Why didn't think about this when I was learning English?

      • +7

You need to work on your spelling. It's Engrish.

      Pen pineapple

    • Thanks jv, you made my day!

One tenth of the price and more practical.

    • +33

Is that price per month though?

You need to compare apples with apples

      • Are we comparing apples with apples or pencils with pencils ??

        • +1

          apple pen with pineapple pen

Do you mean I can actually enjoy this revolutionary device for only $0.0258333333333333 a month?

    • And you get one a month!

      guess you save $1

Not really, it depends on the opportunity cost of the money…

      • +10

Exactly, imagine the bargains you might miss by not having the cash available!

        • +11

I’d invest in Eneloops and high yield BMWs

      • The NPV ie time value of money?

        • That too, but by paying up front, you are tying up your money…

    • You haven't even factored in the interest earning opportunities this includes.

You could make up to $4 in interest over the 24 months you get to hold the total cost of the apple pen, invested at 3%.

  • The link provided requires an existing post paid Telstra account.

    • fixed thank you.

  • The Apple Pencil is a truly amazing product as far as styli go, I am using one right now.
But first, you must have an iPad, and in this case, a Telstra account.
And be able to afford the Apple Australia Tax.

    • I am actually really on the hunt for one and have just posted the best price I could find for it (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/442237).
I've just bought a 2018 9.7' iPad and I am still studying if I will actually benefit from this pen other than just highlighting text.

      • It’s great if you’re using an iPad Pro for art, sketching, or complex diagrams.

The drawing experience for me (primarily sketching up diagrams) is at a whole other level than the stylus that came with my X1 Carbon.

But it’s a niche use case. If you just want to highlight text, get some $5 capacitative stylus.

      • Marking up PDFs and images etc,, signing PDFs (in fact anything PDF) and writing documents on the bus in any text (better than typing on our roads!) are the best uses I have for the pencil. Drawings, and the ability to shade is almost like using a HB on paper. In fact hard to beat for those purposes.

    • Don't forget the Telstra Tax

  • +22

This is probably the dumbest deal I've ever seen.

    Bravo and thank you.

  • This is a joke right? It's a stylus pen and Apple is charging $144+ for it? Doesn't it even do anything remotely exciting that no other stylus Will do?

    • +14

Inside the Apple Pencil there are a lot of sensors and wireless communication module. It can sense the slightest motion of your finger, and transmission all these physics parameters to iPad via Bluetooth. There is even a ARM Cortex-M3 micro-CPU inside.

With all these sensors, iPad can then make prediction about the motion of your pencil tip, thus minimize the delay between your hand motion and drawing line appearing on screen to near zero. It can also measure the pressure and touch angel of the tip so that drawing software can mimic the touch of real painting brush.

It's actually an impressive piece of tech and price not as farfetched as other premium models. Everyone seems to love it for a reason.

      • +2

Seems like a little overkill to me but each to their own.

        • +5

It can sound like a lot, but I have a few designer friends who previously have dropped over $1,000 each on a Cintiq and have now moved to using these pencils. If you already own an iPad it's a bargain.

        • +1

If you’re not doing complex sketching, then it’s overkill. But some people do. It’s for them.

      • +2

"Everyone seems to love it for a reason."

        Marketing.

        • +2

Is it the superior design, specs and experience of the device?

          No, it's the marketing!

          • OzbargainRehab
    • You also need to charge it unlike others and can easily snap if you don't use the included (that's a first from Apple) charging adapter. It also rolls off the table which is freaking annoying.

      • Yes, all issues fixed in pencil two, but then of course you need the latest iPad Pro to charge the pencil 2.

        • LOL. but great information for those who are interested.

  • +22

    A pencil on contract lmao

  • +2

Do they have the 2nd gen pencil?

  • +3

I have an iPad mini does this mean I should be looking into buying in Apple pencil stub?
Should I be able to buy one for $3 a month?

    • +2

Just buy this one and put it in a sharpener for a while, Telstra has a plan for the new Apple iSharpen™ at only $4 a month. Don't be the only person without one.

      • Don’t be fooled, there is no Apple iSharpener, there is Apple Pencil mini though. Apple won’t let you get away with one size fit all.

  • Does it come with a free iPad Pro?

  • +12

If you can't save up $144, you have a problem.

  • +9

"For only TWO YEARS"… it's a stylus… two year contract for a stylus.

  • Hey OP I know this is mostly a joke but the Apple pencil is really good. It would be nice if it was cheaper but it's functionality and performance are 10/10 (battery life 6/10 haha).

Online warriors: Millions of people able and willing to pay for premium products that they enjoy using are fools. How dare they enjoy something I don't.

Apple panboy detected. It's like a cult, once you are too far in, you can't say anything bad about it so you don't look stupid for having spent so much money.

        • +1

I guess you don't see the irony in your own comment. I’m perfectly happy criticising Macs and comfortable claiming I do not own one and likely never will as they are just not right for me or my intended use. I'm quite happy going the Surface Pro route.

I am, however, quite a fan of the superior iOS experience and more than happy to pay premium for premium iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch etc hardware as it suits me and my use and the subjective value they provide. I fail to see how this is cult-like behaviour to pick and mix what suits me, beyond the idiotic rhetoric. To each their own, belittling people because they choose something different is idiotic.

  • +2

When will they release Apple Sharpener ?

Paying $7/month for a stylus for 24 months seems excessive.

    • it's actually $6/month. This extra dollar would increase its cost by $24

      • +1

Yes but you could put that $144 in a bond with 7% pa returns :D

Haha oops. Paying $6 a month for 24 months seems excessive.

        • it might be excessive in the purpose of the payment, but the final cost is actually cheaper than most retailers.

But I'd hate to be reminded for 24 times that I am still paying for a stylus lol

  • I knew the comment section would not disappoint :)

  • +4

Just feels wrong paying off a pencil over two years. If our ancestors could see us now they would surely vomit a little.
