Not sure if any ozbrgainers are into bone broth for the health benefits but this is a good deal if anyone is. I was looking around for bone broth and saw this on Amazon so going to give it a try. Came up free delivery for me - not sure if anything to do with prime but I only have 1 in cart so maybe not?

    Health benefits?
    How so?

    • +5

All the stuff you read on it is that it ‘may’ do this and it ‘may’ do that.

Well I ‘may’ win the lotto - highly unlikely. Would be good if there was positive evidence for benefit.

Saying that though - the fact that you can fill up on a low calorie soup/broth will have some health benefits if you’re aiming for weight loss.

I'd say insulin control is far more important for weight loss than calorie restriction. Calorie restriction isn't sustainable long term, and most people end up worse off in the long run as caloric restriction negatively impacts metabolism (just look at 6 year follow-up study from Biggest Loser contestants). Saying that though - broth is generally low-carb and therefore won't spike insulin. It is also often recommended for those following low-card diets for the sodium and mineral content (among other health benefits eg. gut health).

          • @Muscles: Hey Muscles, most people aren't bodybuilders (or even weight lifters/gym-goers for that matter), which I'd say is the majority of Layne's audience and who are generally more insulin-sensitive. So naturally, they can eat more carbs than most people to replenish muscle glycogen, without it going into fat storage.
I was talking more for diabetics/obese/metabolically unwell people who would be far better off restricting carbs/insulin spiking foods than they would be restricting calories.

Here's a talk that's more in line with what I was talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E16hfXmPGcA

Also, Layne actually talked about Keto and the study I referenced above here: https://youtu.be/ZdePEJG10GQ?t=318

            • @elli0t: Too many generalisations…
It’s always calories in and calories out, regardless if that person maintains or not. It’s science.

  • Could you not make Some broth yourself?

    • I suppose this is more convenient.

      • But the best part of the beef broth is the BEEF.

        • Where's the beef?

I'm into it to the tune of a cup a day for everyone in the family but we make our own in the slow cooker.

It's very healing for the gut lining which is our primary use.

    • Not sure when down vote for you comment. Adjusted.

      Says who?

      • +3

Me. You replied to me saying it.

Which doesn't mean much if there's proof.

    • That's junk science. You think that by the time it gets to your gut it's still got magic powers?

  • 70% off and it's $96 a kg.

To be fair, bonox, on special @ 5.20, works out at $24 a kilo - but is only 23% beef extract. Bovril at $48 a kilo is only 58% yeast extract. Both of these are part of "western" traditional cures, with beef tea high on the list of historic remedies. My posting record will demonstrate i have little time or respect for woo-woo flim-flam and marketing hype from those parasitising the diet/health/fitness community with slightly modified milk-powder, "magic" teas and miraculous claims for boneseed goji berries and the like, but this, for those who use it, is cheaper than the commonly touted and accepted alternatives I referenced.

For serious medical needs however, one should really stick to chicken soup…

    Doctor?

    • That's pretty close to holding out as a medical practitioner.

  • Made in Australia :-)

    • With 100% imported ingredients

      • Local and imported ingredients? I was mainly concerned about the origin of beef products - it LOOKS like it's Australian.

  • Cheapest Broth I’ve ever seen…..better double bag it.

I just started making it myself. Cheap kmart pressure cooker. Local butcher provides me beef bones from grass fed stock. Let it to do its thing over a few hours on a Sunday. And I have over a weeks supply to fridge or freeze.

Lord it grosses me out in the fridge though. Like a jug of mucus…. blek gag blek
