Not exactly.. it's different and not in a good way - this is $65 for 45GB for 24 months.. not worth it!

The deal you've linked is $65 for 80GB with the $500 credit for 24 months - which is way better value and I don't see why that can't be used towards the iPhone XS as well..

      Unless that deal has expired?

      • $65 for 80 GB was better deal.

  • -1

Hmmm, interesting deal. If you sell off the phone, you could get 24month plan for free? or did i interpret it wrong?

    • +2

How I understand it is you sign up to the Telstra $65 per month plan which is just a sim only plan and then you can get $500 off the iPhone. So yeah you could re-sell the iPhone for RRP and make around $500 (bit less probably). But you'd still be paying $65 per month. However, would average out to a $45 a month plan if you sold the iPhone for $500 more than you bought it.

      • +9

In saying that, that's a lot of effort when you could just sign up to the Optus $40.40 50gb sim only plan, which only has a 12 month contract.

        • Thats correct, worked it out to be cheaper to buy it outright.

purchased one for my partner and ended up negotiating a free cover & screen cover…

          • @Puska: Aren’t cover and screen cover are like $5 on eBay? Me missus bought heaps of them recently for like $2-$3 each?

            • @michaelTito: Why waste my time trying to buy something on eBay when I can get a $50 case and a $40 screen cover with life time warranty for cracks or scratches for free.

              • @Puska: That case manufacture is most likely making a $45+ profit.

                • @Atazoth616: I didn’t pay for it, so I don’t care if they made a profit? Lmao

                  • -1

@Puska: The point was that you are receiving a case worth $5, not $50, for free. Lmao.

                    • @Atazoth616: Please show me your facts that the case is worth $5? Your point is completely invalid cause you don’t even know what brand it is.

                      • -4

                        @Puska: Two questions:

How is claiming that a manufacture is "most likely" making a profit of $45+ unsound*?

Why are you assuming that brand changes the production cost?

                        Note*:
Be careful in claiming a comment is invalid.

As, invalid means that the conclusion is not inferred by the premises

While, Unsound means the conclusion is untrue.

                        • @Atazoth616: You’re literally trying to start a fight with someone because they got a free case and screen saver and you’re claiming they made a profit on me lmao
I got it for FREE how is someone making a profit on me when it is FREE?
Far out some people have nothing else to do…

                          • -1

@Puska: Sorry, but I never claimed that the manufacture was making a profit on your case.

Rather, that the manufacture is marking up the case to make a $5 case appear more expensive.

                            Or put another way.

Is is not true that even if you are getting the case for free, as you so claim, that they could be making a $45 dollar profit from someone else?

                            • -1

@Atazoth616: Also, why are replying to me if you have something better to do?

  • +1

For traveller, you want to pay outright not high phone plan.

    • +1

I was referring to people travelling overseas (holiday/work) soon. I've updated the post for clarity.

  • +5

Gotta say, I took up the last deal for the $200 gift card, and man am I not happy with Telstra's reception compared to Vodafone. Kinda wish I never switched.

    • +1

Same. Last time I was with Telstra (2013-2014) I had no issues. But I recently ported from Optus on the same deal and it has been pretty disappointing.

      • Make that the 3 of us. Optus to Telstra and its pretty average, sometimes even dropping out

        • I think a big draw of Telstra is rural coverage. But if you spend all your time in the city Optus is pretty tough to beat.

          • +3

@Vaiels: I would argue that if you spend all your time in the city, Vodafone is pretty hard to beat. Optus are renound for over subscribing their network.

Vodafone are soon going to have a lot more radio spectrum when they merge with TPG.

    • Same here.

Would be great with the iPhone XR - the new best value phone.

    • +1

      Surely trolling haha

      • +7

You'd hope he's trolling with a username like that too..

        • Lol.. depends on the type of Predator he is?

      • *new best value TOP TIER phone.
Pixel 3 xl = $1349, iPhone XR = $1,229. Why would you get the XS etc over this?
5 years of updates and support with local warranty and cheap battery replacement. It's going to be my new long termer.

        • -1

The iPhone XR is in no way a top tier phone haha, only has an LCD panel which isn't even 1080p and only has 326 ppi. On par with the iPhone 4 to put it in perspective. Neither is the camera as good as the Pixel 3XL or other top tier phones. It has a decent chipset, but nothing a mid-range phone doesn't have. It's basically a low-mid range phone with an Apple logo pushing it to $1,299.

          • @BeerCrisp: Compare it to the 2XL, and the screen looks 100x better - it looks as good as most new phones anyway.
Perhaps only if you put your screens under a microscope you would notice.
It still beats P3XL in nearly all benchmarks.
Who cares if the camera is 95% of what the P3XL is…really…. at least you don't have to put up with all the major issues the Pixel 3 XL is having…

I mean you pay a premium on iPhone because it is a premium phone. I would never pay more than $1500, but I can still admit facts. For $1229, you get 90% of the IPXS for almost $450 less and a bigger screen.

            I would compare op6 vs p3xl

            • @onlinepred: I'm not an activist for either phones, I think they are both way overpriced. I just don't think the XR is a 'value phone' or affordable. The Xiaomi Poco F1 is affordable, or the OnePlus devices, etc. all of which offer the same if not better specs than the iPhone XR.

              • -3

@BeerCrisp: Specs yes, but an overall package no. For example the speakers, camera, software ability, build quality, support, service, update schedule are all better on iPhone. If you don't value that, then for sure there are much cheaper phones out there. Having had the OP6 I highly recommend it for those people. They aren't top tier phones though. They aren't premium. Specs aren't everything. The software experience you get on the XR is leagues ahead of the OP6 or F1.

Either way, I'm happy that a major corp released an actual value flagship phone. Google used to do it with nexus, XR is no nexus pricing, but it makes these premium phones available to more people for a good price, and directly competes against galaxies/pixels etc.

                • @onlinepred: Okay, I think we can agree to disagree, the build quality of the OP6 is still top notch, they just take a different design, doesn't mean it is lesser than. The software experience is completely objective, it's a personal preference over Android and iOS. Sure if you value all of that at $800 more that's fine! I just refuse to call it a value phone haha

                • -1

@onlinepred: Everyone's leaving out the fact that any Google Android device is a data collection tool for the world's largest internet advertising business.

Say what you like about Apple but they are not in the ad slinging biz and therefore don't have an incentive to collect data unlike Google who are voracious since their business relies on it.

            • +1

              @onlinepred:

Who cares if the camera is 95% of what the P3XL

This is a good point. We get carried away pixel peeping when 99% of pics are only viewed on a small screen.

As for the screen res on the XR. I really don't think its an issue unless you keep doing side by side comparisons.

Too big n heavy for me though. I want a phone, not a paper weight. Just my personal preference though

              • +1

@slipperypete: It’s only a little bigger that iPhone 8. Smaller than p3xl by a bit

                • @onlinepred: yeah I had a Huawei P20 Pro after being a long time iphone user. Just too big….XR is similar and even a little heavier. Some people like big phones. I'm not a heavy duty user and need something that fits easily into my pocket. Just personal preferences though. Seems a lot of people are getting the bigger versions phones these days….just not for me

Sold the Huawei as found it all a little clunky. Loved the battery and camera just didn't get along with Android and the bulkiness. Now looking out for another iphone

TBH, from my perspective, if it wasn't for the bulkiness there is little reason to get the XS. Screen is more than fine

  • Wait, can you TRS and bring it back?

    • Yeah, can you? I was under the impression that you can only bring back up to AUD900 of goods before they are taxed.

      • Correct, if you bring back over AU$900 of goods purchased overseas (or TRS claimed GST) you must declare it and pay the GST due

        • Supposed to, yes.

Although you can add the allowances of family members travelling in a group.

So, 2 adults and 1 child is $900+$900+$450= $2250 allowance.

      • +1

What about depreciation? If you are away for 6 months would the price have dropped below $900 mark if you originally bought it for around $1533?

      • How are they going to police this?

      • -1

        INCORRECT.

——- you just need more info on the sales invoice. See below (the last line).

What is a valid tax invoice?

A valid tax invoice must be in English and contain the following information:

the document is intended to be a tax invoice
        the seller's identity
the seller's Australian business number (ABN)
the date the invoice was issued
a brief description of the items sold, including the quantity (if applicable) and the price
the GST amount (if any) payable – this can be shown separately or, if the GST amount is one-eleventh of the total price, as a statement such as 'Total price includes GST'
the items on the invoice where GST in include and the items that are GST free.

In addition, tax invoices for sales of $1000 or more must include the buyer's identity, for example their name or passport number.

        • Ridiculous I was negged for this comment.

          1. Corrected the erroneous information in the posting (ie. there is no $900 limit… no limit at all)
          2. Quoted the actual regulation
          3. Gave the link
          4. Got negged
          5. What a joke

even $500 these phones are still rediculously expensive!

I hope I find my recently lost essential phone :(

    • $500 off

Either you read it wrong or are saying it would be expensive for $500!?

      • +1

Yes, typo , I’d edit but I am unable to now

    • $500 would be the cheapest top of the line iPhone ever?

  • +1

    To me
    $65*24=1560,
That's a lot for two years of phone plan contract . Yes it does include more data, but I am currently with kogan. And for a normal user kogan is prob the best value

This is for power users who need big data.

Who already worship Telstra then it's a good deal providing you get $500 off any phone

  • +4

Only a couple of years ago, OZB were filled with comments about "Why would I buy a phone that costs more than $1000?". Today it's doubled that amount to be as expensive as a Macbook Pro..

Getting ridiculous and going by this rate in 10 years, we'd have phones that costs as much as an entry level medium-sized car.

    • +5

      Here we go again…

  • What’s the quickest way to port my number from Telstra to poet it back to get this deal?

    • Port to Aldi.. still uses Telstra network, wait 30 days and then go to jb and sign up

I’m 2 weeks into Aldi and to be honest it’s just as good as when i was on Telstra

    • Pretty sure porting to a sub of the same carrier is actually the slowest thing you could do.

Port out to optus or someone on a $2 sim. Hope that Telstra doesn't 'detect' you when you come back, I saw some mention of that.. but if you've got the $500 off I guess it's already too late for them to do anything ;)

  • I am no longer supporting Apple crazy tax.
What is a good alternative? Leaning toward LG as they have a great DAC.

    • +1

      Pixel 2 or 3.

      • +1

        Nope, Pixel's suck.

Go the way of a decent AndroidOne device (eg Nokia 7 Plus), or get yourself a Samsung Galaxy S-Plus (Exynos version to unlock the bootloader).
LG G/V devices are really good as well, but you have to be very careful to buy them AFTER they are r00ted by the community.
The OnePlus devices are okay for now, but the OnePlus 6t and OnePlus 7 are pretty bad (higher and higher cost, lesser and lesser features).
However, the devices from Xiaomi, Razer, and RoG are getting more and more interesting.

        • +1

Why do that when you can get a pixel 2 for $500-$600 these days?

Pixels are great. Stock android, updates out immediately, best camera in their classes including against Apple phones. What is not to like?

          • @serpserpserp: I will grant you that they have great cameras, nay, the best cameras even compared to Apple, Samsung, and Huawei.

And that the software phenomenal, with great long-term support and developer community.

However, they're sticking to bad designs. Killing the headphone jack for no reason is anti-consumer. They're fumbling up the loudspeakers. They have small batteries and average performance. The screens are really average. The durability and build quality are really poor. And on top of all this they're asking for a very premium price.

So unless you're getting a $1,200 Pixel device for $600 (which is non-existent)…I would stay far away. There are people that benefit from the device, but they're the niche and not the rule (eg Application Developers).

            • @Kangal: Performance is pretty good. Headphone jack was killed in line with the iphones and other devices, loudspeaker is ok, but so is the iPhone, screens could be better, but they aren't average, build quality is good, probably not on par with Samsung but again, not worse than the average android phone.

I agree the price should be better, but if I can buy them 12 months after they come out, some of the deals I've seen on this site have them at almost 40-50% of retail when they were released. At that price they are a good buy.

              • @serpserpserp: That's a cop out.
Change for the sake of change is a stupid concept, I'm all for improvements but removing the headphone jack is still anti-consumer.

And I can't see any of those "super cheap" deals even on OzBargain. I mean buying a Pixel 2XL (128GB) in May 2018 (or earlier) shipped for $800 (or less)…yes, that's a decent value.

But the truth is you're more likely to buy it, for over $900, after July, and the 64GB version. That's not good value…it's battling against the S9, S9+, LG, OnePlus, Xiaomi handsets. Even Huawei is beginning to offer more value than Google.

                • @Kangal: This was the cheap bargain:

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/410724

                  Forget the XL's

From the reviews the Xiaomi and Huawei although presenting good value, have their own issues.

                  • @serpserpserp: Why, I need/want the larger size. That's the flagship benchmark anyway; see Apple, Samsung, Huawei.

$690 for the Pixel 2 (128GB, no microSD) is fine. It's not great value, but it isn't a complete ripoff.
Until you realise this is after the new models release, and 1-2 years behind the competitors. It's essentially battling against the iPhone 7 ($600), Galaxy S8 ($600), and OnePlus 6 ($800)…just to put things into perspective.

If you can find me a deal for the Pixel 2XL (128GB) for <$800 in May 2018 or earlier, then I would change my position on it.

                    • +1

@Kangal: I don't need to realize we were talking about your personal preference here. Doesn't matter what I say you'll never change your mind.

My initial post was saying you could get a pixel 2 for $600ish.

Apart from the initial screen problem on the XL's, they were often getting a best in class reviews:

                      https://www.wired.com/2017/10/review-google-pixel-2/

                      https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2018/03/25/google-p…

Forbes review is interesting given they waited for the teething problems to pass before review and compare against the same year crop of phones.

Anyway, I'll stop commenting/reading this thread. Can't have a robust discussion with someone that just hates Pixels. shrugs

                      • @serpserpserp: My "hatred" of Pixels is based on rationality. I even told you that I'm ready to change my mind, and how you could do it. So if you failed to not only try, but comprehend this, then that's all you.

And I'm someone who had the Nexus One, Nexus 5, Nexus 5X…so you know where my wallet/bias stands.

In case you missed it, the Pixel 2 launched 6+ months after the competitors and had really nothing to offer at a higher price. They're taking the Apple model, but they're not in a position to demand it…hence why the Pixels haven't been a bigger success than the Nexus line. It would be biased of me to recommend them blindly. I think the Flagship/OEMs to keep an eye on are LG, Nokia, Xiaomi…but never be loyal to the brand and always judge the product for its merits.

  • Awesome. Thanks OP

  • -1

Lol almost 2k for a phone. Go pad Apple's profits more for a slightly better camera.

The smart people will get a pixel or galaxy

    • Still pretty spenny. Would rather buy a $500 phone and put the rest into something like a fab camera.

  • +2

Gotta love a thread where nearly everybody gets a neg

  • THE MORE YOU BUY THE MORE YOU SAVE, GET ON IT !!!1!!

  • Anyone have any idea how I could do this?
I am currently on the $59 per mo, 2 year contract with Telstra for a Google Pixel 2XL.
The mobile number I currently have with Telsta is the one I want to keep and sign up to get an iPhone XS Max.
Is there anyway to cancel my current pixel 2xl contract with Telstra whilst upgrading to this deal and getting the $500 off?

    • +1

payout for the remaining cost of the Pixel 2XL and termination cost of your contract obligation. Only then you can get this deal.

    • So simple, ring up Telstra and find out !

  • Pre existing customers without porting still receive a credit as well ($300.00)

    • How? I’m on a 12 month BYO contract (6 months left) if I upgrade through Telstra, contract cancels out. Can I get $300, keep my number and not get charged cancellation fees?

      • I did a 12 month BYO (Telstra) last week, I have the S9+ so didn't need an upgrade and therefore, not needing the 24m but he mentioned a 24 month contract fore pre-existing Telstra customers can receive a $300 credit, instead of the $500 port-in bonus

        • Yeah thanks! Went it asked around they did confirm 300 off for existing customers. $300 off any phone over $1000, 24 month contract $65 dollars a month cotract which inclueds 90gb of data! not a bad deal if you don't mind signing up for 2 years.

  • Telstra $65 Plan | 80GB Data | Unlimited Talk & Text | 24 Month Contract with $0 Upfront Fee on Selected Phones @ JB Hi-Fi
get a huawei p20 pro, can be sold at around $800

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/408234

  • super simple math… Telstra is fishing us.

    65 x 24 = 1536
    iPhone X max 256G 2049 - 500 discount = 1549

    So, ending up you r paying (1536+ 1549) / 24 = 129.5 per month.

    And only have 45 G data…

Unless u r going rural areas a lot. Otherwise, similar deal Optus would be a better option which gives u more data.

And if u have student email address, and even bring down another 10% off.
