Abus Rock 83/80 Padlock. $124.80 Delivered @ Sydney Central Locksmiths eBay

640
PINEAPPLE

Was searching around for a padlock for a friends motorbike and came across this boat anchor.

Let me introduce you to the Abus 83/80 Rock padlock…

This is a massive padlock. And I mean "massive". I have a few for my locking up stuff and we use them at work on containers and whatnot. These are security padlocks and can be rekeyed to suit your application with the change of a 570 cylinder.

If you have a motorcycle, jetski or anything else of value you lock down to your garage floor, Get one of these. If you want to hang it from a chain and flail people with it, it would work a treat. Would look super tough on your American "Staffordshire" terrier's 3" wide studded collar. Never want to lose your keys? This would make a nice key ring…

At this price, considering the weight of this thing to post, we cannot even buy them at this price through work. This is cheap. I'm happy to get negged with "cheaper elsewhere" because I would like to know where I can get them for less than this.

So, get on it. I think this eBay code ends tonight. Have a screen shot showing that it is currently working, but for how much longer, I don’t know.

For anyone curious at just how big these are, here is a photo. (Sorry, no bananas for scale)
YouTube picking video of this lock to give you an idea of what it is all about. (Thanks for Skitzout for the link.)

Price comparison;

$184 @ Locks Galore (+ postage??)
$191 @ DrLock (+ postage??)
$156 @ SCL Keeler (free postage)

Good sales pitch. Never dreamed a padlock could cost so much.

    • +4

They do when they get up around this size. I just weighed it and it comes in at 1,370 grams. The standard Lockwood in the photo above is 378 grams…

      • +9

        1.37kg. WTF

        • +1

I told you it was a big (fropanity) lock… :D

          • +3

@pegaxs: My wife uses a transparent version of this on her cooch. Works like a charm (for her).

            • +1

@cnut: I got the same issue… and my lock pick is waaaaay to big.

    • +5

      It's an iPadlock.

  • +3

You're real keen on your locks hey mate

    • +16

I sleep with one of these under my pillow at night. :D

      • You have them at work… and you also have some at home.
Did you buy the home ones with your own$$$ ?

        • +2

Yes, paid for them myself. The ones for home are not on a restricted key system, so i couldn’t buy those, but i did use works discount. I can tell you, I paid closer to $180 each for mine about two years ago.

  • +13

    Thanks Op, bought 10.

  • +5

I was sceptical but then i watched this and wow pretty intense lock. But i guess if u have a need $124.80 is quite cheap

Surprised how quickly he picked it though!

      • It even surprised him. He did admit to having 3 or 4 unlocks before he started the camera. The "series 83" cylinder that is in that lock is pretty weak at best, but even I am impressed when he gutted it and poured out all those spool pins…

But then again, he is a guy that spends a lot of time just picking locks, so his skill level would be maxed compared to mine.

I do like his destructive "Ramset gun ALL THE THINGS!!!" videos.

      • I watch a lot of that guy's videos and he's a seriously talented lockpicker, probably one of the best on YouTube at the moment. If the lock is able to resist low skill attacks like raking, combing, bypassing, etc. then I'd wager you'd never see it picked in the real world. If it was vulnerable to these things then he would've mentioned it too.

  • +3

Maybe if I had one of these for my Eneloops my daughter wouldn't have pillaged them recently.

    • +3

      There goes her inheritance:/

      • +1

        That's right. She's been notified

  • Would they be easy to cut open with a bolt cutter?.

    • +6

I would say, almost, if not, impossible. The shackle is 15mm hardened alloy. We have some big bolt cutters at work, and these dont even fit into the opening.

Here is a video on YouTube of a guy trying it… :D

    • A portable grinder would be easier and probably cheaper than a bolt cutters.

You don't need to cut shackle either, whatever the shackle is connected to is probably weaker and easier to cut.

  • +2

i don’t get it. you compared the size of the lock with other locks in the photo you took. for people not that much into lock dimensions would it have been wiser to put a 20c piece next to the lock for comparison? just sayin’.

    • +17

      Can do! :D

Here is a photo compared to a regular lock, a AA Eneloop (OzB Approved) and a travel padlock. :D

      • +2

        and a travel padlock. :D

The 83/80 is my travel padlock!

      • thanks boss

If you are worried about your lock getting picked then look out for this next year sometime https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2136537678/bowley-lock-…

    • +3

Don’t like it. Looks like it could bend/break or get hooked on clothing, etc. Looks like a garbage design. The USB of keys. put it in, wont fit, flip it over, wont fit, flip it again, now it goes in. Too much messing about. Insert, turn, push, turn again…

      If I was going for lock picking protection, I would use something like;

      Assa Abloy Protec 2
      Lockwood Twin
      BiLock Exclusive or Galaxy
      Mul-t-loc MT5 or Interactive

The list goes on, but you get the point.

      • I saw a video of someone testing the keys for bendability etc and just won't happen easily - the lock picking lawyer actually addresses this in his review, and then tested for hooking on things and again won't happen easily. He also seems to pick which way the key goes without a problem as one side is thicker and on the production version this may have an indicator.

    • +1

The only people to lose from an unpickable lock are the owners that lose their keys. Thieves aren't going to spend ten or twenty minutes picking a lock.

      • Yep. I would look at that lock, go back to the truck and get the battery angle grinder.

    • Someone probably said the same thing about the TappLock.

  • +22

+1 because you compared its size with an eneloop.

I'm trying to get a new meme started for 2019. ;)

      • +4

        "Eneloop for scale"

  • +4

Just wanted to say I highly recommend this company. I have sent them keys before on a few ebay purchases and they coded the locks to the keys for free. Great service and so much cheaper than I could get locally here in the West.

    • +1

Yep, can confirm. Every dealing I have had with them through work has always been super professional. Happy that they are part of these 20% eBay deals. Know I'll be buying some more stuff off them next time.

  • So these are better than the legendary Lockwood?

    • Biggest padlock Lockwood make is a 70mm. This padlock is 80mm. 14mm Lockwood shackle vs 15mm on the Abus.

And a lock is only as good as it's weakest point.

      • What's the point if it gets picked so quickly? Sure, the guy is very skilled at it, but still…

  • +1

We're gonna need a bigger boat. Or jet ski.

  • +1

I'd have to buy something expensive to make it worthy of this beast

    • +5

"Well, you see, honey, I had to buy the new motorcycle… It just seemed a shame to waste this lock…"

  • With prices like this people will probably take the whole padlock and leave the bike lol…

    • +4

Would be lighter and easier to take the bike… :D

Ironically, at this price… this lock is a steal…

  • Thanks, anniversary gift for the misses, now sorted
keep her in the Kitchen, jks

  • +1

A $50 angle grinder will cut through this in no time. Just saying

    • +6

It would be kinda noisy though. Just said something.

    • +4

We have much more expensive angle grinders at work, and I can assure you, after having to cut one of these off, it is very loud and takes more time than you think it does.

      Just sayin’

    • +2

With this lock on, you'd cut the chain or spoke?

btw, would 5 packs of these chained together a cheaper buy @$75? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/419992

  • Any recommendations for a lock to put on a Kennards Storage type storage?

    • This lock would be overkill and I don’t even know if it would fit.

For something like that I would get a padlock with a concealed shackle.

Or a monoblock type padlock (this may not fit either. Check how the lock on the storage door works.)

These locks are usually a bit more expensive than a cheap Masterlock, but for good reason. They offer a lot more protection and can be re-keyed to have the same key as your house. And stick with well respected brands, Lockwood, Abus, Assa Abloy.

  • Where are locking these on the bikes? If chains, looks like there's better chance to attack the chain than the lock itself.

    • I use it to lock 3 bikes to a garage anchor. What I use is a wire rope type thing to secure them all together.

I also have some really really heavy duty chain if I’m just chaining one of them down. But yes, I would attack the chain before I attacked this lock.
