    "Good News:
This Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 comes with Official Global ROM.
Some phones will come with a logo "China mobile 4G LTE" on back.
Don't worry, the network band is the same."

    One of the comments says
    " no global rom.
    2019-01-11 02:52:24

Why do you say it's global ROM and send them with Chinese? Am I going to sit around and figure out how to change the rom myself? You're unacceptable.

    "

    Not global version?

    • +1

Although some stated they received global versions, it does look awfully risky with quite a few of the comments in later pages saying they got the Chinese ROM and (with one comment dated 11/1/2019). Personally wouldn't take the risk at the moment.

Also not good to see the store had every buyer's rating 5/5 when clearly they are not happy in the comment. Terrible.

      • +5

Yep, because Banggood don't publish negative reviews about their products. At least not in regards to the star rating. Try making a review <4 stars and I bet it won't get published.

        • That happened to me last week. My 3 star review was not published by Banggood.

    • +1

At this price, it's the Chinese version with the global ROM installed, not the global version (packaging and everything in English, with a European charger).

    • same hardware, some sellers reflash to global ROM before shipping as in china the china telecom version sellers cheaper than the generic global version.

Note 7 is coming, released Jan 15 in India
The Redmi Note 7 price starts at CNY 999 (roughly $200) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage option, going up to CNY 1,199 (roughly $220) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage option, and CNY 1,399 (roughly $280) for the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage option.
Note 7 Pro will be $300 ish.

    • Jan 28, the Samsung Galaxy M series will be announced. Or released. One of those. This is Samsung's answer to the Redmi phones.

Interesting to see what they'll offer, and at what price.

      • +1

The Samsung looked decent, but it feels like the note 7 was made almost to fight that phone directly. Note 7 is looking to be possible best phone for that price every made.

Good to see Samsung competing though

Samsung has rubbish Non-flagship phones. That's why their Chinese market shares dropped from almost 20% to 0.8% in 5 years.

        • +1

Not true. I have a galaxy a7 that's been nothing short of bomb proof. Fast, handsome, decent battery and insane value.

          • @freakatronic: How are the A phones with their security updates? What patch level is your A7 on now?

        • I think it could just be poor marketing for the other series. There is almost zero marketing done for their non-flagship phones.

The Galaxy S phones go head to head with iPhones. That's what their ad campaigns are all about. Because they never talk about their A and J phones, no-one even considers them. That's what I think anyway.

And now they will have the M series which are meant to be in direct competition with Redmi phones. If that's true, then they will sit right in the middle of the A and J series.

Redmi have remarkable value for money. But if Samsung make a series of phones that can match the Redmi phones in terms of value for money, I'd be giving my money to Samsung. Even with their stupid bloatware.

    • @Jamesx, re Note 7, Try gsmarena for specs, much better in my opinion….
Still no NFC and Band 28, so it's a no for me.

Bought it from Gearbest a few months ago for $149usd.

    • $149 USD is a great price, was it from a deal posted on OzBargain?

      • +1

Nah man, it was standard price in December for the pink one for like 2 weeks. Even AliExpress had it for the same on the 11.11 sales and the GST was offset by the 10% Shopback rewards

we have 4 of these phones in our family for a year now. We are really happy with them. 3 were bought from Banggod and I bought mine from gearbest, came with Chinese rom, it took me a few hours to figure out how to flash a global rom to it so it can update with wifi.

  • Need to uncheck Shipping Insurance to get AU$221.45. Is it ok to uncheck it?

    • It is some kind of risk, more risk if paying without PayPal.

  • Mi a2 64gb for less than $20 more on eBay

Even with global you might want to reflash to make sure seller didn't add extra value options…. had one phone with crypto miner in background.

People want to pay HJ prices and expect Rockpool service.

  • According to my post here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/433407), people think the Redmi note 5 is bad…

    …it's not.

  • +1

Sorry, but if this is for the Chinese version with global ROM installed (which seems to be the case based on reviews), then the price is not special.

It's $143 USD for the same pink one on AliExpress + 5% shopback. Even with gst added it's still a bit cheaper.

Thanks bought one, we have 3 redmi note 5 now. 3G ram for my son, 4G ram for my wife and 6G ram for me :)

    • +1

Haha, hope your the main breadwinner lol.

I got the global for this price when it first came out.

There are better options available now.

  • If my recent banggood experience buying this phone is any indication… the phone is being shipped with the Global ROM installed, but they've had to unlock the bootloader to overwrite the Chinese ROM.

For me this left a very bad taste in my mouth and is likely to be the last strike for me. I'll be giving them a miss for a while.

Buy a local phone with local support … will cost more …. my nokia has band 28, nfc, android one, AU charger and no bloat or unlocked bootloaders…but cost $320.

      • +2

Hehehe… where's the fun in that?

The Nokia 5 and 6 are interesting local options as competitors for the Xiaomi's etc, but bang for buck I still feel that Chinese grey imports still have the edge. Xiaomi has really hit their stride… they're making some very nice phones.

  • This sounds like it would make a great, low cost audio playback dedicated phone, since it has a SD card slot, headphone jack, and Aptx Bluetooth codec support. Startup times would be slow compared to a dedicated MP3 Player like a FiO, but you can choose you own music and audiobok players, image viewers, etc.

Low end Chinese designed tech is a thing of the past now. Made in China will soon have the revered status of "Made in Japan" or "Made in Germany". The Chinese are giving the masses what they want: affordable prices with a good feature set.
