Something something 4gb not enough etc.

    • +10

$700 extra to jump to 8 / 256 gb. Wewww thanks MS.

    • And 128GB is getting a bit light on these days.

      • +4

        Also i5 is 2 less than i7 and 4 less than i9

  • Do you think jb willmatch the after coupon price?

    • no they will not pricematch coupon price

    • I noticed JB has Microsoft Surface GO 4GB RAM 64GB SSD $599, at the moment. Wondering how that stacks up comparative value wise? I admit I am concerned about the 4 GB RAM also, and don't want to spend too much.

Or the Surface Pro 6 8GB RAM 256GB SSD, but $1848.

I am only looking around (and wondering) at this point in time … tossing up between deciding if I want a laptop or tablet etc. Have been making do using mobile and son's IPad Air2 for so long now, but I kind of miss having full Office.

grab a cheaper Windows Tablet ? add a keyboard and mouse, full blown Windows.

        here are some suggestions

        https://www.windowscentral.com/best-cheap-windows-10-tablets

        • Thank you; shall look into these. No hurry so maybe the New Year sales will tempt me.

Surface go has abs terrible performance, I would go with this one instead if don’t have the money for more ram

        • Are you speaking from experiencing or just relaying a negative review you've read online?

          • @magic8ballgag: I’ve used one before for 1 hour on my friends, and I have a m5 6y54 which is bad enough and I still think this is terrible. It’s a pain to use. In terms of benchmark m5 is 40% faster

      • For a $200 difference id definitely go the laptop. But i guess if the fact its a true tablet is inportant to you.

Personally, i couldnt think of a situation the lack of kb would be of benefit to me

The low end model is $1350 and identical to the $1848 model (same ram, same quad core cpu) except it has 128GB SSD. $500 is an outrageous amount to pay for that extra 128GB. This model was discounted 10% just last week at the good guys. Safe to assume you'll be able to get 10% again before christmas if you monitor prices. Don't know if this is in your price range.

        • 👍 Yes, I am really still at that just looking stage and don't know what I really want. No need to buy anything at the moment; have been making do with what we have at hand for so long now I am getting really mean money-wise!

  • Can you add their insurance to this?

  • These are the dual core cpus still hey….

I have the m3 version of this laptop with 4gb ram. It's pretty good, very good for office and study work. I passed all my GP examinations using this as an awesome note taking device. I keep my laptop very trim so 4gb just works, but it would be pushing it if I wasn't tech savvy and able to keep it clean.

  • Would fortnite/roblox run smoothe on this?

    • Fortnite definitely not, Roblox might run ok I would assume. This is by no means a machine for games though
Here’s a link to a video for Fortnite on this machine: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ttPBdPHwPgM

      • Thanks for your reply.. cheers

        • No problem

    • I have the m3/4gb version and can just play rocketleague on the lowest settings

    4GB, what's on their minds.

    • Given the time of year I'd say thanksgiving

Own one of these. Fantastic laptop. Starts and shuts downs what seems almost instantly. Great price , purchased mine for 60 bucks more and still believe that was good value. My mate is an Apple freak and he was impressed with the design and build.

    • I'm using one right now, have a heap of stuff open at once, it runs like a dream.
It's not a gaming / graphics laptop, it's an ultra portable. Great build quality and materials, speakers fantastic. Great laptop, the need for 4GB is overblown, big time.

would this suit a child starting high school next year?

    • +1

If they don't drop it. The screen can't be replaced.

Otherwise, it's a fantastic study device. Pair it with the pen and keyboard and it's perfect using onenote.

      • Pair it with the pen and keyboard and it's perfect using onenote

        Is this NOT a laptop?

      • The keyboard can’t be fixed either. The whole thing will need replacing…

        https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Microsoft+Surface+Laptop+Tea…

        Step 5. Ouch.

And you gotta love that overall repairability score of…0.

        • +1

crap. thats what I was afraid off.
one thing I know for sure.. he will drop it! I need something pretty solid :(

@Aussybob: Need to find a laptop that can cop a beating.

            Good luck!

    • I would check what the school recommends first. Some give the students ones you pay for in school fees so every child ends up with the same. Bulk savings go back to school coffers etc.

    • +1

I would suggest getting your child something a bit more durable.

My daughter had a chunky Lenovo Chromebook that is still going strong after 3yrs in high school.

She drops it, spills things on it, stickers it, shoves it in her bag along with other textbooks and somehow it survives.

Not saying this Surface isn’t a good laptop. But for a student I’d think about something that can take a bit of punishment. Won’t look as good but it’ll last.

To anyone thinking the specs are awful… honestly it runs really well.

I'm just careful not to install a bunch of trash on it and limit chrome tabs etc.

If all you need it for is running chrome, watching netflix and word or excel you honestly can't go wrong with it.

    • pretty sure you can do that with cheaper laptops too

      • True but the display, battery life/ portability and build quality are much better than cheaper laptops. Some people want a premium build and are not power users/ video editors/ gamers and I think these low spec Surfaces fill that niche.

      • What cheaper laptops offer this sort of build quality?

I have stopped using my MacBook pro as I like it so much…

  • That and no USB C, or Thunderbolt… welcome to 2016.

    • +1

I’m a pro user and never have I needed either port. It depends on the work you do if these ports are needed. I wouldn’t let the lack of these ports discourage anyone

  • Hi guys,

Will I be able to replace the Windows 10S with normal Windows 10?

Will there be any additional fees that I will need to pay?

  • Does anyone know what model i5 this has? Specs only list i5 7th gen.

    • +2

      i5-7200U

  • For anyone that has this model, how many hours use on full charge to surf web/email/youtube say on half brightness?

    • +1

Not too sure about half brightness but I run it for one to two hours a day at full brightness and only seem to charge once a week.

      • So, at full brightness between 7 to 14 hours. Microsoft quote 14.5 hours, so maybe over 10 is easily achievable then with lower brightness levels.

        • +1

Yes I would say easily achievable at full brightness let alone half brightness

          • @speedyjonzalas: Wow! Such a long battery life is really impressive for an i5, it probably mostly runs at low watts when possible.

Have an older Toshiba ultrabook U840W with a 3rd gen i5 3317U and can only get between 2 to 3 hrs. out of that doing light tasks, and was only 30 mins longer when new as I don't use it often.
