Selling through PayPal

Someone is wanting to buy a phone off of me on Gumtree using PayPal. I'm concerned that they will claim that I haven't sent the phone and file a dispute. What protection do I have against a false dispute claim?

Is there a safer payment method for both involved? Here is the message they sent;
"Thanks for the reply, Actually i am buying it for my cousin as a surprise graduation gift and i will be responsible for the shipping charges via AUSPOST EMS to her address so that would not be a problem atall which means i will pay $50 AUD for the delivery charges. Let me know your final asking price of it and we can go from there and more importantly,I will like to pay you with paypal because its very easy, fast and secure to transfer money.. and if you don't have an account with PayPal you can easily set up an one by visiting www.paypal.com.au make any error on the Payment and to make everything okay with the both parties.

Best regards"

EDIT: Felt like it's a scam but hadn't used PayPal to sell so was unsure of how it can be abused. Thanks for the insight guys!

Love the part at the end where he tells you how to sign up to PayPal. +1 for scam.

  • If you actually wait for the money to ht your paypal i dont really see how they can scam you out of it. Although in saying that it doesnt sound right.
If you go an read the paypal policy they dont actually protect purchases through gumtree though. So there is no recourse on their behalf.
Hell you could even set up a new paypal account, get the money and not even send them anything and they can't do anything. Even if they open a case once it gets to human intervention from the paypal team they will close as they dont protect gumtree purchases.

Easy, stolen/unauthorised credit card funding PayPal.

Then do chargeback and PayPal will take the money back from you.

      • Or simply a fake email 'confirming' the transfer. A PayPal noob probably wouldn't spot that.

Oh OP; And for the 50th time, it's a scam.

    Obvious scam is obvious.

    1. Shipping to an address that's not theirs? Check.

    2. Offering above your asking price (for postage)? Check.

    3. Wanting to pay via a method that allows easy refunds? Check.

Safest is always cash on pick up.

  • Cash

Pretty sure Nigerian princes only use Western Union.

      • They don't buy phones off Gumtree either :p

  • LOL

  • Its a scam.

  • Definitely a scam!

  • I've done this plenty of times, I basically force them to send it as friends and family otherwise I wont send the item. A friends and family transfer cannot be claimed on paypal.

HOWEVER I have heard the graduation gift scam before

  • As if it isn’t obvious enough, this is a complete scam. The buyer wouldn’t even need to file a chargeback since PayPal’s “Seller Protection” only covers you if you send the item, with tracking, to the address nominated on the buyer’s PayPal account. The scammer will ask you to send the item to a given address via a message. They’ll then file an “Item Not Received” case and, even if you have a tracking number, it’s irrelevant since it’s not to the correct address (the one on their PayPal account). Even if you give PayPal ‘proof’ in the form of screenshots of the message requesting you send it to the alternative address, they’ll point to their policy and say “tough luck” (likely because if they side in your favour, then the buyer would just file a chargeback and leave PayPal footing the bill).

One of the older scams, so I’m surprised this is even in question, really.
