Best BYO Phone Deals? (Under $30)

Hey guys,
Just recently bought a new phone as the speaker on my old one gave out and realised my SIM wasn't a Nano so along with a new SIM I decided it was time to upgrade to a better plan.

I'm looking for a plan along the lines of <10 GB of Data, Calls and Texts not necessarily needed but don't mind either way.
Anything under $25 would be preferred for monthly. But up to $30 is acceptable.
If you can recommend me any particular brands/company's to avoid and which ones are good would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much!

you can cut the sim to the nano size.

some mobile phone shops have a special "hole" punch to do it.

otherwise I've used scissors to cut it down.

have a look at the ozbargain mobile phone deals

    • I was actually hoping to switch plans to be honest mate as my current is 1gb data and calls and texts for 22$/month which isn't optimal as I was hoping for a bit more data at the same cost just need a decent plan on good coverage

kogan mobile is good value at 35-50% off
get 1 month for $5 (or wait until free) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/394895
    get 13-15gb a month for 12 months $205 ($17 pm) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/425253

sometimes these plans go on buy one get one free so 50% off, and they are fantastic value then
vodafone network, data cuts off when you use it up rather than extra charges

    • I know other people seem to be fans but I've found the data component of the Vodafone network to be a bit flaky. By that I mean that I mostly have reception but downloading stalls a lot - no download activity, web pages won't load, apps won't load data, etc. I don't have this problem for the same sites/apps on the same phone with Telstra or Optus.

      • Where I am, and the phone I'm using atm, it's the complete opposite.
Vodafone is the fast stable network, and Optus keeps dropping out.

Can't wait for this catch connect experiment to end so I can get back to Kogan.

        • Interesting. I'm about to go the other way - activating my Catch Connect deal next week. But I had Optus before Kogan (and Telstra before that) so I should be fine in the areas I frequent. Telstra was definitely the most consistent for me out of the three so I'm definitely going on one of the new Boost deals after Catch.

          • @dazweeja: Yeah it's an issue with my Xiaomi phone and location. It only has access to 3 of the 5 Optus LTE bands where as on Kogan it has full coverage of all bands.
So partially a device issue rather than a network issue.

Our home location also means that the closest mobile tower is Vodafone with both Telstra and Optus being almost twice as far away.

And that new Boost deal is so tempting. Personally don't have the need for the international calls but it would be nice to have access to a volte enabled network.

  • Whistleout has a good site to narrow down options - -> https://www.whistleout.com.au/

But why not ALDIMobile (uses Telstra network) $99 year - unlimited calls & SMS-MMS within Aus + 1GB data each month - or $249 year - same as the other but has 80GB data

1GB a month did me well on my phone as I have NBN at home so only use mobile data when I'm out.

  • Spintel - $26/month 10gb.

    Optus network

  • this is current best for 3 months, will need to change after that though:
    catch connect
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/432849

  • $30, 20gb (will be 35gb for the first 5 recharges). Boost, so on the Telstra network. Will last 28 days.

    DATA ROLLOVER
to use in next recharge if you recharge before expiry

    UNLIMITED Calls & Text
    to standard numbers

    UNLIMITED INTERNATIONAL
standard calls & text to 20 selected destinations +100 standard mins & text to 35 selected destinations

    MUSIC STREAMING
    Stream Apple Music Data Free

Their $10 option's unappealing, seeing as it only lasts 7 days. Don't believe Telstra has anything better for prepaid. Can't speak for any other carriers because I haven't used them.
