The cheapest I've seen for the popular PIA VPN.

3 Years US$46.40 (~AU$64), 5 Years US$70.40 (~AU$97).

Also a 2 years subscription is available but the best bang for your buck is the 5 years deal.

  • Any issue of streaming Netflix or YouTube? How does PIA compare to the other post - subscribe?

    • +3

Been using this for about 3 years now. No issues. Able to stream Netflix and YouTube (sometimes if it selects an overseas server it wont play Netflix…so you switch back to a Aus one) Have also used it overseas in bali and Singapore…to watch Foxtel ;).

Thanks OP…will be extending (buying) the 5 year option.

      • I've had mixed results using it to stream foreign Netflix i just stopped attempting. Also had mixed results overseas trying to stream foxtel Go and NRL Live pass. Using android. Otherwise for browsing and downloading its been very good.

    • +1

No luck streaming US Netflix if that's your aim…

  • This or NordVPN ?

    • +2

I actually have both. My PIA subscription is about to expire and I was going to renew but I just wanted to try NordVPN. It's much of a muchness really. Presentation is an opinion and, in my opinion, Nord's apps across all platforms - Mac, PC, mobile, browsers - look more polished than PIA's offerings. Nord works with Netflix whereas PIA doesn't for me. Maybe some regions would work but the ones I've tried on PIA don't work with Netflix. I don't think you can go wrong with either. That basically seems like the general consensus if you Google comparisons between the two. Speeds, I didn't do any speedtests but there's no noticeable difference between PIA or Nord for browsing/downloads.

      • have you tried BBC website and it's tv shows with NORD?
        PIA does not work

        • I dumped PIA after it was blocked by the BBC and PIA refused to change their UK server details regularly to circumvent this.

Nord works for me (as they have a huge number of servers) but can be hit or miss, you'll find a server, use that for a while and then Auntie will get around to blocking it. Then you try to find another.

Have been watching Strictly and the apprentice of late via Nord VPN.

When does new subscription start? After the purchase and provided with login details or you have to activate it to start the subscription? Still got few months on current subscription…

I'm tempted. But I'm also wondering do these things typically drop in price over time?

My annual sub is $29 a year. Locking in 5 years to save a bit stops me from shopping around for a better deal in years 2,3,4 and 5.

And 5 years is a long time in internet time. Who knows what's around the corner.

    Thoughts anyone?

    • In the same boat here

      • +1

I’ve been shopping around for VPN for years. You won’t get a better price on PIA. I think this is even cheaper than what I paid for stack social years ago.

        • Good to know.

VPNs still remain a pretty niche product. Can't see mass uptake driving the price dramatically down.

Still, I don't think I can commit for 5 years!

  • How comparable is this to ExpressVPN? any high latency? Mainly use it to stream Netflix/Youtube other stuff and access some websites/content.

With expressVPN, I just set the DNS on the tv/ipad and it never has to be touched again. Is it as simple as this?

    • Express VPN has easy to use addons for Kodi and Android box. PIA more difficult setup on Kodi and Android Box with clunky addons (open VPN) from my experience. Others may have better experiences.

Also as mentioned previously Netflix is a bit hit and miss if wanting to watch US content.

      • Can you watch BBC tv shows from BBC website with Expressvpn?

  • I'd recommend cactus VPN

  • +1

How would they compare to VanishedVPN? They’re Aussie based from what I understand.

    • Also interested, although in the past any VPN providers have been requested to pass on customer data and Australia have been digital chumps in so many ways

Anyone else trying to decide between this and Windscribe?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/418272

I've heard better success rates for Netflix US on Windscribe, but not sure about the rest of the features/security.

    • +1

My chief concern with Windscribe is I don't know how to trust a company offering cheap lifetime subscriptions.

Meanwhile, PIA seems to have a more sustainable business model

  • I've tried Nord, PIA, and torguard, which I am currently on.

Nord was easily the worst, extremely slow speeds. Avoid

PIA was alright the but the speeds were average.

Torguard is the fastest but their website and billing is not user friendly. The Australian servers are solid however

All three of them seem to have some issues with NZ servers with random websites not loading correctly, torrents not working etc.

I have heard good things about ProtonVPN which is based in Switzerland. But I haven't tried it, if I wasn't stuck to torguard I'd try it out.

All the VPN sites have deals like this if you google them, so I'd recommend trailing a few out, otherwise you'll be stuck using a service that doesn't work for you.

    • Horses for courses as Nord is not to be avoided if you want to watch the BBC Iplayer.

Works fine for me, streams well.

      • All of them should work for watching iplayer.

        • PIA I don’t think so unless they’ve changed tack recently.

        • you can't watch bbc iplayer with PIA

Anyone know if this works in China? Have only been successful with Express VPN in the past.

    • I was there recently, it didn't work. Pretty well all VPNs are blocked, but ExpressVPN worked.

I setup my own server with Outline and ended up using that all the time.

  • Been using PIA for a few years now, no complaints except their windows client can be tempremental (just use OpenVPN). I tried a cheaper VPN & the network performance was woeful.

  • How is this against PUREVPN? They have a great black Friday deal aswell.

  • Can this be used inside China to by pass the great firewall?

    • +1

No, from my experience. Proxy works but really slow.

  • Cheers!

  • Got the Windscribe VPN in the other post, that is cheeper. I purchased 3 year. Not sure if i will use it that long, but its cheep.

  • Is 107 USD a good deal for nord 3 yrs?

    • +1

IMO it is. I paid US$97 for 2 years. Would have gone for 3 had they offered it back then 2 mths ago.

    • Is this the cheapest?

      • +1

75% off. That’s all I could find. Currently with Windscribe. It’s not a very tempting price Imo.

  • Gosh darn it. This always happens soon after I renew my subscription.

  • Tried NordVPN, got half the speeds and inconsistent ones than I do with PIA. Didn’t like their client either.

  • My NordVPN expired, so i jumped onto PureVPN yesterday for US $1.15 a month for 5 years.

Though i miss the Socks5 proxy for running programs through, PureVPN registers as a network adapter, so some apps can be easily bound to that (i even installed qBitTorrent [as it has adapter binding in advanced options] and used torrent ip check to verify the behaviour and it works well) so they can't operate on anything but that interface, combining that with Split Tunnelling i can browse outside VPN for full speed but use VPN for secure apps still, though not as easily as with a proxy though.

The PureVPN does have a built in WiFi Router as well though i haven't tried it yet.

With Nord i found i had to keep on changing socks5 proxy server, with PIA i didn't.

If this was available and i had known about it yesterday i probably would have gone with PIA over PureVPN for the proxy so i didnt have to muck with adapter binding.

  • Thx OP

  • delete comment plz

  • How is this for accessing netflix US? I use nord and it is ok. Any other options?

    • It works on very few of the US servers (Texas worked for me last time iirc).

  • What would be the renewal price if I sign up for this?

  • Anyone tried cyberghost VPN? Been eyeing them as there is a 2.50/month for 3 years. The other is nordvpn for I think 75% off for 3 years as some others have mentioned above.

Main use would be for Netflix US access and would like decent speeds for downloading from time to time.

  • Cheapest I've ever seen this! Thanks!

  • How long did it take to get the account details from PIA ?

    • If you redeemed the code correctly, you should be receiving a username and password within minutes.

      • Thanks for the reply , Hmm must have done something wrong

  • Does the code have expiry date?

I messaged support about extending existing account but have not heard back yet.

I am thinking I will just wait until current account expires before activating with new code but can't see when it expires.

    • +1

You must redeem the code within 30 days otherwise it expires.

      • Thanks. In that case, hopefully they reply to the support ticket I raised as my current accont expires in April 2019.

        • Ive been waiting for support to reply to my ticket since about 11am this morning

        • I'm still waiting for support too……. ⏱

  • when does this expire?

  • Thank Op. Going to give PIA a go for 1 year.

    Total $29.11 AUD ($2.42 pm)

  • Accidentally purchased the 2-year sub without the promo code - foolish, I know, but the promo code entry point is placed rather covertly.

Any advice as to how I should rectify this? Have attempted to cancel and resubscribe but StackSocial haven't responded in over 24 hours and the sale ends soon.

    • +1

      Under the deal terms

      Terms
Unredeemed licenses can be returned for store credit within 15 days of purchase. Once your license is redeemed, all sales are final.

If you haven’t redeemed the code yet, I assume you could return it and get store credit. Be warned, you can’t use store credit with any promo in the future and I’m not sure of the validity, could be 3 months or so.

    • Try to contact them through one of their social media accounts, I DMed them on Twitter and got reply within hours.

      • +1

        Thanks for the advice mate.

Got in touch with them via email and they refunded 40% of what I paid. Now that's good footy.

        Highly recommend StackSocial.

  • The price for 5 years seems to be :
    $117.33

Did they increase price from 70.40?
    Or am I missing something?

    Thank you.

    • +1

Did you use the promo code BFSAVE40 ?

      • oh! Thanks! I will try that.

  • Thanks OP! I have updated my subscription to the 5 year offer. No more paying $39.95USD per year!

  • Where's the option to put the promo code? It goes straight to complete order

    • On the checkout page under "Order Summary" you find a promo button that will open a box for you to input the code.

  • Here is my experience try to merge/extend existing subscription, first, I got this response:

Thank you for contacting us here at PIA Customer Support.
