How Is This Forum Different to Whirlpool?

I have been using this website for deals for years, but I have not used the forum area.

For years I have used WP, but I have found that I am getting less and less use out of it.

How is OZB forum different to WP ?

    Better layout and memes.
More users on Whirlpool though so more discussions.

    • +37

OzBargain's layout is about 20 years ahead of Whirlpool's.

      • +98

And it is orange, the colour of oranges.

        • +7

          Rangas rejoice!

@aussieprepper: Where the soul is absent so is jubilation.

          • @aussieprepper: Pretty sure Scotty is a Ranga (not that there's anything wrong with that)

            • +1

@matt3: Can confirm. Seen him a few times and he always wears the OzB orange top without fail.

            • @matt3: Genetically impossible?

          • +2

@aussieprepper: Only a ginger can call another ginger ginger! Better check yoself!

      • Too hard to change something a s big as Whirlpool

      • +3

        There's a layout here?

      • Also gets updated on a daily basis - whirlpool seems to be once every 7 days (on the news page anyway).

        • Plenty of Chinese sellers to pad out the deals.

      • +1

        What ain't broke, don't fix

      • Is ozbargain really at the bleeding edge of contemporary website design?

        • +1

No, so that says a lot about Whirlpool!

    • +3

WP for tech advice and Ozb for financial advice.

  • +30

OzB = Places for deals for everything you use in life. Visitors are more about value for money, no tech background required.

WP = Place to whinge about telcos and everything IT related. Population is more for those into IT/Tech

    • great, I am an addicted bargainer myself… recently been using less and less WP…

and this chart confirms that I am not different, it is WP's problem.

      https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=AU&q=%…

      • +1

That chart has nothing to do with how many users are using Whirlpool …

    • +12

And I'm not sure that WP has its own bikies.

      • And I'm not sure that WP has its own bikies.

        It has GUWPCT instead.

      • +1

It does have candy. Although not so much since they disabled polls. We all need polls. And Candy. Candy the stripper.

  • +41

I don't see a great difference between WP and OzBargain. Sizeable tossers on either side of the fence.

    • +2

is it fair to say that topics seems to be deal driven ?

  • +56

OzBargain forums caters more to the angry/bad driver demographic.

  • Lol you see huge spikes every decembet for ozb

    • +15

For newbies, Decembet is what us over here at Oz Bargain call the 12th month

  • +22

It's helpful for when you have questions to ask on behalf of friends.

  • +31

    Whirlpool permanently banned jv.

    • +9

Shows how unsophisticated, backward, safespaced that forum is!

      • safespaced that forum is!

If you can get access to "in the news", you can find some wide-ranging opinions.

    • +2

But do they have a Green Diji?

      • +2

        Dozens of them.

      • +1

        Yes
        aura: low

given Whirlpool forum is full of 'mini Dijis' its odd that the aura isnt pervasively bright or some other BS rofl

    • I don't think jv posts in these forums, only in the deals section. Feel free to prove me wrong.

  • +22

The differences can be easily explained with a Venn diagram drawn in MS Paint.

  • +1

The irony is that OzBargain could really use some of those an-al, nit-picking nerds but I think many of them would be too impatient to deal with the everyman 'round these parts.

e.g. you don't really see articles like this on OzBargain.

    • +2

e.g. you don't really see articles like this on OzBargain.

Similar wiki, Cards with No Overseas Transaction Fees

      • +1

Yeah, I was actually referring to the impressive list of country-specific ATM information and the overwhelming detail, but the Ozbargain wiki has done a good job of staying up-to-date with a range of cards specific to overseas purchases. Citibank cards are so 2016.

It's the detail that impresses me there, not the scope. Like there was a Belong article explaining the process of signing-up to take advantage of the bonus data etc. Finder is your innocent "what's a torrent" everyman information provider. Someone on Whirlpool will publish a JavaScript plugin to hack Dominoes. Like you said, our forum focus is on getting out of fines. I almost only use OzBargain.

    • I feel like OZB likes a joke more than WP. Joke submissions get hundreds of comments very quickly, or joke baiting submissions do anyway. I can't remember the last time I visited WP either.

  • +1

Whirlpool has more members who just copy and paste Googled answers whenever a question is posted and many are either Trolls, IT Gurus on $250k a year, or Bush Lawyers.

    • yeah, most of the mods in WP seems to be those IT gurus too… they are getting crankier and crankier recently, banning posters more and more, may be because more of these "high paying" jobs are getting outsourced.

  • +15

    More inside jokes.
Investment cars, eneloops, and bikies to name a few.

    • Not to mention discussions on HN Professionalism and 80k high yield investment cars ;)

      • +8

A good example is the recent topic about the poor bloke who's speaker got stolen while camping. So when a deal popped up for that exact speaker model, I went in to make a joke and someone had already beaten me to it!

    • Eneloops are passé now; no more Dick, no more Eneloops.

      • +6

In some instances no more dick would mean more eneloops

  • +29

    Ozbargain has better mods.

    • +39

Congratulations, you've been promoted to power user.

    • +7

      Kiss arse

    • They can't be that good if they've still got jv on the loose.

      • +3

JV is the Thanos of OzB.

  • +2

    Same same, but different.

      • +1

At least they take responsibility when they drive into a wall. Oh wait… they don’t.

But you still can’t beat entitled coffee lady.

It's a shame for that OP that tinypic lets anyone change photo tags.

    Bargains

  • On OzBargain you are asking for help for a friend

  • +2

Do you remember the first time you watch TV in monochrome and then you watch a colour TV

That is Ozbargain compared to whirlpool forum visually.

    • WP has utterly stupid amount of white space, the text are condensed into a small part in the middle
      and …
      no option to disable ads
Thus WP will never be in the same league as OzB, not in a million years
Also, the developers/site maintainer there DGAF about making the site user friendly and efficient
sif need to use user-made greasemonkey script just to make the browsing experience palatable

      • in other words, fail to adapt to the changing environment ?

but WP forum contents are google searchable, but not for OZB forums ?
        is this true ?

        • ozb forum and deal pages definitely appear in google results

          • @payton: I did a quick google search for Speeding fine [ozbargain / whirlpool], what I can see is the results in google for WP is grouped, however not for ozbargain…

            why ?

          • @payton: I see my own posts a lot, but I wonder if only I see them because google knows that they are mine somehow. or maybe the problems I search for are worded very specifically.

      • +2

        "no option to disable ads"

I've never seen an ad on Whirlpool and Ghostery and Privacy badger report no blocked items. The text fills the screen in the same way that a text based forum has since Timed/FidoNet/UseNet. Are you sure you are using the same Whirlpool fora the rest of us are?
I'm not trying to have a dig, just a bit worried that your browser is compromised…

        https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/wp_ncadvertising

        https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/wp_advertising

        • no probs
I use WP mostly to research PC parts or opinions
the number of posts/comments displayable "per page" there is deliberately set low, resulting in popular threads going 120+ pages long

So I use WP's archive view so I can just word-search the entire mega thread.
WP displays ads for pages viewed this way, for example this one

          • @payton: Ah, I don't use that one much. It's using Google adsense according to Ghostery [which explains why I still didn't see the ad]

  • +2

Not much difference. It's easy to create ghost accounts on both sites.

    • come on, we are not kids anymore, save your effort for something else.

if you hate certain web sites, just take note of the founder / owner etc and never invest / have any business dealings / buy from them.

I definitely remember the founder and owner of WP now and if they do a startup….

    • +1

if its easy to keep ghost accounts here, there won't be so many "asking for a friend" original posts, they'd all appear under 0-day new usernames

    • +17

What's the name of the ghost account? Asking for a friend.

      • I think System is a ghost account.

  • +4

Ozbargainers are smarter, richer and better looking. Just ask them.

    • +4

      You obviously haven't met JV.

    • +4

Minimum salary to post on Whirlpool is about $250k going by the salary related threads, what's OzBargain then? 300k?

  • +14

Whirlpool is excessively moderated and enforces extreme political correctness. For example, don't try intelligently discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on WP, it's not allowed. (At least last time I was there.)

    • -6

agreed, the mods there feels good by enforcing rules and deleting others' posts because they don't like it. no wonder WP is dying, check the google stats.

ending up WP is just a "free" forum enforcing the rules of the mod - sad.

I have a feeling some of the mods there are just the IT support guys at the office. They all lie to each other about how much they earn, and probably their bosses are working on outsourcing their jobs to India because they know they spend most of their work time deleting posts on WP.

ausfrequentflyer are people in higher places, some status snob (me being one of them).. WP mods are just IT / people in uni getting satisfaction for their lives by deleting post - hence I ask them to remove my account.

OZB - just people always want more of everything !

    • +1

This. They cater massively toward making a safe space for first time users with no common sense. I got perma-banned even though my aura was pervasively light, and had a lot of posts helping a lot of people. If you aren't left leaning and like to comment, that's a banning. I've noticed a lot of long-time contributors in the penalty box permanently lately. They are going to end up with a bunch of one post wonders and noone to answer them.

This forum is threaded; modern. It's also meaner. You can vote on people's opinions.

Easier for those who can't construct a meaningful reply.
