Telstra 2018 iPad Plan $29/Month for 24 Months with 10GB Data Per Month

2790

Seems a good deal to me. $29 per month for 24 months. 32g 6th gen iPad with 10gig of data per month then throttled to 1.5mbps. So that's $696 for the cellular iPad (currently $667 at officeworks) and 240g of data over the 2 years.

Plus I got $150 cashback through my work run cashback site, ymmv but that took my total down to $546.

    • I have a bunch of both Android tabs and iPads.

Apple make good hardware. They tend to perform well.

But if you're used to Android, you will get very annoyed at all the things you take for granted but cannot do on the iPad. Things like sending files to another device via Wifi-direct. WPS for wifi passwords. Plugging in a mass storage device. Plugging it into a computer to use as a mass storage device. Shooting photos in 16:9 (you have to crop the photos manually yourself). A universal back button I find very handy. If you want a tablet in wide screen, you can't get one from Apple. Even though their phones are wide screen.

      • I understand those massive limitations. The pen support somewhat offsets that. Essentially what I'm asking is, what can I do with an ipad? I know that it has many exclusive apps and I want to read about the great ones

  • Can anyone know this data sim is working with telstra air?

    • Yes, it does

  • Can this be added to an existing account? Sign up process seems to be creating a new one.

    • Can confirm I bought one on an existing account.

  • Have been wanting to purchase a tablet for a while now.

Although I'd rather an Android device, this deal is too good to pass on.

    Thanks OP.

  • Could I remove the SIM card and just use it in my Android phone, and just have the iPad as wifi only?

    • It's a data only SIM is my understanding. Not much good in a phone unless you don't want to make calls.

    • I just went into a store and was almost as about to sign.

They said it won't work in a smartphone.

If anyone has theirs and can confirm, let me know!

      • I got these bits of ambiguous info out of Telstra Chat. From the first paragraph, Telstra isn't doing what it used to do with BigPond MBB modems & BigPond SIM cards (BP tied the IMEI number to the SIM card number, so that modem can only work with that SIM card & vice versa). I don't know how Telstra knows when a "tablet" SIM card is inserted into a non-tablet device so as to block the connection.

As this is a Tablet plan, this SIM card can only be used in Tablets. Regardless if it is the iPad you're trying to get it on or another Tablet, as long as it is a Tablet, this SIM card and plan will work on it.

We no longer have the data sharing feature on our new plans. Whilst we are unable to do that anymore, you can definitely share your data via iPad personal hotspot.

When I asked about putting the SIM card to use in an old Telstra Wi-Fi modem:

We have different plans on Mobile Broadband devices like a 4G Wi-Fi Modem.

And though you cannot share data, with our new MBB plans, you get a new device like the Netgear Nighthawk M1 for $0 on the Medium and Large plans.

  • What is the new iPad? Their models are confusing af now.

Is this locked to the Telstra SIM? Travel overseas alot now.

Is it the iPad 6,7,8? Is the screen still setback from the actual touch panel or compressed together like the ipad pro?

  • Sorry, I don't understand how you get 10gb/month? I can only see 7gb (2+5).

  • Can i tether data with this plan?

  • I signed up but didn't get a confirmation email. Anyone else in this boat?

    • I got a confirmation, but after few hours they cancelled my order saying failed to verify some documents. (They sent that before I got a chance to verify)

    • Did you end up getting an email? Still waiting for mine.

  • I used shopback and visit Telstra,

when sign, it said "That mobile number isn't eligible"

    any requirement for mobile number?

  • Microsoft Surface Go has the same deal too. $50/m with 10Gb/m
    Is this worth it?

    • Depends how much the data is worth is to you. The same model (LTE)is available from Microsoft for $999 - the telstra deal will cost you 1200 eventually. Is 10GB a month from Telstra worth $200? Maybe yes, especially as you'll be paying the 1200 over 24 months instead of upfront.

Personally, I'd probably just go with the WiFi model direct from Microsoft, which has same technical specs but only costs 849 iirc.

  • A little confused about how much data I will get, in the order confirmation email it says:
    Telstra Tablet Plan $29 - $29.00
    Apple iPad 128GB Gold $0.00 $15.00
    Bonus Data - 5GB - Included
    Bonus Data - 5GB - Included
Looks like there are 2*5GB bonus data, or the first one is how they describe the plan inclusion?
Anyway 10GB is good enough and 15GB is definitely a bonus :)

    • Did u end up getting 15gb?

      • Nop, just 10GB as promised.

  • It seems to me that the companion plan is the only one with peace of mind data for $29 p/m and that you need an existing telstra mobile service contract to get it? Otherwise the standalone plan is same price but no peace of mind data? Is that correct?

    • +1

      Yes, spot on

      • +1

I chanced the arm with the live chat and seem to have been successful getting the $29 deal with peace of mind data without having any other Telstra services. Hope the order goes through!

  • Thanks OP.

  • Is everyone’s order successful?
They cancelled my order and I called service center, the lady told me they can’t verify my ID with my internet order. She offered me to order over the phone. But I don’t want to give up cashback :-(

    • No cashback on tablet plans anyway.

  • Would this be good for drawing/digital art?

    • It's good for some casual drawing but if you're a serious artist then you'd want to get the pro models as they have a faster screen refresh rate (no lag when drawing) and the 9.7inch screen will feel small

    • The newer Apple Pencil only works on the Pro models too (the original one works with the 9.7). Agreed with Ononono on their points too :)

      • I did some brief research and it seems like pro models are double or even triple the cost of it. Is it really justifiable just because of input lag? Admittedly I play video games more than I do art but I want to take the latter more seriously.

  • can't seem to find the 128gb version no matter where i click. I thnk they may have removed it

    • click ops link, scroll up, click 128gb under Choose memory capacity

      • I'm looking but I can't seem to find it/choose memory capacity. :(

        Has it been disabled?

        • +1

The site looks different to what it did yesterday, you can find it in the regular tablet section with same features but ask for the peace of mind offer if you go ahead with it

          • @blueyez: Cool. Thanks for the reply.

Just reading through the comments, to get the "Peace of mind" I have to ask the Chat Rep AND have an existing mobile number (prepaid or contract?) with Telstra? Apologies because I'm not that savvy with all these mobile plans.

            • @Donatello: I didn't get the offer myself (still deciding), but from the more recent comments people have managed to get the deal without being an existing Telstra customer… maybe confirm with a Telstra rep?

              • @blueyez: I tried asking for the 'Peace of mind' data with online chat, no go unfortunately. I'd be lucky to use more than a couple of GB in a month anyway

  • Thanks, tomcat83!

Ordered via Chat this morning 128GB 10GB $34pm
Will be good for wife to do work and quick drawings on the go :)

  • Which is better to go on, the $29 or $35 for a fifo worker to watch foxtel, Netflix ect on?

    • $29 plan should be enough for that :)

  • How does the $10/month credit work? Does that get added to the plan automatically to make it $29/m?

  • Although this deal not really eligible for cashback sites did anyone get tracked confirmation, and could there be a slight chance.

    • I placed an online order approx 30 min ago and just received an email from Cash Rewards that it is being tracked ($90) and it is also showing in my CR account as pending. I'm not holding my breath, but in the past I've always received the cash back from Telstra so you never know. :)

  • Thanks OP, just signed up for an Ipad for my wife :)

  • Are you sure the S Plan ($29/month) qualifies for the 10gb data? I asked the online sales support and they said only the M Plan ($39/month) gets the 10gb data.

    • Wait, unless the $10/month credit is deducted from the $39/month cost. Is that right??

  • I'm still on telstra $20 ipad 5 plan and due in July.worthing paying off and upgrade?

  • I bought this today in store thank you community

  • Can someone please confirm if my understanding is correct or is there any better or cheaper way?
    1. Pay $29 x 24 = $696
    2. Shopback cashback $125 from the 24 months plan
Net to pay in total is $571
Can someone please confirm that we will get cashback from Shopback for $125.
    Thank you

    • Read the comments and you will discover.

      • I have read but still don’t quite get it :(

        • +1

It's pretty obvious… and the answer is no.

        • Always read the Ts&Cs

  • I want iPad Pro, Please :D

  • I pulled the trigger and got this deal at a Telstra store. Got the 128GB with PoM plan.

This will probably be the last iPad with a headphone jack. :(

    • You are lucky. I've just had a live chat and was told the 128GB does not include PoM plan.

      • +1

I think they are more flexible at a Telstra store, salespeople have targets to meet.

        • The guy i got in store yesterday, despite knowing his stuff, refused to put through my order because it was "too close" to closing time, despite being in store 20mins before close.

Their loss - he also refused to add the peace of mind to the offer.

          • @blueyez: Wow, I entered the store 10 minutes before close and all the staff were really helpful/nice and we went overtime as well.

They also added Peace of Mind no questions asked. You must have gotten a bad store :/

            • @Slut: Ditto. I had to go in store after making an online order, but cos I had so many prepaid accounts, my account ID was flagged as suspicious. So had to sign up in store and verify my identity lol

On my contract it stated i have Peace of Mind data

          • @blueyez: Yes I had that before

  • $29 Tablet Companion Plan - $10/mth recurring credit + $10/mth device repayments

So once 24 months contract finish, then we only need to pay $19 for 10Gb + peace of mind data ?!

    • +1

By reading The contract I understand it should be like that

    • Did you get one too?
My docs says $29 plan too, but it s highly confusing on the calculations.

    • That's what the Telstra rep said when the contract is finished. But it is at Telstra's discretion to maintain or end the (bonus) offer. The Telstra rep recommended that I visit a Telstra shop in the 23rd month to make sure that the offer is maintained after the contract.

    • +1

I'd like to share what the Telstra document said. Please share if you got the same text, and from this, how much would be the plan after the 24 months?

      Welcome to your new plan!

      What we're doing today.
You've chosen to sign up to the $29 Tablet Plan for 12 months (min cost $348).

      Device
You've chosen the Apple iPad 9.7 G6 32 GB, with device payments of $10 per month (after a $17 per month discount) for 24 months if you stay on your plan.

The total remaining payment for your Apple iPad 9.7 G6 32 GB is $648, which will reduce by $27 eacch month you stay on your play and repayment option….

      Extras
You've also chosen to take up the following extras:
      MessageBank
      International day Pass
      New Phone and Tablet Feeling
$10 Monthly Credit Until Recontract - You will receive a Bonus $10 monthly mobile credit.

$10 Monthly Credit - Until Recontract - It will be applied as a credit onyour bill each month until you recontract, cancel your plan, or move to an ineligible plan.

      • Looking at the hard copy I got from the Telstra store, the only differences:
        * iPad model (128 GB) and device payment of $15 per month (after a $17 per month discount)
        * Remaining payment $768, which will reduce by $32 each month

  • Can someone please clarify for me - if i'm looking to potentially use this overseas when travelling - can an international simcard be put into it? To be used for both calls and data? (I don't have an iphone)

    • +1

No calls (the iPad can't be used to make/receive calls, nor SMS or MMS), but data is fine.

  • +1

Bit the bullet. Got the peace of mind after chatting to a 2nd livechat rep and comparing to Optus :)

  • Has anyone received Shopback rebate on 24month data plans?

Edit: Never mind, it says tablet plans do not qualify.

  • Is this deal still on?

    • Check the website ?

  • Went to the Telstrq store and they said this deal is for existing customers only. Huh?

    • The companion plan is for existing customers, but you can get the same plan as a new customer for the same price. The only difference between the plans that I can see is the companion plan has 'Peace of mind' data

  • Thanks OP! I managed to get the iPad 128GB version w/ 10GB for $34 a month with the peace of mind data option added.

    • How, in store?

      • Not sure if it matters, but I was already a Telstra customer with my mobile phone plan. All I had to do was asked them to change it from the $29 tablet plan to the $29 companion tablet plan with PoM data option via live chat.

  • +1

Thanks Op too. Just signed up $34 per month for 128gb with POM data. This is all done via live chat

  • I think this deal is pretty good as you get the pomd, has anyone figured out if we can hotspot or tether this pomd?

Also has anyone figured out how to by pass the imposed sim swap restriction by telstra? As in ipad sim wont work on a phone.

    • It works, you just can't make/receive calls. I am using it in an iPhone as a dedicated GPS. You can even send SMSes @ $0.25/each (painful lesson learnt lol)

  • I'm very interested in the 128GB plan but no luck since I'm not an existing customer. Any luck for new customers? Thanks.

    • Anyone can get this plan

      • +1

Sorry for not being accurate. I want the POM as well but in store and online reps said have to be existing customers

  • Had been tossing up between this and Optus. Ended up going with Telstra as the Optus $25 deal was over and their $30 one was not as attractive.

Chat agent was nice, offered an extra 5GB to make it 15GB + PoM but couldn't add it, so offered to add that 5GB bonus to an existing service or $10 a month off. So I end up with $10 off my JB $45 plan… Rather than having to port out of that one later this year, I'm happy to keep $35 for 50GB (no PoM, no international calls) for another year!

  • Annoying, I signed up but they put me on the $19 plan even though I asked for $29 plan
    Useless telstra

    • Did you get this resolved? It could only be done via Chat, and my agent kept confirming and I received the plans via e-mail soon after.

      • No, I tried again via chat but they didn’t do it.
I made a official complaint so hopefully they can rectify this issue. Not sure why they couldn’t do it.
For some reason they didn’t know about the piece of mind that comes with the $29 plan, I had to send them the link

        • I've tried twice via live chat. No one seems to know about this plan. To be fair it said the offer expired 27/01/2019 (on the original link), they still do a plan on the 128Gb iPad for $44 per month with $10 credit and 5Gb bonus data, but it's not the Peace Of Mind data where you get shaped if you exceed it, they'll slug you for additional data.

Calling Customer service wasn't any help either… they're just as clueless!

          • @Graffin: I spoke to someone on live chat as well as in my local Telstra shop, and both were fully clued on about this deal.
I suggest you try someone else.

          • @Graffin:

To be fair it said the offer expired 27/01/2019

            I didn't even know that!

I just clicked on O.P.'s link and it looks different to the one I was expecting.

Ah, here is the one I used and started the Chat from:

            https://www.telstra.com.au/tablets/tablet-plans/29-companion

It's a Companion Plan so you'd need an existing Telstra service to "add-on" to.

          • +3

@Graffin: Send an official complaint and give them this link:
            https://www.telstra.com.au/tablets/tablet-plans/29-companion

I basically explained that staff had no idea and I’m sick of talking to clueless staff.

I got the 128gb for an extra $5 a month so $34 with piece of mind

They called me back after a few days and now I’m on the correct plan.
            Good lunch

  • Need to get an iPad for daughter's school :-( not happy about it.

Anyway, I am going to get insurance to cover accidental damage, theft or loss, as kids can easily do it…
Telstra is charging $15 per month (in addition to excess in case of claims). Its a good policy, but slight more than my budget.

Who else has an insurance policy worth considering ?
FYI, I don't have home insurance to fall back to.

    Thanks.
