You have to get a gateway, then have somewhere to run home assistant (raspberry pi is what I use, or you could just use the xiaomi mi home app if you don't care that much about further automation):

If you have the Xiaomi kit then I can share the method I used. Originally I was planning for condition like
if garage open > 5 mins then sound alarm
But I settled for
If garage open then light up the gateway
If Garage closed then switch off the light
