Link is broken, for that price you can buy 3 paperwhites

    • Fixed!

Did consider that, but the 8 inch screen!

      • Looks like the kindle oasis

        • kindle oasis is somewhat crippled in Australia.

    • +1

I'd almost pay for 2 more paperwhites to have my physical buttons back :/

    • Kindle are expensive enough for what you get, but these seem extremely expensive.
What temperature can you get the warmer screen up to. Does it really make a difference to your hands?

  • +3

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago. It's definitely overpriced but it's amazing. Not circle jerking but it's basically the Android version of ereaders, actually, all kobo's are. Kindle's have such a gross closed system that's really anti-consumer.

    • How's your screen I've seen some complaints about a grey strip down one side.

      • +1

The screen is great, what you're going to find is that there's a slightly subtle visible blue (it's not even really blue, it's like a white strip with a blue tinge - hard to describe) strip down the side where the buttons are. Some people notice it and focus on it more than others, luckily for me it's not really a big issue. I would take a photo of it but it's actually hard to show, low brightness it's a non-issue but if you've got the brightness up you'll notice it.

        • For that price you wouldnt want anything like that tho

          • -1

@asa79: True but being first generation there's sure to be problems

        • So, it's a deliberate thing? Or a fault?

          • @JerryB: Hard to say. They may not have been able to figure out how to do the backlight with the larger screen. I'm sure revisions will rectify it.

And let me stress, it's really not that big of a deal or even that noticeable (non existent at low brightness). It sucks that it exists (I've read that some people don't have it - not sure if I should believe that or not) but I'm living with it

    • Calibre fixes that

      • Using third party apps to fix the issue of their system doesn't make it anymore useful. Calibre is great but it's a pain having to use it to "strip" the drm off any books you buy elsewhere.

    • +2

I've owned a couple of Kindles, never had issues with their system. Takes all of 7 seconds to convert an epub to a mobi file with Calibre. Easy.

      • +2

But it shouldn't exist, that's the point.

        • It may as well not exist. I've never looked at, or had to use it once.

          • +1

@Thefong: You've not had to use it but you say it takes all of 7 seconds to convert?

You mustn't buy ebooks from other stores then.

In any case, I don't want to argue, if Kindle works for you then I'm glad. For me I want a little more freedom.

            Cheers

            • @Kozhutki: how much cheaper are they are other stores? then amazon

        • There is multiple different mobi, epub, lit, pdf, txt, and a couple others i cant remember
just like different image formats, different music formats

    • Is it still e-ink?

      • Yup - Carta e-ink

        • God thats tempting.

My kobo h2o is still fine though.

          Gah! Damn you ozbargain.

          • @MasterScythe: Hey man, the h2o is fantastic, I'd only say get this if you have extra money that you can spend and you want to get something special for yourself. It's definitely priced pretty high but dunno, luxury item I suppose.

    • So are these full Android, just with a mono screen? Is there a crazy long battery life?

      • Sorry, they aren't Android I just mean that their OS allows for more 'customisation'. You can use a lot more book formats for example. There's also a little bit of a modding scene, I haven't really looked into it but I know it exists.

Also yeah, the battery lasts for ages, I've charged it once and it's at 56% and I've had it for a bit over 2 weeks now. I'm not reading hours upon hours every day but it's still lasting a pretty decent time. But this is pretty standard for e-ink displays, it's not a Forma only thing.

Is the price a typo 😳

    • No?

    • I hope not!

  • +4

I really hate how Amazon discontinued their 10" kindle DX years ago. At least another company sees some merit in large e-ink screens … but at the price there won't be much consumer interest.

    • Most people dont have an issue with the normal kindle size, its the same size as paperback books, and you can make the font big enough to see without glasses

      • +1

I have a paperwhite for novels. But I read a lot of e-magazines as well which don't scale down to 6".

        • get an ipad for magazines with rbdigital and colour screen

          • @asa79: I own android tablets with rbdigital. LCD is an eye strain after several hours, even with blue light disabled.

            • @lyl-Lychee: iPad are alot nicer on the eyes over the androids I have used

    • Yeah, I am still hoping to see the return of 14" and larger Android devices, hopefully with a stylus. It will obviously happen but it is a shame the way the manufacturers like Toshiba failed to sell to all countries and the crazy premiums they tried to gouge in the past.

  • I really want one of these I was hoping Myer was going to stock them as they did the aura's but I get the impression that maybe they are moving away from Kobo :(

So I'm unfamiliar with this sender are they reliable? I need the item before christmas

    • I hope so! Ordered one with hopes of doing the TRS thing this weekend so it better arrive before then.

    • Buying from Angus and Roberston would be a smidge cheaper but they indicate slightly slower delivery, decisions decisions

      • That would be without a case right?

        • My apologies I did not realise that the Presents10 code had a min value, I can apply it to AnRs reader but not the case

  • Looks good but can’t justify the price.

  • This is why Kindles are so much more popular. They don't even have to try to be that good - people will see the price difference and make their decision just like that.

Of course, there's some people that will think this is a great price for an e-reader.

  • +1

At that price I'd be thinking about the 10" Onyx Boox
    http://www.boox.com/products/

    • Wow I've never seen that product before. Looks fantastic, just wish it'd succeed commercially and normalise large e-ink devices.

    • Damn, a 13.3" ereader, that's crazy. They look pretty nice. Glad there's more competition these days with ereaders.

  • Thanks for posting we started with Sony readers in our family then moved to Kobos. I know the deal hasn't received many upvotes due to price but it's a discount of rrp that no one else is offering, I had some discounted ebay giftcards so very happy to now have this ereader on its way to me for xmas, they are a beautiful device ty

    • Glad you were able to decide whether or not to get it. Hope it's what you're after.
