These types of laptops are often under (or around) $300 though?

    • 2in1 touchscreens? I must have missed them. They do occasionally come up. Last was Lenovo a few months back.
Perhaps you are referring to the models that have 32gb storage? They can be a pain because windows uses most of that and you have to plug in a USB just to perform updates.

      • 32GB and windows is a REAL pain for updates unless you know what you are doing and store the update on external storage, 64GB is fine.

        • 64GB is fine.

If you have nothing else installed, sure.

  • Thanks OP great price. Do Hardly Normal sell them? I couldn’t find this model on their website.

Different model number but similar specs. Officeworks has the same.
I successfully price matched a phone on HN live chat so I could use the Amex offer.

      • Tried matching it online but HN declined straightaway

        • Yeah it's luck of the draw stuff with them. It's always worth a try though. Amazon had it for 314.99 yesterday but it's gone back up

  • please never ever buy entry level laptops. go to Renewd, and you can fetch an i5 laptop for $400.

looks like someone smart enough has already bought the ones I noticed yesterday :) watch Renewd, always filter by condition = excellent, and good deals come up every other day! I bought 2 machines from them, as new, and was extremely happy.

    • What/who is "Renewd?" Can you give more information please.

I get what your advising here, but there is a place for thin/light low cost laptops although slow have decent battery life.

      • There's a market who will buy slow AF laptops with next to no storage. Sadly.

Most of the time these people don't know what they are getting themselves into. Me included. It can't be that bad - yes it can and yes it is.

        • True. Some of these units are slower than most people hope for and are painful to use, especially if only 32GB storage. I find the minimum for entry level basic computing ( checking emails and light web browsing ) is a Quad Core with a passmark score of 1800-2000 such as the Intel N3710/N3450/N4200 etc ( Chromebooks can work with bit less ).

Even then doing windows updates can be really slow and frustrating, but OK as a second/travelling laptop.

      • yep, some people use mainly their phone for content consumption, and just need a laptop with browser for doing things at home on the dinning table, eg compose emails, write a resume, do tax, etc.

I'm not a fan of these though and sold my 64GB notebook within 2 weeks of owning one and bought entry level Acer I5 with 8GB ram for $550 instead. Later added cheap SSD. If you need FHD you can add external monitor.

        • Get an Acer Spin 3, 5 or 7 (budget depending) - FHD, SSD, Long Battery Life and up to i7 and 16GB RAM.
          (Model I have is Spin 3 - 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, i3 8th Gen)

@pennypincher98: Those specs are going to look like standard laptop specs which means standard laptop pricing.

            • @lostn: What is standard laptop pricing to you? Was around $620 (using 12% off gift card) which I thought was very fair. Is more than twice as good.

You can go renewd to save even more money getting a refurb if you want.

              • +1

                @pennypincher98: $620 for i7, 16GB RAM and 256/512GB SSD?

                Where can I get one?

Standard laptop 2-in-1 pricing to me with those specs is above $1000.

Spin 5 is $1198 at HN

                Spin 7 $1453 at Amazon.

When you get specs that are practical, the price is no longer attractive, unless you're buying refurbs or used.

                • @lostn:

                  Model I have is Spin 3 - 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, i3 8th Gen (FHD)

Btw at JB those specs were selling for $949 (12% off gift cards would make it $835.12

And Spin 5 was $684 at Bing Lee and $650 or so on Amazon.

Just look at the model because some seem to have less favourable reviews. Mine is going great though at the moment!

      • I was a user of those for quite a while, and the advice is from personal experience. avoid at all costs.

    • Same with cars.
I never understood why someone would buy a crappy $18k car, when you could get a really nice 3yo car, in top condition, for the same money.

There are plenty of nice ex lease 2in1s. Lenovo yoga, Ms Surface even.

      • "a crappy 18K car" haha,…that's funny. I am 50 yrs. of age, travelled all around Australia ( from Victoria to Cairns/Sunshine Coast many times like double figures ) in various cars over the years and None were worth over 18K, and I always made it back without too many hassles.

I can imagine you can of course get a "really nice 3yo car" for 18K or less, but if you have some car know how, you can have reliable/fun transport/experiences for a Lot Less.

Same goes with computers. Faster is not always better. You enjoy what you can afford.

Sorry I was not clearer. I just mean the cheapest new cars compare very poorly in value to a used car of similar price. Better to buy used than the cheapest new. Same as for laptops.
And I just checked new car prices: my $18k seems to be very outdated. Change that to a $14k Fiesta. 😊

          • @bargaino: All good. I went back to re-read your comment after my reply and understood that's what you meant, so we are sort of on the same page. Just my page is a lot older/cheaper than yours, but hopefully still a goody lol.

Merry Christmas to you and your family :-)

If it's a 2 in 1 touch screen, can we assume it's IPS?

Version with FHD here for $398.

    • That model was linked above already. FHD screen ( does not always mean a Better Quality Screen in Total ), but slower CPU.

I fully agree with your analogy of what defines a normal/bargain price for spec. Too many people on here think that unless you can purchase something for the absolute lowest price or close to, you have paid way too much and got ripped off.

Most people just go and buy something within their budget hopefully on sale/perceived sale/reduction and go home and hope it serves their needs. Most people unlike some of us here, will not spend hours researching and/or reading blogs before they make a purchase.
