  • You really shouldn't be paying more then $300 for google wifi at these price go for a better mesh product

    • Alot of people say the Google WIFI is a great mesh product.

Can you share your thoughts on what you mean by better?
      And example of better products?

Also, it was only 2 weeks ago Officeworks had this 3 pack for $398.

Netgear Orbi RBK50, can be had for under $400 and has incredible range. I got mine 6 weeks ago on sale for $360ish. Very happy, it works seamlessly and without a hiccup. You can go with RBK40 or 30 if you don't need the huge range the RBK50 offers.

I went with that over Google because Google's Mesh won't work if there is no internet connection, so no internal networking if the internet dies, which for me is a no-go since I want to access my Media Servers in different rooms if the internet dies. Also Google has enough info about me already, don't need them as a router/modem either.

        • Ummm, Nah, the network still works without internet. I'm not sure what you mean.

The google wifi needs internet if you want to make changes to the wifi (like colour of the LEDs, checking speed, renaming the nodes). But once it's set up, it doesn't need ongoing internet access

@dangerdanger: thanks for the clarification, i was told on here by multiple people it requires constant internet access to function. here i go perpetuating a lie

@sm3004: No worries. I just checked : unplugged my google wifi from the modem (ie is just the google wifi) and I can still browse for documents on my server, watch plex across server-to-apple-tv.

      • I got mine about 2 years ago for $300 I've heard the Netgear orbit rbk50 is better of you can get it for the same price.

I've had my Google wifi for about 6m, and it's never missed a beat. Setup was super easy, and it eliminated a couple of dead spots around the house. I can even pick up my wifi from my neighbours house and still connect at about 3/4 of the speed

Wife even approves of it because it looks pretty nice

  • Google mash

Is this like bangers and mash?

  • I have been using Google wifi for six months with no dropouts or having to reset, it just works

I didn’t have a doubt until you said “it just works”.

    • it just works

But other products like Orbi works great!!!
      :)

  • I've been super happy with mine. I was suffering constant dropouts and low Wifi speeds on three previous routers (which were all well-regarded models), ended up determining that someone near my house had equipment pumping out lots of noise on 2.4GHz at random times of the day (I suspect it might be someones old cordless phone).

Once I switched to the Google Wifi though, my network has been much more robust, and I don't have any dropouts or noticeable speed impacts. Video streaming through the house is much better too, particularly with multiple streams going at once.

I also appreciated being able to use each mesh point as a bridge. So I have one behind the TV, connected to a switch, which is in turn connected to all the lounge room devices, and another mesh point similarly set up in my office.

  • I returned them due to high ping for gaming.

  • I saw Orbi RBK40 this morning in catch.com.au that was $324.65 I think it is better than this google wifi.

But it is gone now :-( what a damn miss!!
