Modded Wii U is an excellent piece of kit!

      • +2

True, but worth mentioning the last thing I did to my Wii U was set up a forwarder for Nintendont so I can play with the gamepad and never have to keep one of those silly Wiimotes around.

    • +3

      Wii do!

      I'll see myself out…

    • +2

I use Wiis every single day.

    • +2

no need for Wii - I use Dolphin emulator and Wii motes to play games emulated under Windows. Also can play Gamecube games.

    • Me it is outstanding. A Wii and a PS4 - all I need.

  • +1

i still have my wii u modded, i barely play it much but i wouldnt consider rid of it, i just lack time to play it but when i do go back it still find it really fun

    • Keep it for Mario kart double dash.

    • +1

what is it modded to do?

      • -3

        For mods.

      • +4

Probably to play pirated GameCube, Wii, Wii U and a whole host of emulators. It’s really great for it.

        • +1

yeah the wii u is abit like the PS3 with Backwards compatibility, you can play back up to 3 gen of Nintendo games plus the usual emulators when modded, so that's alot of nostalgic value one day when you want to revisit them.

        • +1

I have 3 Wii U's :P but i don't know much about them, just had a hunch that they'd be worth having for collection purposes.

  • Is this any better than the original Wii controllers? I find them really jerky and hard to use…

    • +1

Yeah the 'Plus' versions are smoother and more accurate picking up the 3D movement over the original. $20 is good!

    • +4

Only games that were designed to support the 'motion plus' feature get any benefit, there is a list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_that_support_Wii…

A normal wiimote has an IR camera for (relatively) accurate tracking when it's aiming towards the 'sensor bar' (just 2 IR LEDs), and an accelerometer so it knows what direction it's moving in.

'Motion plus' is a gyroscope, which allows the (few) titles that support it to understand the orientation of the wiimote regardless of where it is pointing, rather than just it's direction of movement.

It allows for things like more accurate sword waving, as that's a motion outside of the range of the IR tracking.

Edit: While not the most accurate, a normal wiimote shouldn't feel jerky. Perhaps a little laggy depending on TV used.
Make sure your sensor bar is clean and parallel with the TV, and that the sensor bar location option in the wii system settings is set correctly (above/below TV).
If you're playing on a modern LCD TV make sure it's in game mode for the wii's input. On my 2018 LG LCD its great in game mode, but in other modes the latency makes wiimote so laggy its almost unusable.

Second hand ones still sell for a high price. I'd buy a couple to collect and for future retro gaming. Third party ones will never be as good.

  • Any chance nationally?

    • +1

I haven't seen new Wii motes for ages anywhere. :(

      • I do had a pair of geniuse remote controller, I would like one more pair for the modded Wii, total four controllers are really fun with three kids from party games of Wii. But after ages seeking from market, it failed to hunt brand new authentic controller apart second hand ones.

    • Yes, they were dropped to this clearance price months ago.

  • +1

Watch them pull a Sony and after every last one is cleared from existence, find a new use for them with their current console*, like, I don't know, plonking Wii games on the Switch already.

*Like that time PS Move was declared entirely irrelevant and everyone was clearing pairs of them for five bucks new, only to be one of the main forms of control for PS VR years later and now you can't find a pair for under 80 on the best of days.

    • -5

      Thought PS VR was dead.

      • +7

Huh? It's the most popular it's ever been right now. It's really taking off.

        • Guess I upset a few people with my comment which wasn't meant as a dig against PS VR.

      • +2

PS VR is a lot of fun for the money.

      • +1

Believe it or not but PS VR is the only place where VR is doing ok. Everybody else is struggling or pulling out…

        • VR reminds me of 3D movies.

Interesting, but doesn’t stick for the most part.

  • +4

This is awesome!! I remember Motion Plus used to cost $20 by itself.

  • any targets in metro melb stock this?

    • Checked Targets in:

      • Doncaster Westfield
      • Fountain Gate
      • Cranbourne SC

No WiiMote+ or any Wii accessories up for sale, i.e. no stock has come through these stores for a while I'm assuming.

  • Picked up 4 from Horsham - which is in Victoria, near Stawell

    • Btw they don’t have any iPhone 6s Plus 32gb for $399 checked that deal there too

  • +1

I have a soft modded Wii. The kids still love super smash and Mario kart, although they have a xbone around.

  • +1

    Horsham!
    Middle of nowhere.

    • Just like Mount Gambier huh?

      • -2

Not, mount gambier is SA,not Vic

        • +5

          SA, the middle of nowhere.

  • +15

Horsham on the front page of Ozbargain. Never thought I'd see the day

  • Good price. It's much harder to find genuine controllers than wiiu's.

  • gotta love homebrew channel

  • -1

Do you need a chip to mod a wiiU?

    • No, from what i know it done in a similar way to the Wii

Enjoy your legal right to modify your console. Idonotknowwhy does not condone piracy.

      • +1

so its legal to install homebrew?

        • Yep, it's perfectly legal to modify your hardware/software and install homebrew.

It may be a violation of the terms of service for online services, which means you might get banned from online play or online stores if the service provider finds out (hack your wiiu/switch and the console can be banned, hack the ps4 and it can be banned).

And it's generally considered "okay" to backup your legally purchased games and play them, as long as you don't download them off the internet.

It's also technically possible to download an install games off the internet; but this is piracy, which Idonotknowwhy does not condone.

      • Used this guide and installed Haxchi and it works great for homebrew, haven’t tried vWii mod yet.

Just some consideration- WiiU supports up to 2TB hdd with Haxchi, I know Mocha has some other options for larger HDD never tried.

If you had the 4TB set for Wii (not WiiU) with 2x 2TB partitions for Wii and GameCube you can put it on vWii port 0 - never tried but read up on it… if anyone has a good vWii working would really like to offload the Wii

  • I have plenty of controllers, it's the nunchucks the kids keep killing… Chinese ones break in the connector real quick.

  • Is there any way to get these without visiting the local store? Talked to the customer service guy in Chatswood NSW, and he said there's no way that he's aware of

  • These also work on the Switch and PC. For Switch you need the 8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter. For PC or MAC just connect this via bluetooth. Controller can also use all of the accessories that connect to it.

Softmodding a Wii and Wii U is very easy. Even for someone who has never done this before. End result is a region free console that can play backup Wii / Wii U / Gamecube / WiiWare / Virtual Console games and Emulators fron SD card or USB storage. Just did a Wii over the weekend using ModMii

  • Hamilton Target (Victoria 3300)

The next major town near Horsham, has around 5 Wii Plus Remotes in stock.
Unsure of colors but i did see pink.

    • How’d you check? Would love to find some in Brissy.

      • I live in Hamilton and went in store to see if they had some $30 Nintendo switch games on hand
