Palit GTX 460 768MB $139 from PC Case Gear

110

Quite a good price: http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=gtx+460+price%3…

There's also a few other 460s on sale at PCCG, but they are less of a bargain performance-wise:

Ed: only the last 2 links still available now, both 1GB SE versions for $169

Ed 2: New card on sale: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…
Palit GTX 460 1GB SE for $159 I can comment that the cooling solution looks slightly more advanced than the very basic looking one on the original deal.

  • Damn, nice price. Could be worth buying two and SLI-ing them?

    • What is "Sli-ing"?

      • running two of these rather than one

oh ok, i am so behind with PC technology these days. How do you connect the video output to a monitor if it runs two? Also do motheroards these days have 2 AGP slots? (excuse the ignorance)

I'm not entirely sure myself :P but I think the processors just work together, and you just still have one output from one card (but I think you can set it up to have 2+ monitors using both card's outputs)

I know the cards are connected physically with an additional connector in the case… so they can communicate well together etc. You'll have to wiki to find all the details :P

          Mangew:
It doesn't "double" the power but often it is less expensive and more powerful to use two cheaper cards together in SLI than a single, more expensive card. It also increases the number of monitors you can have connected to your computer - I would assume that each single 460GTX has two video outputs.

However the downside is that today's video cards are GIGANTIC and physically fitting two into your case is often impossible. Another con is that to run these hulking cards in SLI it uses a lot of power. As a side note, AGP is basically a dead technology and video cards now use the PCI-Express slots on the motherboard (and most boards come with more than one). I'm by no means a video card guru but I hope that helps a little :)

With 2 cards in SLI, you basically just have 2 or more (usually identical, since there are restrictions) Nvidia graphics cards installed on the same motherboard and connected with An SLI connector (1 for every graphics card above 1) The drivers will recognize that there is more than 1 card there and ask you what to do, so you tell it SLI and that's about it :)

Less complicated than reading Wikipedia if anyone's interested

  • Wow, not bad at all. Building a new PC and was going to keep the old graphics card because I only need something basic but at this price for a 460 it's tempting.

Watch out for the SE versions. They have less shader units and therefore lower performance than a regular gtx 460.

    • Fairly certain SE versions only come in 1GB. So should be safe with this one.

edit: whoops. must have been referring to the other cards linked.

    • Under most situations the 768MB will out perform it. It really seemed like more of a move by the marketing department: "Let's make them think they're buying a more powerful card by using more memory!"

  • any review of this display card?

  • Yeah its fairly "old".
But to sum it up, cut down version of the 1GB card. And its not only different in the memory size but the bus as well.
