumers…

    • misleading

It's not misleading. The price tag clearly state 2g.

    • -2

It's not worth going back to the shop and make a complaint to get 5$ back

      • +2

Please hand in your Ozbargain membership or never speak those words again.

    • +1

Not warning that this "mobile phone" can't be used as a phone on Australian networks is misleading.

Many consumers may not be as informed as the average Ozbargainer. This style of phone is still popular with older users, who are less likely to be aware of network changes.

Stating 2G on the shelf promotion does not save some customers from being mislead, nor Woolies from the act of misleading…

      Luckily Ozbargainers are better informed😉

      • +3

This would be covered by the ACCC under Goods must be fit for their intended purpose. As the stated purpose by Woolworths is as a mobile phone (shown on shelf promotion & packaging), but can't be used for the stated purpose in Australia, it is not fit for purpose. Naughty Woolies!

  • +2

My kiddo loves the old button phones, if someome there is willing to buy one and chuck it in a cheap dollar package or something I'll throw a tenner at y'all.

  • +2

Gotta neg this because 2g is switched off in aus therefore anyone who buys this is being duped. They shouldn’t be allowed to sell a superseded product IMO.

  • +1

Irresponsible of Woolworths to NOT indicate on their signage that this phone will not work in Australia.
