  • What’s TV streaming? Just your standard channels?

    • +3

It is also STAN and NETFIX, but you need an account, and can only use on the mobile or tablet apps, capped at SD quality. No tethering of any kind, this will count towards the normal usage.

      • Oh awesome. That’s useful, mines due. Signed up last year for $30 and 17gb.

Tempted to wait for the JBhifi $200 voucher with Telstra.

Are these sim only plans about the best we get?

For now maybe but 12 months is an absolute eternity when it comes to mobile plans in Australia.

I'm 100% certain that a better deal will emerge from the month-to-month/prepaid cohort during this time.

No Deal can convince me to lock myself in for longer than 3 months tops!

          • +1

@ginmi: Agreed, I was tempted to switch to a postpaid service (never been on anything but prepaid) but as I was about to move my provider (woolworths mobile) bumped up their 5GB plan to a 10GB plan and added an extra 70GB of data banking to everyone's plans. In 12 months I've gone from 3-4GB to 10GB and haven't really paid more. Other prepaid providers are doing exactly the same, Boost and Aldi Mobile being great examples too.

Don't think I can ever lock myself into a big contract.

    • Data free Netflix, Stan, ABC KIDS iview, ABC ME, ABC iview up to 1.5Mbps.

1.5Mbps ~ SD quality is kinda useless imo.
But the 10% discount is good

  • +3

damn it, i recontract $35 last week. should have wait.. :-(

    • +1

Same. I jumped on the deal at $35 for 30GB a few months ago, as it was so much better than 3GB for 30 a month :(

      • Sometimes they'll bump you over on the live chat. Will restart your 12 month contract though.

        • Tried, got told that been lock in contract. Cant applied discount as off the promotion was on from today.

    • Call them up if you haven't already. They may be able to help you out.

  • Nice deal, glad I waited.

  • what happens after the 12 month plan if you dont renew or find another deal? does it go to month to month?

    • I think same offer will work for 24 month except for add-on.

    • It should stay at the same discounted price. I'm currently on $22.5/month for 3GB since the Friends and Family 25% offer. So tempted to upgrade to this one.

      • 3gb?

      • Wasnt it $18.75 a month for 3gb?

  • +1

So it's the same as student prices now?

    • +1

      "Not available with other discounts".
So yeah, it's the same as student price now.

      • Give them a call and ask to apply your student discount code of you have one, i recently did this with the click frenzy sale so I got the price of the 50gb plan here and 2 months free

  • -1

tempting prices, but waiting for a discounted mobile plan deal where it works out you can sell the phone & put it back in the bill & end up the remaining to pay you have a 200gb sim for around $30pm for 24m

  • does any one know if it's possible to upgrade to the $31 plan without paying ETF if you're current stuck in a 12 month contract on a 15GB/$30 plan?

    • usually if its a higher priced plan there is no fee to upgrade, so possible you can, just ask on chat

    • depending on how long you've been on the contract, they are able to waive it. I've always been able to get it waived so long as it's more than a month after the contract started.

    • Had similar contract due expiring on March, moved to 30GB/$35 plan and they waived the ETF over the chat. However, they did charge $18.6 as a service charge next month.

  • Damn just ported from Virgin to Optus a week back on the same plan. :-(

    • +1

I'm a similar position but still waiting. Really hoping for an even better deal around Xmas :D

    • You can call them and ask to re-contract. Your contract will start again from now but you will get the new discounted plan. I did the same.

  • my $36, 20gb plan expires in may….fingers crossed for some similar value plans then!

  • great plans, I got this deal a month ago for the 50GB, they let me stack a loyalty discount I have as well (AND a 20% off that carried over from my previous 30GB deal), which means I only end up paying $28/month for it!

    • Same here im paying $35 for 58gb haha :)

    • Holy moly that's wild

    • how did you get the loyalty discount?

      • +1

I think I was just on chat sorting out another plan with them, and the rep asked "is there anything else I can do to put a smile on your face today?", and so I just mentioned how we've been with them a long time, and wondered if they could do anything to further discount my plan cost, and they went and talked to their supervisor to try get an extra $10 off my plan, but weren't able to get that so they just gave me another 10% off. May want to note that I was talking to a rep from the billing team, and they tend to be a lot more able to give extra things like that to keep you as a happy customer (versus sales team reps).

  • Currently paying $49 for 20GB with Telstra and haven't noticed anything exemplary with Telstra's network. Will switch back tonight.
EDIT: How likely are Telstra to match this?

    • +4

You can get on Telstra chat and negotiate $39/30GB, don't give up if the first chat rep says no.

      • And xmas bonus data of 5gb. Also, I managed to get peace of mind added as well. So $39 for 35gb and Peace of Mind.

    • -1

I just got emailed from Telstra about re contracting for $39 12 months for 30gb

      • I'll see but that's still more expensive. I'm suburban Melbourne and don't believe in the Telstra premium. I'll settle for 35gb for 39

        • I suppose it comes down to whatever network you need in your area and what you feel is most reliable.

For me it comes down to unlimited and full access to all AFL, NRL and A-League games on my phone with Telstra as I love sport. But each to their own.

  • Can I had apple watch subscription to this? What if I have an existing Optus broadband, does the additional $10 off work?

    • Apple Watch number share is free for the first 12 months if you activate it before end of the year.
Edit: Oh I think I misunderstood your question, ignore my answer lol

  • You can do the $8 (total $39 for 30 Gb) more for Telstra, depends if you believe Telstra is better for your situation (i.e coverage)

    6 months ago, $40 for 30GB
    3 months ago, $36 for 30GB
    now $31.5 for 30GB

I guess the deal next year will be better. :)

    • This is 100% guaranteed! 😉

    • That's why never go into contract for more than 12 months.

  • Does unused data get rolled over similar to Virgin?

    • Nope

  • +1

does anyone know if its possible to downgrade without paying ETF? currently on the $36/30gb p/m

    • No. They don't allow. They don't want to loose.

  • +1

Great deals. I'm currently on the tail end of a 24 month optus plan (3 months to go) and found out it will cost $180 to pay it out. I contacted their support and asked if they could waive it if I sign up for a new SIM only plan. They naturally said no, so I told them how Telstra will pay other carriers contract early-exit fees if customers switch over (Telstra pay up to $200 I think) so I was thinking about switching to them. Optus were like BON VOYAGE lol they didn't care … they wanted their $180 contract fee more than keeping a customer for another 12 months. Oh well Telstra it is.

    • +1

I’m not surprised, seems they value the new customers more than their existing ones. Besides you probably are probably the big spender , so no convincing enough for them cutting deal for you

  • Great deal!! Might also be worth it if you pop in to an Optus shop to see if they can do better… I ended up with 45 gb on this plan.

  • Be careful - their list of included countries has changed. The only country I used is now no longer included.

  • Looking to jump onto one of the iPhone XS plans and possibly a SIM only plan for the wife with Optus shortly but I'm not sure if I should jump now or wait as I've never recontracted near Xmas before.

Do telcos usually offer bigger discounts as Xmas gets closer or are the current discounts the best we're likely to see?

    • +1

Normally there 3/4 periods when to recontract. Xmas promo, Pre-end of financial year promo (March-early April) and click frenzy september or black friday.

      • So do we assume that this is as good as its gonna get, or do the telcos usually bring out better/more offers even closer to Xmas, what's the general consensus?

        • I've been weighing up switching the last few months (4) and watching Telstra/Optus/etc. for deals and this looks to be the best I've seen from Optus - just signed up in fact.

  • Impressive. I am at the tail end of my optus sim only contract and looking to upgrade to even better value than this. Might hold out longer for even better value deal

  • -3

Optus coverage so bad , price match with Vodafone

    • voda does not price match.

      • I price matched a deal about 6 months ago.

  • Currently paying $40 per month for 30gb.. Have around 3 months left on current contract.. live chat person said it would cost $60 to change over so gave it a miss

    • Apparently the billing department have more away. Might be an idea to call them up..

  • $21.50pm if you already have home broadband with them (doesn't even have to be your account, just has to be the same address).

  • +1

I tried 5 times today with online chat.
Optus would not give me further discount other than $31.5/30Gb plan even as a
20 years customer, 2 mobiles, home line and broadband.

    • How much do you think is a fair price?

  • Signed up for the $31.50 plan - managed to get an $18 credit out of the billing rep so effectively i'm not paying any extra than I am currently! :)

  • Via Live Chat, just recontacted out of the previous $40/30gb, with a few months to go, no fees. Even was able to haggle down the price and get 15% of $45/50gb.

    • How did you manage the 15%? Did you contract / recontact another service?

  • Signed up last night and this evening receive an email with the incorrect number to port … Web Chat operators were terrible and only after the third operator was able to confirm the order is 'fine' and 'please ignore that other email' … bit concerning to receive an email with someone else's number hmmmm #notconfident

  • +1

signed up a couple day ago with my plan 3 months to go. Received an email today and my plan transferred to new plan without penalty. $31.5 pm with 30GB with free optus sport and tv/movie streaming could not be happier

  • +1

At the end of OCT i ported and contracted to the BYO 12 month offer, I now see they increased the termination (before 28th Oct) from $144 to $210 after! And they want me to pay it before afreeing to recontract or change anything. That stinks! For a $2 sim they want $210… Oh but you agreed to it, well no I dint, I wasnt told until AFTER in the emailed pdf and I thought it was $144 (12 a month)

I can see why Optus loose people back to Telstra, becuase if im going to pay a termination fee anyway, Im going back to telstra

  • Tried to upgrade my services but apparently any existing customer that wants to break their existing sim-only plan to PAY MORE and STAY ON ANOTHER 12 MONTHS will need to pay $75. Sales rep acknowledge it…

    quote from live chat
"If you recontract, you need to pay the charges of $75.00 and move to new 12 months contract on $31.50 with 30GB data but if you change the plan, the contract term will remain same as no any offer or discount will apply."

    UPDATE: t
Spoke to Billing 24/7 chat and they did it without issues.
    quote from chat:

    please be rest assured.

In $35 SIM plan, you will get :
    10% discount
    Unlimited national call and text
300 intl minutes with unlimited text
    30 GB data
Optus sport, mobile TV streaming and music streaming free of cost
However, the contract confirmation display the original plan rates and inclusions. You will see the discount and offers once your bill will get generated.

I would also like to inform you that the contract is for next 12 months but the discount applied on the plan is valid for 24 months.
