Most Unfunny Australian Comedians

Suffered the displeasure of Watching Dave Hughes recently, probably the least funny person I've had the misfortune to watch.

Have no idea how these people make a living as comedians.

Anyway, vote on who you think is the most unfunny:

  • Sammy J, leans on a piano and a puppet (what is this 1920?) and still isn't funny.

  • +2

All except Carl Baron and Jim Jeffries.

    Alex Williamson's pretty good to

    • Steve Hughs
      Becky Lucas
      Brandon Burns

Heaps of other good Aussie comics.

      Sam Campbell
      John Cruickshank
      Daniel Townes

I'm bad with names but those come to mind.

  • +9

    Kate Langbroek

  • Jim Jefferies the scrub. No one wants to hear it bud!

    • -2

isaac butterfield is much worse than JJ. he's trying so hard to be like bill burr but failing miserably.

    • +9

Jim Jefferies used to be absolute gold, full loose cannon mode making American talk show hosts piss themselves worrying about what was going to come out of his mouth next.

Since he got his own show he's sold out completely and has an unfunny SJW virtue-signalling schtick routine, unfortunately.

      • +1

absolutely right. except i didn't expect to see that kind of comment coming from 'Smashed Avo'

i thought you might be a beard toting hipster vegan feminist SJW yourself….

      • +1

watch this interview closely. he starts off all serious (look at JJ's face he's not having it) the audience is completely silent, until he breaks the awkward silence by slipping the ocean gag at the end.

system has had some good ones over the years. Usually leading with Your account has been placed in the penalty box, but I'm still waiting for the punchline…

    • +3

I think the punchline is all the mods getting together and laughing at us.

  • +5

Hannah gadsby! watched her whole special and it was TERRIBLE. only wached it because of the hype and reviews. so, so bad..
almost as bad a rebel wilson

    • At least Rebel’s TV series Bogan Pride was funny.

  • +8

    Peter Helliar

    • +3

Not only worse than Dave Hughes, super annoying everytime he talks on the Project, stopped watching the show almost completely.

      • +2

Still not as bad as the sanctimonious pest Waleed or Carrie "cry at everything" Bickmore.

  • +3

Anh Do, that refugee story is so tired.

    • Completely, when i first saw him on stage I didn't know know he was a comedian. It's like, great painter but where's the comedy?

    • Been a while since I've seen stuff from him, but he seems more like the passive commedy type. As in, he's funny when he's doing other stuff but not funny enough for an entire show.

    • Our apologies Mr Dutton.

  • I wouldn't mind hearing about which Australian comedians that you guys actually like, maybe I'll discover some new talent

    • +9

      Scott Morrison.
      Bill Shorten.

Check them out on a show called "Question Time", it's a classic.

    • +4

      Tom Gleeson as posted above.

Mad As Hell is also funny.

      • +12

        ❤ Micallef

        • +1

I love micallef, I'd watch any show he was in just cause he was in it. TBMG is pretty funny

        • Micallef has been the only Australian comedian that's consistently funny. The Micallef Programme was absolute gold and still holds up today, the others on that show were excellent as well - Wayne Hope, Roz Hammond, Francis Greenslade - all very funny people.

          Clarke & Dawe

hmm, that's about it for good aussie comedy though, it's a bit of a barren wasteland

    • See here.

    • +3

      Carl Barron
Jimeoin (dunno if he's actually Australian though)

    • -5

When he used to be on TV - David Letterman

      • He's Australian? Well you learn something everyday…

        • Not Australian but great to see for a laugh.

    • +1

      Paul Mcdermott

    • +2

Aunty Donna are probably my favourite Aussie comedians.

Note - they're act is absurdist and surrealist comedy so it can be a bit niche.

Matt Okine, Neel Kolhatkar, Lawrence Leung.

    • +5

      Sam Pang is always great

      • +3

I like watching "Have you Been Paying Attention" - very funny show and they get some really good people on it. Because they interact you aren't getting too much of anyone.

        • Matry Sheergold FTW. Can't get enough of him on that show.

  • +17

    Joel Creasey.
Dude that uses his overtly obvious orientations to get ahead in TV.
Just because you're gay and laugh at your own lines doesn't mean you're funny.

    • But he's a star darling!!

    • +2

I enjoyed watching a few of his, he hardly laughs at his own lines. More expessive and better impressions than most old comedians I say, get with the times ay

    • +1

I just wish I could upvote this more than once.

  • +1

    Australian Politicians as a group

  • Jean Kittson.

  • -1

    Thebuttsman

  • Jack Watts

    • On the field or off?

  • +1

    what about Akmal?

  • +1

I'm surprised Sam Simmons and Demi Lardner haven't been mentioned yet. I hate that type of "comedy".

    • -1

      …sam simmons is hilarious!

    • Couldn't upvote this enough. Although I assume nobody had mentioned them because it's generally accepted they aren't comedians, they're just annoying

  • dave hughes was probably funny 15 years ago

  • elliot goblet i despise that guy!
i actually don't mind judith lucy but i admit she's an acquired taste

  • +2

I don't love most Australian comedians but Kath and Kim are hilarious. And the guys from Superwog. And the girls from The Katering Show.

Hughesie was funny for about 5 minutes when he was on the ABC a thousand years ago.

I didn't even realise Julia Morris and Rover were comedians, neither are funny. Wil Anderson was never funny.

I don't know who half the other people are on here but that's because I don't get most TV channels and it would require an electrician to sort that and I'm lazy.

    • +1

Hmm, u sure Will Anderson is never funny?

    • Get an apple TV or similar and watch the shows through streaming or catchup

  • +3

Hughesy, We You Have a Problem

  • +2

All of them suck. We try too hard.

Nothing makes me cringe more than a comedian struggling to suppress their own laughter at their bad jokes. The only person I can deal with doing that is Seinfeld.

    • +1

They don't try to hard to make jokes, they try to hard to make jokes that won't anger the PC crowd.

Or, ironically, they'll try to hard to appeal to the other group and just come off like idiots.

  • +3

    Hannah gadsby

  • +1

Off topic but Wally Lewis doing the channel 7 sport is utter painful

  • +3

Hamish & Andy. I'd beat one to death with the severed head of the other if it was ok.

    • -2

Hamish and Andy are not comedians and have never talked themselves up as ones.

      They are radio hosts.
      Completely different.

  • +2

Tim Ferguson from Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS) was funny and still is.
His show “don’t forget your toothbrush” was classic TV.

    • “Don’t forget your tooth brush” was a great show in its time.

  • +4

Hamish & Andy. They are not at all funny but find each other hilarious. Can't even finish a story without snickering at each other. It baffles me how they ever got on radio/TV… plus most of those mentioned above.

    Edit:typo

    • -4

      Not comedians.

      • +3

From Wikipedia "Hamish & Andy are an Australian comedy duo formed in 2003 by Hamish Blake and Andy Lee."

        • -3

Just because that's what Wikipedia says doesn't mean anything.
For comedians they don't ever do stand up.

          • +2

@treeman: Sorry I missed the part in the OP that said 'Strictly Stand Up Comedians'. Both Wikipedia's for Hamish Blake & Andy Lee define them as Australian Comedians. Whether they do stand up or not is irrelevant

            • -2

@Destin: Going by your theory Kyle Sandilands is a comedian.

              • +1

@treeman: If you're a fan of Hamish & Andy that's fine but I don't find their 'school boy' antics, snickering and private jokes between themselves funny. I'm not sure what Kylie Sandilands has to do with anything but I've linked some relevant information below.

Again, from Wikipedia - the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web *Reference

"Kyle Dalton Sandilands (born 10 June 1971) is an Australian radio host living in Sydney. He is currently the co-host, with Jacqueline Henderson, better known as Jackie O, of the weekday morning radio program The Kyle and Jackie O Show" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Sandilands

"Hamish Donald Blake (born 11 December 1981) is an Australian comedian, actor, and author from Melbourne. Since 2003, he has worked with Andy Lee as part of the comedy duo Hamish and Andy." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamish_Blake

"Andrew Thomas "Andy" Lee (born 24 May 1981) is an Australian comedian, musician and children's writer. He is known for working alongside Hamish Blake as part of the comedy duo Hamish & Andy." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Lee_(comedian)

The community clearly define Hamish & Andy as comedians and Kylie Sandilands as a Radio Host. If you feel the information provided by Wikipedia is incorrect you can change it here.

Early Gary McDonald (pre-McDonald’s sponsorship) “The Norman Gunston Show” before “Mother & Son”
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8bKg9tMAxt8

  • +2

Rebel Wilson. Pitch Perfect 1 was funny but everything after that- blah.

    • I agree. If they had left her entire role out of Bridesmaids it would have been a better movie.

I refuse to watch anything with her in it.

  • +3

Judith Lucy gets a big thumbs up from me. The male in me never wants to hear jokes about tampons and blood from the front, period!

  • +6

Nazeem Hussain. He headlined a comedy show we went to. Biggest buzz kill ever. Long winded stories that went nowhere and all ended in "I've got different coloured skin and Aussies are casually racist".
You can pick the low hanging comedic about once per set, don't fill 60 minutes with it.

    • and all ended in "I've got different coloured skin and Aussies are casually racist"

Haven't your heard? "So and so are -ist" passes as humour these days.

  • +1

For me it would have to be those 2 radio hosts Hamish & Andy. I don't get how they are/were so popular.

    • +3

You still in the import/export business?

      • +2

        He is an architect

  • +1
    • are you suggesting all these comedians will try to sue ozbargain for defamation? :P

  • The most effective comedy is when it is funny but also speaks a “truth” to you. Personally the funniest show I’ve seen for the last two years are the “Upfront” shows which is a collection of lady comedians for the Melbourne comedy festival. Savagely funny, subversive and a shared experience. I usually laugh so hard my abs muscles hurt, but a lot of people wouldn’t relate so they think it is unfunny. I’ve been to a lot of comedy shows, over the years, and I’m tired of the dick jokes and the my girlfriend/wife doesn’t understand me jokes - in the end you just sympathise with the girlfriend. My money, my choice and that is the best way to support who you like, go to the gigs and watch their work.

    • sometimes true, but when the truth is grossly exaggerated or turns into hate speech it instantly becomes unfunny.

everyone has different tolerance levels though and certain things might hit someone personally more than others. eg. Apu simpsons.

      don't like it - don't watch it.

      • +1

I agree with you on the hate speech; lazy stereotypes and swearing for shock value are also way beyond their use by dates. I’m two minds about Apu - however, I think guys should be more offended by Homer and Bart; they aren’t flattering characterisations.

I don’t mind “off” jokes. One joke I found really funny was this guy saying of Mueller, that “they hadn’t seen anyone get that far into the mind of a President since John Wilkes Booth”, followed up with “too soon”.

        • I agree that there's nothing funny about swearing or making people cringe, and won't watch a comedian who needs to stoop to these levels.

I have no issues with any of the Simpson's characters - I'm happy to laugh at the similarities I have with Homer, and the similarities someone else might have with Apu, and really don't care whether that person finds it funny or not.

Politically-incorrect and "off" jokes can be hilarious. Laughter is a good cure for getting too serious.

          • @SlickMick: Completely agree - but edgy jokes do need to be funny, not just insulting. Some Comedians don't see that and the joke is worse when it falls flat.

  • +9

…any lesbian comedian talking about being a lesbian.

    • +4

      or feminist

      • -1

        Eurydice Dixon.

        *dons helmet and riot shield*

        • she's dead now.

        • ouch. I've been googling all these comedians I've never heard of. What I found for her isn't funny at all.

          However, your comment is hilarious.
