The Seagate Expansion Hard Drive has a massive 2TB of storage space…

Much better than a tiny 2TB of storage space you'll often get with lesser brands.

  • I recall Seagate portable drives used to have some issues a couple of years back? Have Seagate redeemed their reputation in recent years?
What's the brand of the drive they use inside if anyone knows?

    Thanks.

    • I have four of these in my backup rotation at the moment, with the oldest couple probably three or four years old now, and they haven't missed a beat.

Not sure what's inside, but they're not terribly quick so likely an SMR drive.

    • Have Seagate redeemed their reputation in recent years?

No. There's a reason they're always on special. But this just mine (and others) opinions.

    • Yeah they had a bad reputation about 15 years ago, not so much anymore. I think they're pretty rock solid.

More recent than that. This website has been logging their data centre HDD failure rate for a long time, Seagate always have the highest failure rate.

Seagate always have the highest failure rate.

I wonder if you ever read the report, or just hearsay. Here is the summary of the latest report (Q2 2018)

@O O: Did you see the recent 35.88% failure rate for the 4TB Seagate ST4000DX000? That isn't 15 years ago.

Or the 2013 to 2017 review:

            https://www.backblaze.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/bl…

That again isn't 15 years ago.

            • @FabMan: Yes, I see this

in Q1 the 4 TB Seagate drive model: ST4000DX000, has a high failure rate of 35.88%

That figure is for that particular batch of Seagate 4TB HDD. Then you cherry picking and generalise it to

Seagate always have the highest failure rate.

              • @O O: No, they stopped buying that model so the lifetime of it looks reasonable. Had they been stupid enough to keep buying a model that had such a recent high failure rate, they overall stats would look worse.

Look at the report from 2017, Segate had the highest rate of failure, in 2018 they look better, as more recent models have improved, but that information is 1 year old not 15 years. You've greatly exaggerated how long its been since they've improved. Read each year and you'll see that while they have definitely been improving over the years, its not 15 years worth of high standards.

                  @FabMan:

they stopped buying that model so the lifetime of it looks reasonable

Yeh, you're right, they start buying Segate ST4000DM000 4TB instead to make the lifetime looks reasonable, foul play.

                  Move on, it's 2018 now.

                  • @O O: Don't be a child, grow up. They didn't buy a failing HDD to prevent wasting their time and money, not to improve stats.

                    • -1

                      @FabMan:

They didn't buy a failing HDD to prevent wasting their time and money

Yeh, you're right. So Seagate discontinues ST4000DX000 product line.

                      Move on, technology keep updating.

@O O: Let's get it clear, Seagate have been improving greatly over the past few years, but its not been anywhere close to 15 years. People still under the belief Seagate are shit is a reputation Segate deserve for releasing poor quality HDDs for a long time.

Again: they are better, only recently, they deserve their shit reputation.

@FabMan: Weird, I've had these Seagate portable drives for over 5-6 years, just the budget 1gb and they haven't missed a beat. 1 of them has been a drive used pretty much daily through TV boxes etc. Still going strong.

Seagates back in the 90s were bleeding edge drives that were cheap so price/performance was awesome, but got so hot they were prone to failure a lot, they didn't help themselves on the 00's that is for sure.

They use the seagate slim (7mm) HDDs. I have 4 seagate portable HDDs & a firecuda in my PS4 & haven't had a problem.

  • Also, the delivery cost is variable depending on location.

  • +1

Another option would be to price match with Officeworks to bring it down to $75.05 and (possibly) free delivery.

  • +2

Mine failed within 12 months. It's ultimately luck..any brand can fail but this is a good deal

  • Can the drive be removed from the case and put in a laptop?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • Nice! Much cheaper than buying an internal drive.

  • I used 1 4TB and 4 X 2TB , so far nothing happen , everything still go smoothly , use to contain movies , connected to my TV when I watch movie.

If you purchase 2, you can get the price down to $71.10 each ($142.20 total), using PACK20 code…

    • $149.62 inc delivery or free pick up

  • Any cheap 4TB portable hard drives going lately? Need one for external storage on the PS4. Seem to all be around $180-200…

Is anyone success with P5OFF to get the discount?

      • +1

        Thanks for testing it.

    • You haven't used it three times already have you?

    • Same here can't apply the code

      • I checked with both postage and c&c options and they work fine. Have you used the code three times already? or else you should try it again
