Careful with the labels on these guys. There's a US and an International version of the unit. The US one lets you use any label you like (using the holes to guide it) whereas the international one uses a barcode on the back of the label to control printing.

I got stuck with a whole stack of very specific sized labels that the International label printer doesn't like :(

If you're curious about it, I did a writeup of it here: https://blog.duklabs.com/dymo-labelwriter-region-locked-labe…

    • Thanks, didn't realise that so that is interesting to know!

For the 4XL in particular, I bought it from Amazon and bought these 3rd party 104mmx159mm labels and they have worked fine.

    • Can you actually tell these Amazon one are US models or international models?

    • We purchased ours from Staples AU (now Winc.) which I can only assume is the international model and it works fine with 3rd party labels.

    • Yes this is true but you can get third party labels with barcodes on the back very cheaply.

    • As with many things in the US, you'll probably find there's some kind of patent on using black marks for detection, owned by someone else, so Dymo use the inferior detection method for those US units. If they were "region locking" units, why do the official Dymo labels have both notches AND timing marks? The issue is US aftermarket label manufacturers not following the proper spec because they don't care about outside US markets.

Timing marks in theory allow for much better control - can see if labels are coming out crooked, if a label gets jammed mid-print etc.

I've got a Turbo 400 that I use cheap labels I get from eBay Australia. They all have printed timing marks. I guess you just have to be careful buying direct from USA for those hard to find ones.

  • Kinda off topic but can anyone recommend a label maker that I can use to label the different light switches in my house?

    • Their position relative to the lights they control is not sufficient?

      • You might be surprised to know that in some houses their placement is utterly illogical beyond your wildest dreams. Usually in eighty to hundred year old houses that have had odd extensions because cables get run through whatever door frame, skirting board or internal(!) cavity wall was convenient.

Doesn't help if you've got a light wired in at three switches either. Or if you have groups of 4+ switches all over the house and some are rarely used.

To answer the question though: dymo label makers

    • I've been through a few Dymo label makers (the tape ones) and ended up deciding to try a Brother one. They're all pretty much the same, though the brother one I got is a slightly better experience (but I did shell out for one of the top models rather than a standard low end one)…

      • That's interesting.
I bought Epson Wireless (mobile) label printer LW-600P.
Then I realised software is really bad.

I bought similar model from Dymo (bluetooth) Dymo Mobilelabeler just to realise Dymo software is even worse.

Now I completely lost my trust in humanity label makers.

If you are saying Brother is a light in a tunnel…
        I am interested. :)

        • I wouldn't go that far to say it's a light at the end of a tunnel, but it's definitely an improvement :P

It works though, which is nice I guess.

I too have lost faith in humanity providing good products :|

  • I have a dymo labeller and it's really handy. The only thing with the advertised one is that it doesn't say how it's powered. That was the same with mine, which uses 6 x aaa batteries, no power supply included. I'm guessing this may be the same, unless it is powered via usb? I doubt it.

The Dymo 4XL is powered via power cable and plugged into a computer via USB to use.

  • Expired. Back to full price.

  • I've had a Dymo Turbo for years. Love it. I sell a lot of my old toys on eBay and this beats writing out addresses by hand.

Plus, it's never wrong. I've had many items sent to me go missing for a few days because of poor handwriting.

  • When choosing labels the 4x6 is the same as 104x159 for some funny reason my printer only shows 4x6 but people sell the labels as 104x159.

Tip for printing auspost and ebay lables - For the 1744907 4x6 or 104x159 labels scale to 90 when printing and it will print the whole label without cutting the edge off.

I buy the cheap ebay ones and never had a problem but they come with the barcode on the back.
