[NSW] Air Conditioner Rebates @ NSW Government

620

Was on 7 News last night towards the end.

What’s available?

For a limited time, the NSW Government is offering households a discount on installing an air conditioner with a high star rating.

What discount can I get?

The installation discount will depend on the size of your air conditioner.

AC size Energy Rating Cooling / heating space Discount
2.5 kW - 5.5✩ and above - Small bedroom or study - $200
3.5 kW - 5.5✩ and above - Medium to large bedroom, small lounge - $200
5 kW - 4✩ and above - Lounge or living room - $500
10 kW - 3.5✩ and above - Large open plan areas - $1000

Many brands have air conditioners that are eligible for the discount. An approved installer will confirm if the unit you need qualifies for the discount.

Thanks OP. There's no installers in my area. There's a form I filled out to be notified when installers are available in the area.

The only issue I see is that the discount may not be that good, as the installer provides the prices. So it's not like I can go and find the cheapest price for that model and get the installer to put it in before getting a rebate. The price is worked in to the overall cost.

    • +2

I guess you could get quotes from other installers and compare.

      • Yep, that's what I'm suggesting

  • +26

Seems like an easy scam for installers

    • +6

so the installers will just jack the prices….

      • +3

Yeah exactly. These schemes are all the same. Government gives some discount so the sellers jack up the price and make more money than from someone else without the discount, so we wind up paying more not less. It should be we can buy anywhere - or at least from one of several stores like Betta, Good Guys, etc. - and have to provide a receipt gov. can verify with those stores.

    • When the 10k interest free loan on solar installs and extra rebate on battery storage came in recently, the quotes I previously for my house had magically increased dramatically when I reapplied.

What matters overall seems to be that the govt is seen to do the right thing, regardless who it benefits.

  • whats the typical cost to install an air con? say 10kw for large living area? mine is getting a bit old but still works fine…thinking maybe a good idea to take advantage of this.

    • +1

I paid $1000 for two splits. This was using airtasker.

There's only two authorised installers in my area. They probably would charge more.

      • +1

yep, smells like insulation or solar all over again….

  • +3

Gee they're aiming pretty low with the star ratings. 4 star for 5kw? Never mind. I was dreaming.

I agree with heal, only two installers in the entire Sydney area indicates poor take up by installers. I bought 3 air cons during the recent eBay 10% off and my installer was blowing up at his supplier asking why customers could buy units cheaper than he could, and he was a high volume installer.

Anyway 1 x 2.6Kw and 2 x 5.2Kw installed for $4100 (that included what I paid for the units). 6 star and 4.5 star rated units with 6 year warranty. I'd be interested to see what people taking this offer up get quoted for the units installed.

    Editted.

    • What models did you end up with?

  • +13

In Queensland we got the discount on the purchase of an AC, rather than the installation. Much easier.

    • +3

Yeap I got my Kelvinator 2.5KW $700 down to $150 after rebates, cash back and GG ebay 20% off :)

      • Me too. Still sitting under my house not installed yet….

    • +3

that would make so much more sense… alleviates any price fixing issues by the suppliers.

      NSW government fail again…

  • +7

Pork barrelling before an election or am I being a tad too cynical?

    • I don't agree. The NSW economy is going great and the government have been doing a lot of rebates for years, with new ones coming out regularly. Green slip refund, free travel on toll roads after a certain spend, creative kids and active kids vouchers, etc.

Unfortunately, I'm not in Newcastle Sydney Wollongong but in rural NSW. Still no installers in my area for LED downlights (same sort of program as this). I replaced my hallogens 14 months ago.

      • +1

Unfortunately, I'm not in Newcastle Sydney Wollongong

Ummm, Newcastle doesn't even have any installers. None for Gosford either.

        • +3

It's a bit of a joke for as long as I can remember that NSW stands for Newcastle Sydney Wollongong, as that's where state funds get spent.

          • @heal: I think it's more apt to say North and Sydney West - now that's where all the funding goes!

        • Well what do you expect!? Gov. has to do something to make sure hardly anyone can actually take advantage of the offer.

          • @GregMonarch: I think it's more to do with pleasing the masses. Sydney has the most amount of people to win over in the least area.

Just keep upgrading Sydney and you'll get votes behind you.

  • +1

Anyone know if this is retrospective? I cannot see any further details on the site.

    • +2

** Thinking of this as well as I just got central put in about 3 months

Edit. Be an approved installer — I entered several Post codes and they come up with the below LOL.

By submitting 'Find approved installers', you are agreeing to the terms of service.

      There are 2 approved suppliers.
      Air Conditioning Guys (ACG)
      Air DJH

  • +3

I guess this is better than another high-speed rail feasibility study.

I think that's how they announce elections now.

    • Whoever can tap into a fast rail link for Newcastle and Wollongong and actually deliver will win the election and keep in power.

So that's why everyone is saying that they'll do it to try and win over the people who don't realise it's just all talk.

      • They don't have to deliver - ask Bob Carr he used this trick a number of times, then again I guess we wont be fooled again will we?

        • then again I guess we wont be fooled again will we?

Exactly. We shouldn't be but people still are.

  • None in Newcastle

  • Couldn't find a single regional/rural based installer after trying postcodes for Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst and surrounds. Let alone for people based near small rural towns who will have no hope of qualifying for this scheme (which is advertised as being available for a "limited time only"). What a useless pork-barrelling rort which is no doubt designed (very poorly it seems) to show they are addressing some sort of green energy target. How about a simple rebate off the purchase price?

  • Every aircon i see 2.5kw has 5 star rating and offer is for 5.5 star rating . I hope i am not misunderstanding.

    • I work in a Harvey's and have had customers coming in all day looking for rebate units. We had a look and none at that* efficient. They miss out by half a star (Fujitsu, pana, etc etc). Weird

  • Bah, I installed a ducted system upstairs and 2 split systems downstairs like half a year ago…. :(

  • +2

Called both ACG and DJH. They only supply and install for the rebate to work and they only supply Daikin. Their minimum charge to supply and install is $2600. DJH is in Caringbah and they dont travel to Western Sydney (I live in Blacktown). Meh!!

    • +2

geez, I only need one in a bedroom, can get it for $800 and comes with wifi, man can the government (profanity) things up even more with these rebates

    • I didn't see this till too late as I just bought a 5 star Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 2.5Kw inverter system from Bunnings for $754 and got it installed via Airtasker for $550. Still very happy with the price and product (I have two other MHI inverter split systems which cost very little to run - using dry mode is often enough to take the humidity and a lot of the heat out of a room).

  • Pretty sure you could get it cheaper elsewhere even with the rebate. I'm getting a 14kW ducted system (8 outlets and 2 zones) for $8k installed.

    • What? Man, i got Mates rates and i think i got ripped off!!!, I got a mitsubishi 10kW ducted system with 4 outlets and 2 zones for i think 7k or a bit less….Cash in hand. And they didnt put in the extra accessory which has wifi abilities.

      • Just because you didn't get a killer deal doesn't mean you got ripped off. Chill.

    • good to know. single or 3 phase ?
anywhere around sydney suburbs ?.. I am looking to get something similar.

  • +1

I found buying the aircon separately and getting an aircon guy to do a cash job worked in my favour.
Cost me 400 for the install and the official quote was 700.

    • Do you mind to share your installer contact details? Thank you.

      • Where are you located?

  • -4

Awesome! I love it when my government burdens my future children with $700 of debt to run a program that gives me $200 back on my Air Con.

  • A rebate to reduce energy usage by installing more air conditioners. That's some politician thinking right there.

  • I'm guessing not for porta air conditioning

  • +1

so the installers will just jack the prices….

  • +1

    useless

  • +2

Absolute waste of tax payer dollars.

Honestly why they'd piss away money on this is beyond me - as its ALREADY in the best interests of buyers to get a system that uses less power - as the various Govts have allowed power co's to rort the system and charge crazy prices - so why toss extra money after the problem? If people want to buy an inefficient system and use it heaps, they'll get larger bills.

Completely moronic and inefficient use of funds.

  • Entered my post code on the website, listed 2 companies "servicing my area".
    Contacted both.

    First reply:

"Unfortunately we do not travel as far as your suburb. We are based in Caringbah.
    Sorry I could not help."

  • +1

    Duopoly! Good job NSW.

  • I checked and Frost Air conditioning not on the list for certified installers.

  • Just a dumb question guys - Do we need prior approval from Strata before Aircon (Split system) can be installed in the Units (My first home in this case)?

    • +1

Depends on strata but usually yes if there is something sticking out of the exterior of your unit.

    • Every strata place I've rented the owner couldn't even paint the INTERIOR or change light fittings without permission. It's like government - ever-increasing control for the sole purpose of controlling others. I don't understand why anyone would buy strata titled. You pay about the same or more for the property, then have to pay strata fees forevermore, deal with control freak neighbours, and if its a couple they'll have to resell if they want their kid to have a yard instead of growing roots in front of a screen. If their reason is to not mow a lawn - pour concrete, roundup, or petrol on the grass and light it every 6 months.

  • +1

Just had a quote for NSW. They didn't include a machine that was eligible for the government rebate, nor was one offered. Useless government giving these two free advertising.

    • +1

From which contractor may I know?
Actually I recently asked ACG for quote and they even didn’t care about that job at all! The guy attended but said sorry can’t help you almost immediately. Ridiculous!
I guess they just have enough easy money because of this stupid advertising.

      • ACG

        • So yet again, another chook raffle the gov. couldn't get right.

  • +2

Massively overpriced "approved sellers". See this:

Approved seller = $8999 including install (7999 after rebate)
First google search = $4792 without install. Pretty sure install doesnt cost 4.2k….

  • Yeah I think it is portable air conditioners for me.
