How am I supposed to type in load "",8,1* without a functioning keyboard?

And not even a Tac-2 joystick. For shame.

    • I'm pretty sure the same manufacturer is developing a full-sized C64 with a functioning keyboard, but yeah this doesn't really help you if that's what you're after.

    • +1

      USB keyboard?

    • +1

      there is a digital keyboard.

Wow, this is really nostalgic for me.
I still have the original Commodore 64 that I bought around 1984, including the original tape drive (Yes Tape drive!!) that I bought with it. I also own two disc drives that I purchased sometime later including one that I modified to write on the back of the floppy discs.
As well as all that I have the Commodore monitor and a Tac-2 joystick.
Now I am showing my age!

    • +5

In my day, I used a stick and drew pictures in the dirt.

      • +5

@dangerdanger, That's ok, back in my day I hadn't even evolved beyond being an amoeba. I floated.

Seriously @Toimr2, your post makes me even more nostalgic (and a bit jealous). Thanks for reviving the memories.

    • +3

Toimr2, did you use turbo tape - that was the goods! Typed the whole thing in assembly language, took a couple of days, copying out of APC magazine.

Then 1541 disc drive, can still remember the noises!

Mate had Icepik (sp?) game freeze/copy cartridge and Command Control joystick, they were the biz too!

      • I preferred my Dattel Action Replay 2 for freezing games :)

    • +1

Remember all the excitement about sprites, I had a VIC 20 and was jealous of the C64 when it came out… used to program it in assembly language.
Rodney Zacks, Programming the 6502. sooo sad 😀

      • +1

I had a VIC20 too. I couldn't afford a C64. My uncle gave me a serial port light pen for Christmas that year, I had no bloody idea what to do with it.

  • +18

Not a bargain. The new Commodore Amiga is way better and has been out for a while now

  • +4

    Missing Wizball and Microprose Soccer.

    • +1

      Fort Apocalypse?

    • +7

Head over Heels, and the Last Ninja trilogy are notable omissions too

  • +2

now with latest firmware, you can import 1000s of original c64 games. there are also 1000s of homebrew games too.

  • +6

I would totally buy this if leisure suit Larry was included

  • +2

Can't wait for this. Already have two raspberry pi's but this is so much easier to use.

  • +1

I am assuming this is the NTSC version because it is shipping from the US. I recall the 8-bit Guy saying he got a PAL version and had issues on some of his devices. Do you think it would happen here but in reverse?

    • +2

8-Bit Guy later reviews the US version and all seems good now. Must of been fixed in firmware.

      • +2

8-Bit Guy is in the US, so no problem with the US version working for him, he had problems with the AU/UK/EU version….

Since this is the US version (Amazon US) concern is that it will have problems here.

  • classic…

  • +1

    Galaga?

  • +2

    1942 and Paperboy?

  • +1

    no commando?

  • I remember playing Commando at the local arcade and loving it. Then I got real excited when I bought it on the the C64 (on tape). I can't remember if it had turboload or not with those weird flashing borders. Anyway I still remember to this day having an absolute ball playing the first three levels…. and then game over. Nothing more. Finished forever. No more levels.

Its good to see C64 getting some love. Still the best selling computer model of all time.

Some fantastic games for it, Wizball, Last Ninja 2, School Daze, Little Computer people. Id like to see a Bards Tale remake.

Its a pity that even the worst game on the NES still gets more oxygen than the best games on C64, Amstrad, Amiga or Spectrum.

  • +3

I miss Zzap!64… Their review format remains unsurpassed {multiple reviewers per game} imo. I guess we have metacritic now…

    • Agreed - there is a guy selling a DVD of all issues scanned, a must own!

  • +3

    Yes! Impossible Mission!
    Stay a while…. stay forever!!!

    • I never figured out what he says immediately before that.
"Da da daaa ba ceetaa. Stay a while… stay foreverrrrr!!!"

  • Forget it, doesn't have Slap Fight.

  • No 'How to be a Complete Bastard', no sale.

  • I'm waiting for the IBM 5000 mini

    • They should redo the IBM 5170, I stupidly threw it out when I bought a 486. I mean not with the original hardware, modern hardware, I really liked the case.

  • +1

I looked at this when it first came out, but Monty on the Run is the only Monty game - and that's the worst of the 3 Monty Mole games released on C64

  • +1

I had all the Advanced dungeons and dragons games on disk with my C64 with hundreds of games, threw it all away :( but this was 20 years ago.

Loved Paradroid, rolands ratrace and boulder dash and there was so many I cant remember the names.

  • This launch stalled due to games, but now you can play any ROMs on it. Worth a second look.

  • This deal is back on - but now $87.86.
