      • Welcome.. Happy this helped someone..

Seems pretty good price for a Carplay unit.

Personally I need a Single Din Carplay unit as there is no double din fascia for my car, but they're all very expensive…

yep, most of these "brand" name head units cost an arm and a leg for sub-par performance and technology.
Just do what i do and buy a cheap Nexus 7(2013) and mount it on your dash. Old but still beats most of these head units by a mile.

I just use Android auto on my phone. Bought a latest $500 phone for $100 from Gumtree and using it with cheap sim deals as a solo GPS unit. Very happy

        • yep, that would work too. Any of those solutions are probably way better than these brand name head units imo. I only got a nexus 7 coz big screen, my nexus 7 just tethers off my phone for data. I've even tried a lot of the brand name Android head units and i still find them slugish, terrible touch screens, crap resolution Android 4.4 and all this for almost $700.

How did you mount it without someone potentially smashing a window to steal it?

Android Auto works really well on this headunit and has quality of life improvements all the time. It's cool to see it adapting and staying modern.

I personally love the interface of the headunit, it is simple and IMO timeless.

There's a noticeable improvement in sound quality too with stock speakers and has preouts for you to use aftermarket amp/speakers to really push it next level.

I have this head unit. It’s pretty good. Only annoying thing is it takes a bit of time when you first start the car to “boot up”.

Also I wish I spent a few more dollars on my harness to get full steering wheel button functionality, but that has nothing to do with the head unit.

    • I usually let my car sit for a minute so I've never really noticed the boot time.

Agreed that it's pretty good too, if only it was a 720p/1080p display, volume wheel is a major bonus though.

There's a hack out there that removes that annoying screen you that makes you press "OK" or whatever before it'll work. Lemme see if I can find it. Only took me 30 seconds to install.

Edit: Go here to find the firmware files to flash. The warning screen was giving me the shits so this fixed that. No more having to touch the screen before I can listen to music.

      • That hack doesn't work with the firmware these units come with, the screen now disappears without you having to press OK.

Oh about time Sony got rid of that shit screen out of the factory. Still a good use for anyone with an older model.

    • There are newer models (xav-ax1000, xav-ax3000 & xav-ax5000) which Sony claim are twice as fast to start.

You can retain steering wheel control without buying an expensive adapter.

You just need a spare aux cable that you can hack up.

The headunit can learn your cars steering wheel input controls. Here's the diagram for various cars.

  • Really decent deal. Got this last time during Christmas and install it myself.

The DIY installation is fairly straight forward given you already purchased the right harness and bracket. This could cost another 80-100 depending on what car model requires.

The toughest part could be to have it connected to a steering wheel control (which my car doesn't have) and factory reverse camera (especially for Toyota's 6V factory cam) .

Do some research, find a mate or a good workshop that can help you fit this if you do not want to get your hands dirty.

    • Any Autobarn or other such store will do it for ~$120.

      • Sorry noob question. Do i need to purchase all the accessories (harness, brackets, etc) or does Autobarn sells those accessories? I am more than happy to pay $120 for install plus accessories if Autobarn does it all.

        • They will provide and do all the work for you. Might be an extra cost… My car was all torn up but they did a great job of fixing it up for $150 total installed.

  • Anyone know if its a capacitive screen?

    • Are there any other types, I thought resistive died with Nokia-the N800

      • Most are resistive. I was thinking of capacitive incase carplay supports multiple touch at some point, but I just looked into it further and the capacitive screens aren't multitouch anyway..

    • resistive, but this review seems to think it's not that bad:
      https://9to5mac.com/2017/02/20/review-sony-xav-ax100-receive…

"XAV-AX100 is also resistive touch which is the less preferred option compared to capacitive touch screens. Resistive touch screens are generally less responsive, feel flimsy under your finger, easily dirty and perform poorly in bright lighting. Sony used a very good version of resistive touch, however, as you could almost be convinced its capacitive … almost."

    • You wouldn't want capacitive in the car. The reflection and glare from the screen would make it almost unusable. Besides, the touch is spot on on this model. I can also use my finger nail to pick options which I couldn't with capacitive (placing a whole finger accurately while driving is hard, whereas tapping it with my fingernail is a lot easier).

    • It's resistive but works fairly well, I bought one on the last deal and loving the Android Auto.

  • FML i just bought this second hand on ebay for $405.

  • These are great got one in last sale

Only minor criticism is no parking guidance lines

Very worth it and works well great sound

  • Easy to install?
Or its just a magnetic on and off and supply off ciggy point?

    • You'll have to wire it, the easiest way is to grab one of these for the stereo then just search super cheap for the AERPRO connection to your model of car.

  • Anyone know where to find out whether this will fit a 2006 Prado?

    • +1

Hey, maybe a little late to reply but I fitted this into a Prado 120 2008…..took about 2 hours

You will need the below parts but after that it works great. I paid $50 to wire up the reverse cam as the Prado stock cam is a different voltage to the unit

      1 x Sony AV 16 Pin Plug to ISO Harness + Type C Patch Lead APP9SP4 (Aerpro APP9SP4) $18.85
1 x Aerpro Install Kit For Toyota models Corolla Hilux etc FP9016K (Aerpro FP9016K) $92.85
