  • was just looking at this over the weekend, thank you!

  • Thanks OP.

Needed one for a Kris Kringle.

  • +1

How does this model differ from Gen 1 & 2 Chromecasts?

    • according to the ebay reviews, better wifi and much needed improvement overall

    • Feature-wise, this one can do 60fps YouTube playback. That's about the only noticeable addition.

      • Do you know if the Chromecast Ultra also does 60fps Youtube (1080p and or 4k)? Couldn't find it on Wikpedia.

        • The ultra can do both 1080p@60Hz and 4K@60Hz.

    • 20% faster than Chromecast 2.

      4K compatible.

      • +5

Not 4k compatible - you still need the Ultra for that

  • Thanks :)

  • Chromecast 3 or Vodafone TV. know needs to shell out 30 bucks more but is it worth?

    • +3

buying Vodafone TV today, has remote, can be used as TV, also play games. and i heard i can block youtube ads with side load of ABP

      • +2

Not all things cast well to VTV, as I found it over the weekend.

E.g., Optus Sports app stutters casting Video On Demand, but the Live stream was fine.

The VTV definitely does more, but if all you want to do is cast, grab the Chromecast

        • lucky i'm not sports Fan :p

          • @hopper: I understand that, sure, but this was more an indictment on casting to the Vodafone TV. You can cast 4k (if you have a 4k TV of course) but casting is more problematic and inconsistent compared to the Google Chromecast.

The Vodafone TV does have a sweet remote with huge Netflix and Youtube buttons that is both IR and Bluetooth, and you can command it with your Google Assistant (even on your phone if you don't have a Google Home). The remote also has a microphone on it so you can voice search instead of trying to type.

So, you can decide whether you only will cast to it - in which case you buy the Chromecast - or if you want a cheap and cheerful almost stock Android TV box that's likely to be stuck on Android 7 forever.

Be aware that although it has a TV tuner in it, you only get information for the next two programs, and not a 7 day EPG (why?????)

            • @Droz: Cool, yeah less cast and more browsing. đź‘Ť

      • From where?

      • Also has ethernet and does 4K. I'd say it's even better value than a Chromecast Ultra.

  • Is this a good price? It lets you do stuff from your ipad, phone, etc right?

    • +1

Normally about $50, so yes it is a good price.

    • With iOS, each individual app needs to support Chromecast.

  • im also interested how it differs from earlier models im assuming this is the latest?

    • +3

Model comparison just scroll down on the wiki page

thanks mate. Ill purchase. no huge changes to my other one but for the price it doesnt hurt

      • Look. Under hardware and design.

  • +1

$30 more dollars for the ultra

  • Is this the chromecast that Kayo recommends using? "Chromecast Ultra and 3rd Generation" - https://help.kayosports.com.au/s/article/How-do-I-Chromecast…

    • Yes it is.

  • Don't forget that the Chromecast 3 won't do 4K, you need the Ultra for that.

Now if only the Chromecast Audio would get reduced too!

Edit: I see a couple of people have already posted comparisons above

    • The audio did get reduced

      • I have two Chromecast 2 device, one was given to me recently, I use it with my amplifier to cast music from my phone, now is the quality the same as, if I was using the Chromecast Audio device?

        • Chromecast Audio is just a Chromecast that has a 3.5mm jack instead of a HDMI port.

          • @Droz: Thanks, I know that, but what I mean, the quality of the audio would it be the same for both?

    • Google has the Chromecast Audio for $49 delivered.
Officeworks also price beat Google, bringing the Chromecast Audio down to $46.55 (in-store pick up), if you have an Officeworks nearby instead.

      • Yep, I saw that. Or using the 20% code here for TGG and in-store pickup brings it to virtually the same price.

        • Argh dammit its says my local GG is out of stock

Edit: it gets better. The ebay store says my local is out of stock. But the main GG site claims they do have stock. So I rang them, and they do indeed have stock. But they refused to honour the ebay 20% deal, even though it would be exactly the same if I used click-and-collect and in fact would require slightly less work on their end!

  • +4

Currently $49 with free delivery from Google store.

    https://tinyurl.com/y746gow8

A fraction cheaper than this deal (if you can't click and collect).

  • Funny, I was on their ebay site this morning and searched for Chromecast and only came up with the Ultra and Audio models!

    • Same Here :-) …. Just bought one now….Happy Days!

  • The golden question - can the chromecast 3 get past the login screen when using it in hotel WiFi?

  • Chromecast Ultra comes down to $81.26 with the same promo code - decent price.

  • Google store sells for $45 + Free Delivery

    • +1

Is there a code or something for $45?

I can only see it at $49, down from $59.

  • Now showing as "This code can't be applied to your order".

  • -1

    Can it run crysis

  • Ok so mine arrived very fast and worked well. Had to change some settings on it initially, but it ended up really quite decent. Wifi network was obviously a bit busy, since GFs iphone 8 had to download netflix at high resolution as possible (over wifi) then beam it back over wifi to the CCast.

That being said it was reasonably decent quality.

NOW I can use the PS4 remotely in the study, while she uses Netflix! Witcher 3 coming soon!

That's not how streaming cast apps work, the phone just tells the Chromecast what to play and it pulls directly from the internet. The only inter-device traffic during playback is the Chromecast telling the phone where it's up to, and the phone sending any commands like seeking or volume adjustment.

  • Thanks! Just ordered the Ultra for $71.20 saving me $17.80

  • The price has gone up to $52.25 now, surely that cant be right.
