iPhone 6S Plus 32GB Space Grey $617 @ Officeworks

1140

By far the cheapest anywhere for brand new, AU or overseas. Stock seems decent but this model is out of production so may not last long.

Here are the reasons I bought it and you may want to consider it. AMA.
If these don't line up with your requirements, this deal isn't for you :-)

  • Has to be an iPhone, not interested in Android
  • You can live with 6S performance (improved under iOS 12, wife has one, it's smooth)
  • Your don't want to spend $900+ for the 7 Plus
  • You want a Plus model. Plus models don't just have a bigger screen, you get way better battery life, and the screen is denser and higher resolution, sharper than the non-Plus models.
  • Want peace of mind of 24 month AU warranty and avoid all the dodgy refurb deals sprouting up everywhere WTF
  • Travelling in next 60 days and can get GST refund
  • Can't think of a single thing you'll really miss compared to an iPhone 7/8
  • Headphone jack FTW
  • Think 4-figures for a phone is too much
  • Need a new phone soon

EDIT: Off to pick up mine from Officeworks, was a bit worried it's a stock error, but this confirms Officeworks does have them.

      • Its not just apparent.. iOS12 is hands down faster… I was on the beta for ages because 11 was so crap.

        • iOS 11 is really bad so it is easy to beat that.

Compared to the launched iOS my old devices came with, iOS 12 still have room for improvement. After the suffering Apple put people through iOS 11, iOS 12 is a good change.

iOS 12 is faster than iOS 11, but it is not the fastest for older devices. Some buyers know that and there are still people prefer even older iOS. There are still iOS 12 bugs on older devices which really wonder whether Apple did their QA properly. Old devices had no issues with the basic animation in their glory days, it is hard to understand those iOS 12 glitches. It feels like Apple still remind you in some areas that it's time to upgrade.

    • You're right about the price, I got my wife's 6S a year ago for like $450.

It is what it is though, there's no large screen new AU stock iPhone option anywhere near this price right now or recently.

  • prepaid iphone 6 at JB - for another consideration
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/all-phones/apple/apple-ipho…

unlock costs or stick with Telstra for a while.
    https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/mobiles-tablets/…

    • Vast performance difference between the 6 and 6S, having half the RAM really hobbles the former and you can feel it all the time. Consider the SE instead.

      • Exactly would be my concern in 12 months from now when this phone gets updated to iOS 13. IOS 13 could bring the performance down to like the iPhone 6 is today.

      • My other half has an Iphone 6 and he has no issue with performance. It depends on what you use it for, but even with pretty graphic intensive games there is no performance wobble. Personally I wouldn't buy either technology new, today; but I would also shun Android technology that old as well. My view is buy the latest and hold onto it for, roughly, 4 years - give it the best chance to be supported.

    • We also sell it unlocked for not that much more, certainly less than an unlock from Telstra.

Not sure about iphones, but android phones direct from carriers at least in the past had annoying preinstalled apps that you can't remove as well.

How do you live with storage so small?

    • Cloud sync + 50GB/month data (15GB or more is enough actually)

  • I'd consider this a deal at around $400.

If you want to get into iOS, a refurb SE is better as they are much cheaper.

  • Cheaper than refurb deals? I bought a 64GB one of these for my son from futu online on ebay for around $360 a couple of months back in a 20% off deal. Described "as new" and matches the description. One year warranty.

    • Fair I'll edit out that part.

  • iPhone 6s plus was the worst phone I ever owned. It constantly overheated when watching YouTube, had an issue where it would get 'stuck' on the hangup screen (phone would disconnect, but the 'call app' wouldn't/COULDN'T be closed, and wouldn't accept calls until I reset the phone). Finally, after updating to… iOS 9 I think… It started randomly shutting down.

Also, while the camera was ok for the time, I would say it's worse than my current Xiaomi phone is lowish light condition.

The Sony active something something phone I replaced it with was worse though…

Anyway, my 2 cents for your $600 3 year old phone

    • Happened out of warranty?

Well over half the phones I've ever owned have had issues within 2 yrs, so I go more based on how easy it is to get it fixed.

  • +1

Idk if your trolling… Plus phones have worse battery life literally the screen drains the batter the most and you have a larger screen… You say you really want a new phone and are gonna buy a 3 years old phone. 32 gigs… The new iOS is like 8 gigs. Why don't you but your wife a new phone and take hers.

    • "Plus phones have worse battery life literally the screen drains the batter the most and you have a larger screen"

Breathtaking confidence for someone with no idea what they are talking about.

Plus models come with bigger batteries, even with a thirstier screen they last longer, also the battery degrades slower as you accumulate fewer charge cycles.

      https://www.anandtech.com/show/9686/the-apple-iphone-6s-and-…

    • Remarkable to be so incorrect about the battery life.

  • +1

Well I suppose you phone freaks are one step up on fashion victims- there is a measurable increase in performance in newer models. Not a difference that makes much difference in the real world but it impresses the heck out of engineers.

  • +4

FWIW The iPhone 7 has been troubled by a number of hardware issues (eg https://www.macrumors.com/2018/05/04/apple-aware-of-iphone-7…) that can only be fixed by board level repairs. Basically the chip on the motherboard that manages sound (eg microphone) develops a bad solder joint. This initially leads to issues with the microphone and can eventually end up with the 'phone going into a boot loop. Some people have been able to (temporarily) 'fix' it by squeezing the 'phone or by opening it and putting something on top of the chip that simply pushes it down. The real fix is to de-solder and re-solder the chip back onto the board. Apple are now apparently refusing to replace/repair iPhone 7 models that are out of warranty, claiming it's normal wear & tear and potentially caused by the phone being dropped - so basically if it dies after 2 years that's it, so no giving your old phone to the kids.

The 6s only has had issues with the battery, and at least until the end of the year they can be replaced relatively cheaply at Apple (https://www.apple.com/au/iphone-battery-and-performance/), but is dead simple to replace the battery yourself if required. Basically, if you want an iPhone you should consider an SE, a 6S/6S+, or 8/8+. I'd avoid the 6 (bending and multiple other reliability issues), the 7 (reliability), and the XS (unless you can afford it and also put it in a decent case) as the back is glass, breaks, and is horrible to replace. Personally I prefer my android (impressed with my new S9) but my wife & daughters are all iPhone junkies so I recently picked up a broken second hand 6S off eBay - just going to replace the screen and it will be the backup for when one of them breaks/loses their phone.

From a performance perspective, the 6s/SE is perfectly fine. Frankly, the 5S is fine if all you're using it for is standard photos/facebook/email/etc. Apparently if you're willing to put the latest version of IOS on them, the performance is even better.

So - $647 for a new 32GB 6s plus from a bricks & mortar store is not bad, so a vote from me, but if you're not comfortable with doing repairs yourself I'd still search out the likes of eBay for 'old new stock' or professionally refurbished 'phones both of which should have warranties. A quick search then found a 128GB 6S Plus (Apple certified refurbished) for $499 (before using any discount codes)….. I expect there will be quite a few more hitting the market as contracts expire and people make the move to the XS.

    • I generally buy phones assuming any time I get out of them beyond two years is a bonus.

2 yr warranty for this 6S starts the day you buy not launch, so you don't have to worry until Oct. 2020 and do not try to repair yourself!

I haven't seen Apple certified refurbs in Australia, got a link? Do they also come with a 24 mth warranty?

I think refurb Macbooks are just 1 yr but I may be wrong.

I've done fairly intricate repairs and played with circuits soldering etc., but I doubt I'll ever try repairing, a big reason is time, if my phone is broken I need a replacement asap. And I've had bad experiences with third party repairers so after two years if my iPhone dies I'll probably just buy a new one.

    this doesnt seem that cheap?

    same thing from bing lee

    https://www.binglee.com.au/iphone-6s-plus-32gb-space-grey?gc…

    • Cheers didn't see that they need to fix their SEO, didn't show up on Google. Added.

  • Office works SOuthport has a few and also the non S ones.

I would like to know how anyone manages with 32GB. my phone has no photos or videos and is on 28GB.

    • If you are into latest mobile gaming on iOS, then this phone is obviously not for you.

Most people in the market for iPhone 6S Plus would be care a lot about price, they are already making compromises choosing this. Furthermore, it is unwise to buy a brand new, 3 generation old iPhone and pay extra premium for storage.

    • You probably play games or some other type of apps that get massive that I don't, and yes if you're at 28GB with just apps, 32gb will be painful, although Apple's app offloading feature is nice as long as you have ample data and 4G.

Apple fan boys are so funny. It's kind of a cute delusion.

    • …. neg city here you come! … lol

      btw i didnt neg ..hahaha

      • I know it!

  • I'm curious, why the need to 100 % stick with iPhone? Is it because of the fear of change? I'm not trolling or anything, just curious.
I'm thinking of buying my Mrs the new p20 from mobicity for around 750. This thing is 100 bucks more than this phone yet is this year's model, has 128gp storage and has one of the best cameras of any phone in the market.

    • ¯_(ツ)_/¯ … i'm the phone expert within my family/friends… so i get ppl "referred" to me to get my advice and first thing i ask is are you an apple user? and how long? if they say always i tell them ok just get an iPhone whichever u can afford lol… if not then we'll go through the options with iphone being an option only if they have a lot of stuff tied in with apple.

    • For any iPhone users who haven't used Android before, go into JB or Telstra and try out some of the demo phones. I've known some iPhone users who couldn't learn Android property and were miserable.

      • How the heck do you expect to come to grips with a completely new OS by playing with a display phone in a shop? This isn’t a knock on Apple users, I use Apple and Android devices, but if someone

couldn't learn Android property and were miserable

then that person really didn’t try, or they are in idiot. Android isn’t rocket science.

        • you would be surprised :) i've experienced the wrath of apple users when i got them to try android … so as i said i ask the questions to see if they are even mildly open to moving across.. lol

on the flip side my wife wont touch apple stuff… LOL .. go figure ¯(ツ)

    • I go into it a bit more in comments like this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/406918#comment-6431639

Basically you get older you have different priorities, my first smartphone was a Blackberry with the physical keyboard and trackball and some browser app, Opera I think, then Galaxy S, S2, S3, installing Indian ROMs as they got updates first, playing with Cyanogen on misc. useless Android tablets, then Nexuses, until switching to the iPhone 6 Plus.

Basically things that used to matter a lot more to me in phones don't any more, and things that people are really worked up about like stereo speakers I really can't think of a reason to care about!

iPhones are better for all my requirements and priorities and it's mostly not due to Apple lock in.

Switching just to explore things is too time consuming and disruptive to risk on my primary phone, if I get back into back end work for an app company I'd probably buy an Android phone as a spare to play with. Right now the toy I play with is an HP Microserver :-)

    • +2

It's a bit complicated. For my family members whom I put them on iPhones years ago, it is difficult to take them off iPhones. One reason is the price/cost - yes, it is really over the top, but it shows you care someone enough to get them iPhones.

Another problem is past experience with older Android devices years back. There were reliability and performance issues for them, the possibility to mis-press back or menu buttons. Furthermore, I had some bad experience with some Android devices (LG G4 bootloop, Nexus 9 being unbelievably slow on Android 7, cheap Chinese Android phones being a pain to setup Google services) and lack of exposure to latest gen flagship phones. They are not tech savvy, so when things gone weird, they struggle to resolve the issues.

Personally, I still use an Android phone 2-3 gens back. But, I recently bought an iPhone XS Max to give it to a family member. When it comes to family members, they are worth more than an iPhone XS Max. You won't get rich saving money on phones. I just wish Apple would stop this cost cutting rubbish (power/siri button + volume down to turn off the iPhone X - REALLY APPLE? To see the battery percentage - swipe down - !@#!@#!@). Go back to proper innovation and true user friendliness rather than hiding cost cutting (less ports / buttons, less accessories) with being courageous rubbish.

    • I always had iPhones, then switched to Android and switched back.

I liked Android in some ways it's way more advanced than IOS (e.g turning off wifi and bluetooth from the main screen) but I found after a while my phone would slow down and I'd have random crashes.

I have a MacBook Pro and invested into iCloud so an iPhone makes everything work 100x better. All my friends and family also have iPhones and iMessage makes things convenient.

iPhones used to be decent value when they were $1k for the top spec as you could sell it after 12 months for $600 - $700, but the new pricing is ridiculous.

I've had my iPhone 7 for 2 years and it's still going strong. I plan to spend $35 to upgrade the battery before Apples discounted pricing runs out and I hopefully will get another 2 - 3 years out of it.

$647 for an iPhone 6s is stupidly overpriced, I'd personally buy of eBay from a reputable seller.

  • +1

Newest iPhone you can get with a headphone jack.

    • And the last moment of silence thank you, you may now curse the dongle.

  • You’d have to be stupid to pay this much when you can get one second hand so much cheaper.

I picked up a 6S 64GB off gumtree for $250 a few weeks ago and it’s basically in brand new condition. Look around the used market folks.

If remaining battery charge is an issue you can get Apple to chuck a new battery in for $39.

    • You'd have to be stupid to pay $250 for a phone, or like any money for a phone.

I got my last phone for free, hand me down from a relative, basically in brand new condition. Scrounge off your friends and family folks.

  • +3

    cheers OP. nice price.

I'm a match for 10 of your 11 reasons but 32GB isn't enough for me and I want a better camera so I'll probably end up with a 128gb XR. It's a bit nuts to spend double mostly for better pics/vids but with 3 young kids there's a lot of memories to capture and inevitably many are with the phone camera.

    • I thought I already commented here, in any case, wanted to say that's like the best possible reason for wanting the XR.

  • Can the person who opens this pandora box again close the lid?

  • -1

Hello everybody, well these many up votes? what am I missing here by having a cheaper newer S8 Plus with curved and bigger screen, better body ratio, more features/looks different than the older Samsung phones and its falls about everyday and still look & works great? is it a trend/following thing, is Apple paying the rent, do I need to convert, just can't get me head around it, can someone please enlighten me?

    • +1

It gets a few bonus marks for being the last mainstream iPhone with true physical home button, headphone jack, larger screen, 4K video, OIS. Basically, it ticks the checkboxes despite being quite old. Being one with "S" means it generally suffers less gate issues (bendgate resolved, motherboard/screen issue addressed).

Whether you/we like it or not, in Australia, iOS has a bigger market share than Android. Just because you can get S8 Plus at that price, it doesn't make that a bargain either. It's not hard to beat an iPhone deal in price. The S8 Plus CPU doesn't feel one gen ahead in real life compared to this unfortunately.

      • +1

        Thanks netsurfer, totally appreciate that.

I did not mean to offend anyone, I am trying not to judge anything in anything that I don't understand but I question everything and I do not literally have any preference.
I don't mind negative votes either because negative exist because of positive, haha

and I just want to say thanks to everyone for being so helpful with others here or anywhere!

      • Ah but the RAM, you can totally feel the RAM right, as you use it, the warmth of 4 or 6 gigs of RAM ramming around vs a measly 2GB in the iPhone, pulsing through your veins.

    • My phone is 36-24-36, the perfect body ration, and just got updated to last year's Android release, and it all went smoothly except Instagram stopped working.

What am I missing here, why are people paying the same money for slightly older but still fast hardware, better build quality, and the latest iOS build?

Can someone enlighten me? Why would they want Facetime and iMessage, end-to-end encrypted by default because Apple doesn't mine your messages?

  • +4

6s? 32gb? Better not waste money.

  • +3

Since when did the Android fanboys become the intolerant scum the iPhone fanboys where? How times change. The bottom line is… the right phone is the one that’s right for you. Apart from Apple being an absolute ripoff, they are pretty good phones as are android based phones. If you think otherwise, you are simply an absolute moron.

P.S I’ve had android since day dot on the LG Cookie(look it up amateurs).

    • Years ago I was building Android mesh networks, and had to modify the Android source code and create a custom build of Android then flash it onto devices to get WiFi in ad-hoc more. Now I have kids asking me if I stick to iPhones because I find the Android UI confusing :-D

Truth is being a fanboy isn't much use to anyone else, even techn00bs, and most of them are poorly informed and sprinkle in completely inaccurate stuff with 100% confidence.

  • +2

Where's the deal? This has been way under $600 bucks before?

    Also $649 at HN
    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/apple-iphone-6s-plus-32gb-sp…

  • MUAHAHAHAA $647 for a phone that's more than 3 years old, yet it's considered a bargain by fanbois.
This must be the funniest joke I've heard this week.

In case you're wondering, I'm not an Android fanboy.
I have an iPad 2018, iPad PRO 12.9 and iphone 6 in my possession.

    • -1

You have a problem with three year old phones yet when your phone was three years old instead of replacing it you went and got two iPads?

  • If you put a few of these iPhones away for thirty years or so and never used them, they might be worth a motza- like classic vintage cars. Don't know what you would do about the battery. Probably take the original battery out and put a replica one in at sale time.

  • Given that Kogan are already selling the 8 Plus for $1018, this deal is no deal. You can get a 6 plus on gumtree for $300 without much effort., and with a further $40 replace the battery through Apple.

    • You can also get an apple for a dollar lol this is no bargain it's 650 times more expensive.

Fanboys are funny, you'd think arguing this stuff 24x7 you'd at least get decent at debating.

    • +1

@beyondtool Um… the first part of your argument has the same exact issue. Just because you provide the cheapest deal available for an iPhone, it does not automatically make it a bargain. Value for money is never the strength of Apple devices.

That's the fundamental issue with most iPhone "bargain" posts. It depends on people's perception on the phones. So, if you shown another example iPhone deal as a reason this is not a bargain, you will have a tough time proving your point (unless that deal is truly a bargain "smartphone" deal).

  • +2

Good phone, but not a good price. This is coming from a 6s plus user

    • Historically no, in a month or two, maybe not, but slim pickings right now.

  • By the way for those who use Samsung S7/S8 phones, whenever there is an update the phone restarts 20 times before it can function again. Just when you think your phone is updated and trying to make a call, the phone will suddenly die and restart. Something Samsung users never tell you.

    • +1

On the bright side, there aren't that many updates :D

      • Are you using any new android phone recently or just a thought in your heads? Or repeat what other people said. Fyi, I'm using s8 and it has 6-7 updates since I bought it, and it is NOT restart 20 times like some ignorant said. Every phone has pro and cons, read reviews from up to date mobile review site like gsmarena, get educated and get real, this is not 2010 anymore sheeps

        • Only Samsung dear. No problem with other brands. I am using LG and Nokia now and will not go back. I might be an Android fan but not a Samsung fan. Chill out.

    • I'm sure if it's a big issue then plenty would report it. I've have had various Samsung devices and never encountered the issue you are reporting. Every device can suffer from bugs, not every user gets to experience the same ones on their device. In my experience Samsung have been pretty consistant with pushing out frequent updates, probably on par with my Apple devices. The only difference I've seen is they don't update to the latest major version of Android as fast like Apple and google.

  • "Think 4-figures for a phone is nuts"… yet paying almost three quarters of that amount for a 3 year old phone makes perfect sense.. :/

    • No what makes perfect sense is turning less than two thirds into almost three quarters either because you suck at math or suck at forming an argument or both.

  • I clicked this deal for the comments

    • Me too.

  • -1

This 32GB model was only released in 2016 when the 7 came out and started at $1,079 (in 2015, the 16GB version was $1,079). Last year when the 8 was released, it dropped to $849. Looking at the trend, dropping an extra $200 doesn't seem that special and although it works perfectly on iOS12, it's not unlikely that support will stop next year.

    • -1

No way in hell support will stop next year.

It's internally identical to the iPhone SE, which was sold as a 'current' phone and was only discontinued last month. The A9 also powers the 2017 iPad.

That's why people going on about "3 years" without getting at why they consider it a dealbreaker are just ridiculous.

It has a shape and bezels that were dated even 3 years ago (just like Pixel), build quality still only Apple can do, the screen isn't bleeding edge AMOLED but LCD isn't dead yet, the CPU measures up to Android phones from last year, GPU probably more dated, don't know or care, the camera I'd imagine at least measures up to 2 yr old Android flagships and current mid range. Runs the latest iOS build while even high end Android phones are stuck on Oreo, TouchID is still the best, can run every app comfortably.

      • +4

You already listed out all the reasons why $647 is way overpriced:

        • internally identical to the iPhone SE
        • 3 year old
        • a shape and bezels that were dated
        • screen isn't bleeding edge AMOLED
        • CPU measures up to Android phones from last year
        • GPU probably more dated
        • camera I'd imagine at least measures up to 2 yr old Android flagships and current mid range

Go get a used 2018 Android flagship for this amount of money instead.

        • -1

Your new Volkswagon Golf is way overpriced for the size, go get a second hand Commodore instead.

          • @scynaz: For the same amount of money, I definitely will get a used 2018 ZB Commodore instead of a new 2015 pre facelift Golf 7.

Do you even know that the current gen of ZB Commodore is an all-new model?

            • @andylch: Is it a rebadged Daewoo or a Wuling?

              • @scynaz: No. It is a rebadged Opel Insignia.

  • +1

Buy an iPhone if you want iOS, buy Samsung or whatever else if you want Android. Simple.
Android fanboys are a lot worse than Apple ones nowadays.
Yeah you can get an S8 cheaper etc etc, but at the end they completely offer different experiences. Just buy whatever you want.

    • Maybe I had just forgotten what fanboys are like, but it is pretty amazing, like visiting a museum.

    • The best part is all the posts saying go get a used phone and there are so many.

Basically because they all ranted you could get an Android and save hundreds, then actually checked prices, then said "go get a used phone so I can scrape a win in this argument".

    • +1

Apple fanboys (iSheep) are fewer, but it literally comes up all the time what model they've got and how great it is.
Android users mainly just state what phone they have and why it's good - perfectly acceptable given the enormous range out there.

Sure there are a few that parade around gloating they got the Note 9 or whatever but certainly not the majority.

      • Honestly haven't seen many Apple fanboys brag about what model they have and how good it is - maybe there is but definitely not from what I've seen.

I just feel ever since the iPhone stopped having a headphone jack that was always used as a 'Haha I have a headphone jack' for Android users and still is used today. It was particularly bad when Pixel owners laughed at iPhones when they removed the headphone jack… and then low and behold the Pixel 2 didn't come with one either.

  • I had to agree with the whole list, but I failed at going overseas in 60 days or less. Well, back to the drawing board.

    • NZ is nice in spring :-D I have planned trips before just because tax refund.

  • Well not to mention not many people are willing to pay $2kfpr a phone, that amount of money could be invested on to a nice laptop

    • Or people could have both :p

  • If anyone is interested (not sure whether this is against the rules):

I have an iPhone 6 Plus 128GB that's only 8 months old and in "like new condition" (its had a case and screen protector on since day #1), and I'm selling it locally for $400 on gumtree but I'd be happy to sell it to an OzBargain member for $360 + shipping

Will throw in some bonuses, including the official apple black leather case (RRP $80) and a bunch of other cases :).

    • Get the battery replaced if you don't sell by December!

      • yeah, I thought about that but the battery life is still at 99% so it's strong. Hardley used.

    • yep, I'm interested. u still have it?

    • Yep. Harvey Norman price match, plus the $50 Amex cash back made it $567.

  • Honestly my iPhone 6 plus is performing like a trooper so, although I lust after the new ones, I will probably give it a miss for now. (The watch series 4 is singing to me - I want my Dick Tracey watch). What I really want now is for them to release the new iPads so I can look at updating my iPad Mini 4; because that is the thing I use the most. I will probably get a Cellular version this time.

  • Buy iphone, to chase the IOS environment.
"Can't think of a single thing you'll really miss compared to an iPhone 7/8" Agree, so little difference of the looks!

  • Thanks OP. What a thread. Picked one up at $617 officeworks. Had a look at gumtree, ebay etc and decided you can't beat a new phone, even if it's well superseded. That's just my opinion. And I like a headphone jack.
Iphone, to windows, to android, to iphone.

  • Was jelly that my wife had an iPhone X. So I went and bought the iPhone 6S Plus at OW for $617! Love a retro phone that is heavier and bigger than my wife's. And a 1/3 the price!

Seriously happy with the purchase. No second hand iPhone 7 - with IP67 - that has been dropped in someone's toilet for me!
