Hey guys a great deal on a very nice router. I am still thinking about pulling the trigger myself as i don't need it! Definitely up there with the AC68U - but this has a better discount.

Third cheapest on staticice and with the 15% off it makes it a great deal!

Be careful with these nighthawk routers - the 2.4GHz band is susceptible to constant connection drop-outs

    • +3

I've got one and have never noticed any dropouts. Best router I've ever had.

    • I returned mine gues a year ago.

    • bought one few months ago from OW, faulty after few days, can't power up, swapped another one, terrible signal and constantly drop out. refunded at the end.

  • Is it worth updating my AirPort Extreme to one of these???

    • Why would you do that? No no.

        People love these routers.

If you're with Apple's ecosystem, then no.
This and the Asus RT-68U are some of the cheaper decent routers and can be modded to run custom firmware hence their popularity.

  • And open ddrt etc is pretty stable on them… Giving you more advanced features…

  • Ia it better than Asus Rt Ac-86u?

    • This is on par with the RT-68U so no, the RT-86U should be better.

    • own AC-86 after return R7000, Asus AC86U is much much much better in signal and speed.

  • I’m looking at replacing the one I got from Optus because I have to reset it once in a few days and that’s annoying me. I’m on Optus NBN. Which modem/router is best in the range of $100-$175? Thanks!

    • I may be wrong, but I heard from JW computer that Optus NBN may not allow customers to use other brand modems. I went to the store to find a modem for my FTTN connection, one of the store sales told me that you cannot change modem if you are with Optus.

This is a router only, the modem/router version of this is the Netgear D7000.
I believe the general consensus here is to get a decent router like this one here and use it with a separate decent VDSL modem like say a Technicolor TG799vac unless you want an all in one like the D7000.
This is assuming you're on FTTN or FTTB which require VDSL2 modems.
You don't need a modem if you're on the other types of NBN.

    Great router with Asuswrt-Merlin:
    http://xvtx.ru/xwrt/

    • Is that only for the R7000 and not the R7000P? I have the P model.

  • I have just returned 2 of these….
Latest firmware update kills 5G wireless channel and also VPN doesn’t work to connect secure tunnel.

  • This router was avaiable for cheaper 4 years ago.Kept its price better than any 2014 flagship smartphone…….

  • The OEM firmware is pretty hit and miss with each version, but pair this router with the port of Merlin firmware, (shared above), and it's a rock solid choice for home networking needs.

Haven't seen it at this price level for a while either.

    • Just agreeing. Terrible default firmware but rock solid paired with Merlin, Advanced tomato or Ddwrt.

      • Is there Merlin for the R8000?

        • +1

I don't believe so. There is Advanced Tomato which is very similar and in my experience works just as well (both have their pros and cons)

          https://advancedtomato.com/downloads/router/r8000

          • @stratbargain: Thanks mate, will give it a go. Would you know if AT has that Netgear feature that combines both 5GHz channels into one?

            • +1

@CVonC: Sorry, not sure. I don't believe it's an option on the r7000 builds but the r8000 might be different

  • Is this the best cheap modem around now?

    • +1

not a modem it's a router, and has many advanced features, if you have to ask, you probably don't need something like this, a basic router or modem, depending on your connection, would probably be fine.

  • I still have a 7800N chugging away, but I'd like to upgrade the strength and range of the wifi in the house.

I have a little two part question, firstly would this be a reasonable and sensible upgrade if I connect it via ethernet to take over routing duties? Secondly, I might get HFC NBN soon, would this make sense in that scenario too?

The plan would obviously be to replace the 7800n with whatever modem I need and continue using this as a router, or would I be better off waiting and getting another all in one unit when I switch to the NBN?

I've been hesitant because I've heard the HFC service is incredibly hot or miss most places and my ADSL2 is actually pretty solid…

    Cheers

I was in a similar position. Switched over to FTTN from ADSL2 a few months ago.
Had the 7800N and got a cheap second hand R7000 which I used with Advanced Tomato and a separate modem.
The R7000 is a decent upgrade from the 7800N for the price or the Asus RT-AC68U.
I chose the R7000 over the 68U simply because I could get a used one much cheaper.

The benefit of having a separate router and modem is the ability to change either one when you want to upgrade it.
Also, it's usually cheaper to get decent router and modem separately.
That said, if you're going to be on HFC, you don't need a modem.

As for the NBN, it's a mess the way it is. On ADSL2, I could sync at 22Mpbs so I assume I'm close to the exchange.
On my current FTTN VDSL, I could only sync at 60Mpbs, so my route to the node must be bad.
FTTP would be the most ideal but even then you're at the mercy of RSP having enough CVC.
I was with Mungi, great support, but decide to swith to AussieBB since my speeds were all over the place.
During peak hours, I was getting as low as 5Mbps but now I consistently get 55+ Mbps.
Also, the most annoying part is the houses on the opposite side of my street have FTTP, :(
In short, all you can do is hope and pray that you get good HFC connection.

      • "In short, all you can do is hope and pray that you get good HFC connection."

ain't that the truth… I'm scared lol. Thanks mate.

  • Which custom firmware does everyone go for these days? Do any offer an iOS/android app similar to what Asus/Apple do?

    • Xvortex, which is the port of Merlin for the R7000.

Once installed, you can use the Asus app, (on Android anyway). Never tried it on iOS but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work.
