Yeah the real deal is great… Sugar is a killer for me though.

      • Isnt maple syrup low gi?

        • +1

          It's still sugar.

          • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: I visited the Maple Syrup museum in Québec city once - they claimed maple syrup is nutritionally healthier than sugar cane or that HFCS gunk that the Yanks put in everything.

NB: As pointed out, this is maple 'flavoured' - diluted with regular sugar. "pure" maple syrup is sold in Woolworths but 3 times the price.

            • +1

@pcox: Roundup is healthier than HFCS! :P

            • -1

              @pcox:

I visited the Maple Syrup museum in Québec city once - they claimed maple syrup is nutritionally healthier

So you went to about the most biased people possible and heard their health claims that sugar is unhealthy except for when it's in maple syrup because "reasons".

              • +1

@Diji1: Products list dietary composition for things such as fibre, sodium, carbohydrates, fat, calorie count etc

And per serving, maple syrup was ahead on several metrics.

Bias or reasons, eat it for taste!

              • @Diji1: so what is maple syrup. The ingredients just say 100% maple syrup.

            • @pcox: "nutritionally healthier" is misleading and quite stupid given its maple syrup.

              1. You would need to eat a lot of it to make a difference.
              2. At that level, the sugar will give you health problems
              3. Any possible nutritional benefit is tiny compared to literally anything else.

Sugar is still sugar, it doesn't matter where the sugar comes from, your body processes it the same way.

              • @samfisher5986: The claim was that maple syrup was healthier than cane sugar based on the chemical composition.

Just as you might read the fine print on boxes of cereal per 100g or margarine vs butter.

In this case, you have the choice of 'pure' maple syrup vs maple syrup "flavoured" which has been diluted with standard sucrose because the cost of production is cheaper.

                • @pcox: No

You have the choice of pure sugar

or flavoured water with maple flavour, which is sugar free.

          • @mickeyjuiceman: Yes but you do understand the difference between low gi? It makes a difference

    • +2

Dude you need to go to Costco.

OP however has sugar free syrup.

  • +27

Bought it on special, don't like it at all. Real Canadian maple syrup or nothing IMO.

    • +9

You realise this is sugar free right?

Kind of hard to compare to real maple syrup when its essentially pure sugar.

      • +14

Look at the crap in the ingredients! I’d prefer pure sugar thanks

        • +2

The only potentially abnormal thing there is preservatives.

Otherwise its just thickened, flavoured water.

      • +3

Well aware. Hoped it might taste decent but it has a horrendous after taste. Better off having the real thing, a little bit of sugar wont kill you and you dont need much.

        • +3

Unless you're type 1 diabetic…..won't kill you but will send you high af

      Real Canadian maple syrup

Nothing like a modern cartel to get you your fix

      • eh?

          • @spaceflight: We seem to import the Canadians stuff - I haven't seen syrup from Vermont here in Melbourne, so I suspect it's only consumed domestically in the USA.

            • @pcox: I'm not sure where I said anything about Vermont maple syrup.

I linked to the Canadian cartel page.

The cartel supplies 77% of the world's maple syrup.

              • @spaceflight: Much of world's sugar maple trees are on the other side of the border in Vermont, New England.

If you want to avoid the Canada 'cartel', tracking down USA sourced maple syrup is your alternative.

sorbitol is a sugar alcohol which can have a laxative affect

worth reading the reviews of these sugar-free gummi bears for what to expect:
    https://www.amazon.com/Albanese-Candy-Assorted-Sugar-Free-Fl…

    • +4

Those gummi bears contain maltitol which is totally different. Maltitol is nasty and will seriously give a lot of people the shits if they eat a lot of it.

      • Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol found in fruits and plants with diuretic, laxative and cathartic property. Unabsorbed sorbitol retains water in the large intestine through osmotic pressure thereby stimulating peristalsis of the intestine and exerting its diuretic, laxative and cathartic effect.

As is the case with other sugar alcohols, foods containing sorbitol can cause gastrointestinal distress.

Maltitol (also know as 4-O-α-glucopyranosyl-D-sorbitol) may also be listed as sorbitol or xylitol.

Maltitol is broken down into glucose and sorbitol in the stomach.

Maltitol is particularly demonized regarding gastric side effects because it is so easy for food producers to use it in vast quantities (due to its amazingly sugar-like properties) so consumers often end up consuming far more than they could most other sugar alcohols. While this is a major problem with maltitol, many sugar alcohols are far more likely to cause gastric distress than maltitol when compared gram-for-gram.

      • Correct, despite the cut and paste reply you got.

    • Not really, you would need a lot. This is not maltitol.

Given that maple syrup is mostly sugar, this is ridiculous.

What next? Alcohol-free vodka? Fat-free butter?

    • +1

      errr Coca Cola isn’t?

    • +13

Great for us diabetics. World doesn't resolve around you.

      • -2

        But it does around you?

      • Genetic weakness will be our ultimate downfall.

    • +4

      Alcohol-free vodka

      It’s called mash potato.

  • +4

Doesnt taste good at all, very artificial taste.

  • Thanks.
I actually found out about this product in a diabetes magazine at the doctors.

  • +2

That's the only sugar free one I've found which is nice in taste. This makes the pancake day awesome!

  • +3

As an ex-pat Canuck this makes me very sad.

  • +4

    Good for my keto diet.

    • Yep, it's excellent for that, indeed.

    • Something called a "sugar alcohol" is good for keto?

      • Most likely not 'Good', just usually is in mostly better than the real thing really.

In theory Sugar alcohols are not meant to be processed by the body, so they should be OK. (But can cause lower intestinal issues as others have mentioned)

In reality, they all usually have some effect, but the amount varies by the person and the sweetener used. The only real way is to test for Ketones before and after eating each of the products to see how much they effect you. (Maltitol and Sorbitol have bad reputations).

This is lime labeling an Aussie sparkling wine as “Champagne-style wine” despite not originating from that region in France.

    • Where is the Maple region of Canada?

      • +1

There are maples growing outside parliament house in Act… Maybe the natural flavourings are derived from Australian maples, feed by the finest supply of hot air this great nation has to offer.

  • Definition of an oxymoron….sugar free Maple Syrup.

    • Proper Canadian maple syrup is on special as well, but I'm after sugar free… The real deal is delicious though.
