I look at cameras every now and then; nofrills is consistently cheap.

    • They are. Although Ryda seem to be cheaper, but do not have the 20% off. I do hope that this is not a grey import item, not that it matters as it contains an Australian warranty but I want to claim TRS back. They claim some of their items are grey import but I would like to think they would say so, GST is added to the order so I assume it includes a tax invoice, unless it is a totally different company to Ryda, which operates from the same building.

      • Well, nofrills isn't gray import (whenever I look). Genuine Aust. guarantee. Ryda used to be gray import - stopped looking at them because of that (no guarantee really).

Looks the cheapest way to get that 20mp sensor. Has around 2/3rds of a stop more dynamic range than a 6DII according to Photons to Photos.

Or Panasonic DC-GX9 (12-32mm & 45-150mm)$1598 in jbhifi or $923.88 with this deal, or $831 with TRS. Also many similar deals with the lumix range! Thats a big saving if you were contemplating paying retail store prices and are going overseas! https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Panasonic-DC-GX9-12-32mm-45-150m…

  • I know very little about cameras or smartphones. How would photos taken on this compare to photos taken on a modern smartphone like the S9 or Pixel 3?

    • +2

Smartphones generally have better smarts to make up for the smaller sensor. Camera will be better in general even in low light imo. But the best camera is the one with you.

You'll get a better picture quality with a camera like this than a smartphone, but the primary advantage is when it comes to lenses. That's where a dedicated camera comes into its own

I was asking the same questions, and wondering if I should upgrade my phone rather than camera. Smartphones are a great camera because they are always with you but I dont think they have reached the point of replacing a proper camera just yet. Maybe they do replace those small point and shoot cameras if they don't have a good zoom though. It depends on what someone wants I guess. I wish I could replace a camera with a phone but I looked at the Huawei mate 20 pro which was meant to be the best phone camera and I was impressed with how many megapixels but there was lots of noise in the photos I played with, some photos look a bit like a painting. I compared photos online and even old cameras ive owned, and many old photos from cameras look better than smartphones. But it depends on what someone is looking for in a camera for basic photos smartphones are great and its definitely better than nothing.
