The EF 50mm F1.8 STM excels at portraiture, low-light photography, and adding an artistic edge to everyday objects and settings, thanks to its wide F1.8 maximum aperture and 50mm focal length.

Wide F1.8 Aperture
It's easy to capture superb portraits, or bold, artistic photos and movies with the EF 50mm F1.8 ATM - the wide F1.8 maximum aperture provides precise control over depth of field. Additionally, this wide aperture lets more light into the lens, so you can comfortably shoot in darker conditions.

Stepping Motor Technology (STM)
The EF 50mm F1.8 STM features stepping motot technology which delivers fast, smooth, and near silent autofocus capability. This is particularly beneficial when shooting movies or shooting in live view mode.

Compact, Lightweight and Affordable
The EF 50mm F1.8 STM has a compact and lightweight design, weighing a mere 160g, and easily slips into your bag adding very little to the overall weight of your kit. The lens's new design compliments Canon's spectrum, of EOS DSLRs, while the new metal mount provides a more robust connection to camerabodies.

  • Even on a crop sensor I find 50mm is not long enough for portraits. 50mm is kind of in no man's land.

Not long enough? On a crop sensor it's 80mm. I find it a little too long if anything but it's good for head shot portraits. For the price, the nifty fifty is excellent value for money, even on a crop sensor, it's still my most used lens.
