LG 70'' UHD UK6540PTA for $1695 Click & Collect or + Delivery @ The Good Guys

1000

It's my first post, so please be gentle. :) personally think it is a good price for a large 70'' UHD TV from LG. Apparently price dropped from 2100ish.

People who are keen on big screen may also consider 75” Samsung 7100 series going for $1800ish on eBay sales which may be a better bang for buck.

    • +3

This LG is mich better than the Samsung 7100 series.

      • +2

Any reason why? I'm no expert but everything I've read seems to suggest that the LG is only superior for viewing angles. Otherwise the colour reproduction and blacks of the Samsung were the better option.

      • +3

All down to personal preference I think. Never been a big LG fan myself but that is just me. Comment was meant to give a viable alternative to the Op, for a cheaper price, especially if someone prefers Samsung over LG (as we do).

My comment was directed to OzSikh. I'm genuinely interested in his reasoning as I'm tossing up between the two. I saw a pic of the LG in in a dark room and it was unable to produce blacks.. only a mass of inconsistent grey

          • +6

@ChmpgneTasteBeerBdgt: LG uses IPS panels which are not known for great black levels however they excel other panels when it comes to rich pop colors and amazing viewing angles (of course with the exception of OLED panels). I used to have LG IPS TV and now owe Samsung TV and I find Samsung to be better if you're watching straight in front of the TV. But if some of the seats are positioned more than 90 degree viewing angle, the screen looks horribly grayish. LG on the other hand was perfectly watchable from almost any angle up to 170 degree or so. And the colours were richer. I had to increase the colour saturation of samsung to reach LG IPS levels. Anyways, there are pros and cons for both TVs but I personally prefer LG OS and IPS panels over Samsung ones. Just my 5 cents.

            • +2

@npnp: Are you sure that LG still use IPS in 4K TVs ?

They have been using RGBW technology which is crap, not 4k

              Google LG RGBW

              • +1

@Grok: Hi SamR… RGBW has nothing to do with resolution. Each pixel simply has 4 colours instead of the usual three. Having the added white (Or the old Sharp Quattrons having Yellow) simply makes the tv work less hard at producing certain colours and therefore more energy efficient. And for what it's worth… blending red, blue and green equally at max 255 colour volume equals White.

                • @Carporium: Yes it does

You don't get full 4K resolution, why would you buy an LG (non OLED) when you can buy a Samsung?

              • @Grok: Explains why this TV has pretty crap blacks.

            • +1

@npnp: In brightly lit scenes without dark areas IPS might even look more realistic, there's something artificial about OLED colour like it's too eye popping or something.

      • I'm basically tossing up between the two so I'd love more info on this please. I looked at them both in the shop and couldn't tell any difference. Moving up from a 4 year old samsung 1080 60" screen

        • Hi Mallard. It is a tough pick. Both are entry models from either brand. Both on paper seem quite similar. What separates them is price, brand loyalty (if you have any) and what YOU like better. Having seen them both and all the others it really does come down to which you like better for the price… too close to call otherwise.

          • @Carporium: Thank you. I think the LG can be had for $500 less than the Samsung. But maybe I will wait a bit longer and see what happens to prices this year.

It is used be the kids more than me, and we have a projector in the other living area. I just love researching tech before I buy, and finding bargains on this site

            • @Mallard: Hi Mallard. In that case the 65" samsung NU7100 is being run out at $1245. Right now. Grab it while you still can if that's the model you want. Samsung doesn't produce a 70" so your left with a big price jump to the 75" samsung compared with the 70" LG… And I wouldn't bank on the Samsung NU7100 getting down below $2000. Maybe the 2019 RU series (NU series is 2018) might, but likely a year away before it reaches that price point. I hope to eat my words sooner than that though…

              • @Carporium: Recently the 75” has come down to the $1800’s so to say that there is a big jump in price for 5” extra isn’t true.

You would be paying less than $200 for 5” extra, which I’d go with personally given no brand loyalty or preference in appearance.

                • @joeiwu: @joeiwu the LG is available for $1356, so it's about $500 more for the 75".

But the 75" has 20% more screen area than the 70", hence my predicament.

                  • @Mallard: True, I’ve found that for some reason Apple TV doesn’t play too nice with my older LG TV, so I’ve not got a good impression and so far the Samsung and Panasonic plays nice. I believe the 65” 7100 Samsung series are dropping close to the $1k mark which may also be worth considering!

    • Any link for this?

Despite whatever people say, good first post OP.

    Good post, good price.

  • +2

Seems to be same price at Bing Lee and Harvey Normans

  • Good price for what it is.

    Well done, mate. keep posting.

  • Good price, thanks OP.

  • Im pretty sure this tv is edge lit the 75 is backlit my understanding is edge lit screens are not that great

    • Hi Iceman1384… the same model in any size has the same backlit tech. Chances are as its an entry level model in 50inch all the way up to 86inch…. they are edge lit. Full array backlit is quite expensive so therefore reserved for the higher end LCD tv's. Such as LGs 800 series, Sony's 9000 series and Samsung's Q9 series just to name a few.

      • Oh my bad I thought it was the ptb model that one has edge lit up to 70” then the 75” is backlit

        • Good catch. My bad. UK6540 is not the same backlight tech as UK6500. Based on that I wonder what everyone else's excuse is for not competing with the 75 and 86" LG direct array….

I got a smaller version and I can recommend. the best: 1. image is fantastic. view angle at 65 degree is the same as sitting in front. I watch from a lounge chair most of the time so this was important. 2. webos is very nice and UI is sleek. 3. remote is fantastic. easy to type , Netflix button is very handy.
    4. speakers are decent. much better than my old Sony. I use a 5.1 system anyway for movies.
    5. no fuss with contrast/blacks/etc. the tv got an automatic picture set that is very good. i compared with low ends (TCL/Hisense/Panasonic/ and even some Samsung's) and I found this one the best.
    6. clear voice mode is VERY nice.

you can keep looking for more specs but the above items were good enough for me to get this instead of a panasonic.

Can make this cheaper by another 300$ if you have amex Domayne offer saved somewhere

(Ask for price match at Harvey or Domayne, but there)

  • What is everyone's opinion on keeping a tv in a hot room?

I am thinking of getting a TV for maybe the attic or lounge room but better if it is in the attic as the lounge room is used as a meditation hall sometimes and for people sleeping so it might not be the best idea to have a TV there.

It easily gets 30 degrees celsius in both rooms but more so in the attic with limited air coming through the windows.

Anyone experienced any issues with placing a TV in a hot space?

    • I’d have imagined 30 is fine…I mean it’s Australia and good chunks of the place have been sitting at 40+ these past few weeks.

      • Yeah if it was 40+ in my room I think I would need to consider Air conditioning asap. I think it only goes to mid 30s in my room.

Now this same TV is on sale binglee ebay much cheaper than this price. I bought one myself.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/434710

    • Mostly ship only in NSW

    • only for NSW unless you organize your own delivery..here is binglee response over the chat "Currently for larger items such as tvs on our eBay page, it is only available for delivery within NSW Sydney metro area or near one of our local stores, our melbourne warehouse will not currently have that product in stock so it is not available for delivery or pick up there"

  • I got 70” UK65 yesterday for same price from HN and salesperson three in surge protector and “$80” HDMI cable.

    • But they were $1,356 from Bing Lee yesterday so $339 is a lot of money for an $80 cable and a surge protector.

  • Harvey Normal seem to have the same price but 'with a $170 gift card'?
