1/2 Price Golden Sunset Canola Oil and Sunflower Oil 4 Litres Bottle $9 @ Coles

140

I saw this deal while I was shopping in Coles Morley WA store.
I think it's nationwide price and it's a great deal for 4 litres bottle for $9, half of its original price.

Both types of oil are good for light frying and for salad and a great alternative to Olive Oil.

    Woolworths canola oil 2L is $4.40 everyday. That's $8.80 for 4L.

Different Quality of Refining. Take a look at the colour of the oil.

I'm going to get downvotes for this, but what the heck, it needs to be said.

If you look at the process of extracting it, you'll know the intermediary seed oil is really dark before refinement.

I'm sure it's still safe to use, but that refining process is what makes the oil safe.

  • Hi OP, thanks for the deal, just curious which oil is the healthiest to deep/shallow fry food?

    • Deep frying I'd almost say it doesn't matter - it's not the healthiest of pursuits. That being said canola is probably the best choice - you want to minimize saturated fats and more so transfats and canola is best here in this harvard article with a table of oils. Shallow I use olive oil, but I like the flavors it imparts on the food - curiously olive and "vegetable oil" are missing from the above table, but for vegetable I guess you could calculate it's fat makeup from it's constituents.

Tldr - canola for deep, olive for shallow (I'm not a doctor if you get heart disease you're on your own lol)

Canola is certainly the unhealthiest of all.. Use grapeseeed, peanut or Olive Oil instead.

      • yep put it in your chainsaw

You can't really use Olive Oil to deep fry because it has a low smoking point. All 3 types of oils are high in monounsaturated fats (good fats) and sunflower oil contains the highest of all. I don't deep fry anything anymore for many years but if you must use sunflower oil or Canola. Sunflower oil is the 2nd healthiest option and it has a high smoking point. Grapeseed oil is just way too expensive to be used for deep frying.

I use air fryer for everything for several years now including for chips, nuggets etc and if you want a bit more tase I usually brush/drizzle on a bit on oil. I know it's not the same but it's probably the healthiest option.

I would stay away from vegetable oil and it usually blends of palm oil and it has high saturated fats and palm oil has a huge ecological footprint and bad for your health.

      • Great point OP, last time I tried air fryer at friend's place I noticed it was too dry, so next time I should add bit more oil onto the food otherwise it dries so quickly.

  • I run my car off this stuff once I've used it. Saves paying fuel excise tax for my diesel.

    • Do you run a fish and chip shop?

      • No, I just get all their used oil

Your exhaust will smell like fish and chips.

These oils can be found at half price almost every month at either Woolies or Coles.

    "great alternative to Olive Oil"?
These refined polyunsaturated seed/"vegetable" oils are toxic and even worse when cooked with (regardless of the smoke point).
Stick to Olive Oil, or better yet animal fats such as Lard, Butter, Dripping or Tallow.

Here's a decent talk on the matter: https://youtu.be/Q2UnOryQiIY?t=230 and https://youtu.be/wPlHuXYI8v0?t=350
Lots of other sources online too

    • Do you have a non-video/audio source?

      • play video and switch tabs or turn off monitor thats what i do

    • Can't listen to this at the moment but I attended an interested event mid 2018 where a woman spoke about a lot of this stuff.

I have personally replaced margarine with butter but there is a lot more to it. I think we were sold a dummy growing up to believe butter is worse for you.

If you have any doubt why canola oil is unhealthy, check this video out of how this stuff is made https://youtu.be/omjWmLG0EAs Comparing this to olive oil, olive oil is cold pressed from olives with no industrial extraction required with chemicals etc. Same goes for modern “heart healthy” fats like margarine which are not healthy at all compared to age old fats like butter or coconut oil. Our bodies have not evolved to consume the modern industrial fats.
