Hey all,

LTL;FTP. Just noticed these boots from Rivers on sale. Has anyone tried these before? I've been on the lookout for some GYW boots but can't justify the price of $200 USD for a pair of entry level ones recommended on Reddit or ~$300 for the RM's reguarly seen here. For $50 I thought it might be cheap to give it a try. Please let me know if they're even worth $50. There's a bunch of reviews but I'm always a bit skeptical of them.

P.S Don't forget the $10 code for signing up

P.P.S Does Cashrewards work with the sign-up voucher?

I think the issue with these are that they may be goodyear welted, but is the leather any good? Good construction methods also need good materials. And at that price point, I don't think good materials can be bought/sold at that price point.

Of course, anyone who has better knowledge is more than happy to prove me wrong.

    • They supposedly have a 2 year guarantee which I think is not bad for $50.

      • They must be very confident in their product if they can offer a 2 year guarantee.

My father-in-law is a beef farmer. He loves Rivers work boots. Twice he has taken the boots back when they started to fail -. stitching came undone and sole peeled off.

          Both times got an exchange

  • What’s Goodyear welted? Tyre company? 🤷‍♂️

It’s a way the outsole is stiched with the insole which allows it to be restitched since it won’t lose its shape like a cemented one. Something like that

It's a construction method of joining the soles to the upper body of the shoe where the soles can be replaced by a trained cobbler once they're worn out while the upper can be continued to be used. It used to be vary common for leather shoes and boots but now days, it's been replaced by glue on the lower end stuff. Generally, having a goodyear welted shoe means it should be of decent quality although I can't comment on these.

As the others have said it's a type of shoe contruction. Here's a quick video with the cross-section of a GYW shoe. Only about a minute of it is relevant. https://youtu.be/UdW23-A0twc?t=19

      • Thanks. I guess worth a try for the price

    • What’s Goodyear welted? Tyre company?

The machinery used for the process of Goodyear welting was invented in 1869 by Charles Goodyear Jr., the son of Charles Goodyear
Charles Goodyear was an American self-taught chemist and manufacturing engineer who developed vulcanized rubber
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is named after him

the main advantage of Good year welted shoes is that if you have an expensive pair of shoes, and the soles wear out you can replace them
the cost of replacing is around $100 (correct me if I am wrong)

so while these shoes, if they are Goodyear welted cost $50 it won't be worth replacing their soles for $100
but yes a two year warranty is good

      • Sorry, but Thomas Hancock actually invented vulcanisation of rubber around 1842, not Goodyear. Apart from that you are factually correct

  • Thanks OP … purchased the lace-up version which is also on special for $49 with the sign up voucher.

    • What did you do with sizing, did you go down 1?

      • Went with the usual size 9 / 43 as per their reference chart.

        • Just picked up these boots … quality ok for price and sizing as expected.

These look like a fake goodyear welt with a glued on sole.
I doubt even can China produce a real goodyear welted boot for $50.

  • For 50 it's worth the gamble. Store pickup in case it's the wrong size.

I'd stay away from any Rivers products, the worst possible quality - I truly mean this, particularly their shoes.

i have 6 rivers shoes/boots, a pair of their sandals and two shoes and 3 pair boots. 4 are at least 4 years old, the sandals 2 years and 1 pr boots are less than a year - cost $25 on special. All are in good nick. All are very comfortable. One of the boots are https://www.rivers.com.au/shop/goodyear-welt-boot/p/2939MBOO… - a goodyear type like in the deal. They are well made and i really doubt you could find better quality for the price really

    • you mean you can get better quality for $50? 'worst quality' compared to what?

    • Just picked it up.l (black) It's actually a very solid shoe. Doesn't look cheap and it's very comfortable. Comparing to the NB runners people were getting excitet about here the quality is miles ahead and much better bang for buck.

Ive had these for 5-6 years and can vouch for them. Navigated Asia for over 2 years in them and had many other adventures. The leather has faded as I've never oiled or polished them but the Goodyear welt is still going strong. Went to throw them out the other day but got sentimental and decided to just keep for paddock bashing. Considering what I put them through, they are the most durable pair of boots I've owned.

I own RMs and Redwings which have better craftsmanship but these are great for messy afternoons or helping your best mate move house or a body and not worry about getting then dirty.

Definately size down and add a comfy inner sole. They are by far the best boots for $50-$60. A new pair is cheaper than new soles.

    • Thanks for the input. Makes me feel a lot better for about buying them and will definetly get some insoles (currently have a pair of Rivers dress shoes that I've owned for 7 months but I'm finding the insole is getting less comfortable as time goes on).

    • Any recommendations on insoles? I've never found one that that was very comfortable.
