Dick Smith TELSTRA T-Touch Tab + Accessory Pack $199 Free Delivery

90

I've been eyeing this for a while and this is the cheapest I've seen it as. It's still listed as $279 in other websites (Officeworks / Big W).

Free delivery and includes an accessory pack that includes a Fruwt Reversible Neoprene case and a Huawei in car charger.

I might have a go at getting Officeworks to pricematch this since I'm not really after the accessory pack.

The price is great, the device isn't.

Yeah, definitely not top of the range. I'm actually after a cheap Android tablet to use for kids educational apps for my son, but I'm not confident enough to try those cheapies off fleabay…so I think this should suit.

  • price reflects device quality

  • still beats ebay 200 bux stuffs….if ya rly on that much of a budget, please, even kids know the difference.

  • Note: resistive touch screen.

  • I was interested too, but the android tab offered by optus seemed better.

I don't understand why people are so dismissive of the T-Touch Tab. Yes, it's not very good compared to the Galaxy Tab or an iPad, but for $200 is pretty damn good. I'm not necessarily saying it is better than the Optus tablet. If you have a budget of ~$200 and you want a tablet, this is a valid choice.

    • I guess the issue is that it is only recently reduced to $200

I have one, works great on Next G, in my opinion much better than optus one, obviously not as good as my Ipad :)
But for the price, it is much better and it does what it states.

    • Have you tried the optus one? i am buying an optus one soon and interested why you say this ?

"in my opinion much better than optus one"

      • My Tab’s touchscreen, although also resistive, is a class above that of the rival Telstra device.

  • People just see the brand 'Telstra' and immediately dismiss it

    • It is actually a rebranded Huawei IDEOS S7 tablet.

      • Whats really interesting here is that Telstra went with Huawei and Optus went with ZTE Its like they swapped!

In the past the modems from telstra are generally zte and modems for optus are huawei

  • gets more use than my iPad.

  • Same price as the optus Mytab's online price, and it's much better apparently.

  • this and the Smart-Touch are the best things ever to come out of the place besides me leaving it years ago. Really, T is terrible on all else.

Given the accessory kit is (over)priced at $49 this is a bargain.

I have one and they are actually reasonably good. The resistive screen works well. z4root and link2sd take care of the limited memory capacity by allowing you to move apps to the SD card. Next G network provides great coverage at an almost competitive price.

The only downside is the limited battery life. I get 4 hours 'talk time' at most and around 12 hours standby, so the thing spends most of its life connected to the charger. The charger uses a very small plug which is prone to breaking and difficult to buy. The car charger in the accessory kit has a stupid coiled cable which puts a lot of strain on the connector and limits the distance from the power socket to about 50cm.

I did hear through a contact of mine in Telstra that the t-Touch has not been selling well and Telstra has a warehouse full of them. Possibly due to the Osborne Effect from the rumoured impending release of more Android tablets.

There is also talk about Android 2.2 becoming available for this tablet 'real soon now'. Supposedly Huawei has completed development and it is ready for imminent release.

    • Reviews on them havent helped either, most reviews find them sluggish and pretty piss poor. I gave one a test in store and didnt shell out the dollars. Very disapointed, maybe the next version will be better.

EDIT as a matter of interest to myself and others thinking of buying, can you remove all the Telstra rubbish in them, just wondering if they run better without it? Maybe an owner of the device can share some info

      • The poor speed is down to the terrible Launcher Application Huawei (or Telstra??) uses. Just go to Android Market and download ADW.Launcher or Launcher Pro (I prefer ADW.Launcher) and it will be much more responsive.

Also on XDA Developers there are already "vanilla" roms available the remove the Telstra crap off the device.

For $199 these are a good buy, especially if you still get 3GB start up credit like you did before.

      • Yes, you can easily removed the Telstra bloat off them. Use z4root to root the device then Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware apps from the system folder.

  • Any good for video playback?
