Stumbled on another decent offer from Futu whilst i muddle over what card to replace my ageing RX480 with. Still on fence, but some may have more conviction to nab this. In particular the base card seems like a good deal to me.

  • Decent deal.

  • Decent deal indeed.. hoping this will put some more downward pressure on gpu prices to the point where I can comfortably spend $300 on a 2ndhand 1070 - think that will possible soon?

    • +1

Yes, people are already paying less than that on eBay. I recently bought a 1070 for $325.

    • Damn, I sold my 1070 4 months ago for $300 and thought it was a good price…

      • I sold my 1 year old 1070 for $400 3 months ago.

But it was a higher tier one (galax exoc snpr)

    • Just got a 1070 a week ago for $300 on eBay, came to $264 after discount code. It was a good deal though, other cards were $330+.

    • I bought a 1070ti for $250 like a week ago lol
just keep searching and haggle em down. dropped it from $350

is 1660 the next gen of 1060??

    • +14

      Who knows mate.

      • +14

clearly u wont cos u don't even know where you put your socks

    • Yea it is i think its around 40% faster than the 1060. The 1660 has no RTX cores aimed at the midrange market.

      • -5

I just had a quick read

It's actually the next gen of 1050Ti, the next gen of 1060 is 2060

    • The GTX 1660 is a sidestep in the topwise direction for the chain hierarchy topology set out in the nVidia model roadmap diagram.

  • Havent read up on these yet. What are the main differences between the base and the Gaming OC? Would these perform on par with a 1070?

    • +1

Increased GPU clock and better cooling i believe. In between 1070 amd 1070TI depending on game / res from what i read.

    • Sure

    • +1

From reviews I've seen it trades blows with the 1070, sometimes faster sometimes slower.

  • +1

I’d go for something a little more substantial to replace an RX 480. It’s only a 40% improvement to a 1660 Ti. I like to get at least 50% more performance out of an upgrade. An RTX 2060 might be more appropriate.

    • Thanks. Yeah I'm leaning that way after a read tonight. Just need the good brands to drop.

      • +3

        Wait for Navi IMO

        • +3

Why not just wait for Navi's successor?

        • I want amd to suceed if only to put a check on nvidia.

But just look at the shitshow that is the radeon 7 released just recently.

    • I picked up my Gigabyte RTX 2070 for $620 plus a copy of battlefield and a $20 Coles gift card
Card is fantastic. This was a Computer Alliance special on boxing day. Gigabyte offered the gift card and game
SO hopefully this price comes up again soon, would recommend

To the questions on where this lies performance wise:
It's pretty much on par in most regards to a 1070, falling only slightly behind, but is priced cheaper.
    It's better than a 1060, and Radeon's 580 by far.
A few reviews point at the 2060 as being the better buy if you can afford the difference, but otherwise these are priced at a better bang-for-your-buck than then 1070.
    Hope that helps!

    • Also better than the RX 590, while nipping at the heels of the Vega 56 (at least at 1080p and 1440p).

For Turing optimised games like Wolfenstein II, it's at the heels of the 1080, which is a good sign of future performance.

    • It's only slightly behind a 2060 in terms of FPS https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/02/22/nvidia-gtx-1660-…

Another source to figure out "best bang for buck": https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/ (Make sure you pick "Best value for money GPU" in the dropdown)

FYI: RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 TI hold the top 2 spots.

Pick a suitable budget or minimum requirements for games or apps, then pick one from the top 10 and you can't go too wrong.

    • thanks for sharing that site!!!

    • Kind of telling that the 1070 and 1070ti both still have better value than the 2080 and 2080ti, even with their release pricing from two years ago. New generation hasn't delivered value at the high end.

      • Flagships are pretty much never the best value.

        • Yeah, but usually when you go forwards a generation all of the new ones have a big jump in power so they all become better value than last generation, not just the mainstream cards. This time though all the prices went up with the performance so the value didn't get better.

          • @Alzori: That doesn't happen anymore with computer parts.

Doesn't happen with mobile phones either.

            • @lostn: It happened with the GTX 10 series, it's a pity they dramatically increased the price this generation.

              • +1

@Alzori: Lack of real competition causes this.

      • You're paying for the expensive next gen tech (ray tracing / DLSS), rather than increased current gen performance. Whether it's worth it is up to you.

        • Those features aren't worth it yet because of lack of software support. Next gen maybe.

Also there's a huge performance hit when you turn on RTRT.

  • How does it compare to a 1080?

    • When games are optimised for Turing it will be close to neck and neck, but at the moment it compares more favourably against a 1070.

This card is built as an RX 590 and Vega 56 competitor (at least until Navi), and it trashes one on performance and both on efficiency.

  • For those interested last weeks Tekthing podcoast gives nice overview of 1660 cards

  • Will there be a 1680?

Also why did they jump from 1060 to 1660? Why not 1160, 1260, 1560?

    • +1

Here is one answer to that from nVidia:

      Why the name?
“As far as naming goes, and why 16 series instead of just using 11? Quite simply, we felt that from an overall architecture and performance perspective, TU116 is closer to the other TU10x parts than it is to prior generation GP10x. TU116 has most of the Turing architecture features, including the new dedicated cores for INT32 and FP16 operations, and it also has all of the new Turing shading features, including variable rate shading and mesh shading. And as you see, performance is closer to the GeForce RTX 2060 than it is to the GeForce GTX 1060. In fact just like you said, it performs closest to the GTX 1070, beating it in some games and losing some others. So we ultimately settled on 1660 Ti instead of 1160 Ti. ‘16’ is closer to 20, after all.”

      In other words, marketing BS.

      • Well that makes it difficult next gen then.

If we're going to use their nomenclature, 2060 is almost double in number 1060, so should we expect almost double the performance?

  • Can some one please explain why you get this one over a 2060 other than the price?

    • +3

Of course, the price is the only reason. It's a lot cheaper than 2060.
If you can find a 2060 having the same price, we will all go get 2060.

    • +1

Price. 2060 needs to be down around $450 to be better value imo (which is what i'm hanging for).
