  • how come?

All solar lights I have ever bought from Bunnings died between a few days to a month. Never lasted more than a month. Landfill garbage.

    • Which part of it fails? Battery? Water gets into it?

      • The ones I've tried all need full, direct sun for most of the day if you want more than 30-60 mins of light. Cloudy days or a spot partially shaded for part of the day by a tree and the battery charges even less.
I think the problem is el cheapo solar cells that don't have capacity to charge the battery most days.

      • Yes to both. Batteries can be replaced but a rusted circuit board can't. Also the clear plastic cover over the solar panel can break down and reduce light transmission.

The only solar lights I've had decent longevity from are the sensor lights where the light is separate from the solar panel and joined with a cable. They generally use lithium-ion 18650 batteries, and have a solar panel both big enough to charge them properly and that can be directed to pick up the most sunlight during the day.

        • I wonder if you can spray the solar panel with some clear varnish to keep it nice and clear?

Agreed. Even their expensive ones are rubbish. Ones from Costco still going strong but not cheap.

Save your money to get decent solar lights from a lighting shop, or get 12v ones installed.

  • Well the comments are a downer. Looks like I’ll leave it then - even as a “toy” for a couple of pots on the balcony.
