110

Not the cheapest but it might interest some of us given the standard price is $329 at most places

If this is the 16gb version…aren't you basically paying $100 just so the controller is bundled.

    • +1

      It is the 16GB version.

Any how this with remote was going for $183.20 around Christmas last year. What a rip this $278 price is.

      • There was a Nvidia Black Friday offer that was passed on everywhere… not exactly a fair comparison IMO.

        Maybe Xmas too…. can't recall.

        • Yeah but this so called "on special" price is crap in comparison to what was around Black Friday.

          • @hollykryten: When the supplier has discounted it and others pass it on that's hardly something to get too excited about as well… they are just doing what they should be.

This 'special' is atleast the retailer doing something on their own…

Not saying the price is great, but it's a different scenario.

        • You were able to buy it (16GB with controller) for $220 AUD from Amazon US for several years before it officially launched here. I know again it’s not the same since there’s been currency fluctuations but it was pretty steady at that price for a long time.

          • @skittlebrau: I bought 3 off the US site originally, and asked Nvidia nicely for 3 plugs which they sent for free too :)

            • @scuderiarmani: Same here. NVIDIA customer support sent me a power supply and no plug (in a giant box) and then they sent another parcel with the Australian plug-end.

              • @skittlebrau: @skittlebrau / @scuderiarmani Would you mind explaining how to contact nvidia (Australia) to request for this please?

  • Not the cheapest?

Any other almost bargains you got up your sleeve?

    • Just over a week earlier it was going for $183.20 delivered from another seller which was an even better deal. Refer to my message above.

      • +1

That deal was for the model which doesn't include the controller, just the remote. As OP mentioned, $278 isn't the hugest discount, but it normally retails for $329.

        • Oh yeah i made a mistake.

      • +1

Where was it that price over a week ago? Why didn't you post the deal, have been searching for a deal for months now

  • Guys, is this a true chrome cast device, meaning you can chrome cast mirror and from media streams?
As I find roku and fetch TV will only accept chrome cast from apps it has on device eg netflix youtube, as where true google chrome cast will accept casting from chrome browser tab, mirror phone etc
    Any advise appreciated
    Cheers

I just opened chrome and cast the chrome settings tab and twitter to my shield TV.

  • I'm sure there may be a better deal elsewhere coming along.

  • Is this worth it over another cheaper Android TV box like the Foxtel Now Box?.

    • From what I understand, the benefits of this over most other Android TV boxes is the Plex format support. Apparently the Shield is the only media player which can support direct streaming of native audio formats which normally get transcoded on other devices. The big drawcard here is the Shield's ability to pass through DTS-X and Dolby Atmos to your receiver which apparently no other device can do.

      • Couldn't you just use PKC and enable audio passthrough in Kodi though?

      • Can use Plex on the Foxtel Now box. And as far as i know it supports direct streaming of native audio formats. I have one here which i use. I don't know about DTS-X and Atmos.

    • +1

If you want to just use it as a traditional Android box its not worth the extra expense. You might as well get the Vodafone TV.

BUT, this is also a games platform and can be used as a Plex server. If you are interested in either it is well worth it.

      • +1

Yeah I haven't touched my raspberry pi since I got my shield. The emulation is so much better. Plus there's Steam Play, and nVidia's streaming game service (which is a little laggy in AU depending on the type of game you want to play).

Its running the proper Android TV, so it is easier to navigate with the remote. Some of those cheaper android tv boxes are just normal android with a custom launcher, so you get into an app and it is designed for touch, so you get frustrated trying to navigate with the remote.

Ooh and nvidia has a built in network drive mounter too. So you can mount your SMB shares and have them available to all apps just as a folder in the filesystem.

        • I use a Foxtel Now box and it does use proper Android TV. It's only Android TV 7 though.

    • Imo this is an amazing device but not worth its hefty price tag if you are living in AU. The Geforce Now gaming feature is just about unusable here as there are no local servers and the Android based games available on Play Store to buy are very limited.
As a plex/media player or server it is legit and is a very snappy and slick experience.
As a basic media player or emulated games player its over kill… a MiBox or VodaTV will be more than enough and a third of the price.
One plus is it does have Amazon Prime video app but that isn't a massive feature to me.
Also if you google "nvidia shield problems" you will see many people having countless issues with this so called "premium device".
      Hope this helps.

Only 4 left in stock (so can't be posted as a deal) but it is only $249 shipped from Amazon.

Note there is no controller with my link above.

    • +3

Not a good deal though at all if you want the controller because they will set you back $89 if purchased separately.

Also $249 with remote only is the standard RRP for it. So it's not a deal at all really.

  • Are there cheaper android tv options which are stable and do 4k (don't care for a controller)? I hear the miboxes need regular reboots etc.

    • i've got a Mi Box S…rebooted maybe 3 times since December? Otherwise i just put it to sleep after each use. It's been a pretty solid product for us outside of Stan not working when cycling through the inbuilt app but casts from our phone to the AndroidTV fine.

    • I bought one of these: Mecool M8S PRO L

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Mecool-M8S-PRO-L-4K-TV-Box-A…

Runs android TV OS and does 4k but possibly not for everything - tested 4k via kodi, direct file playing, etc. ok…

I believe netflix is HD but not 4k… not tested that or others as I don't have an account for them..

  • Dying for the one without controller, but Centrecom had it for $180 during Christmas and I missed it. $225 now and I'm tempted but holding out for another NVIDIA sale, any ideas when the next one will be?

  • Why you need these (android box, apple tv, shield), if your TV is already a smart TV capable of streaming and casting Netflix, Stan, Prime and such?

    • It is also somewhat of a gaming device and can be run as a Plex server. I beleive it will also run all of your more intensive apps such as Kayo Sports smoother than your Smart TV.

    • +1

Well it depends on how finicky you are about certain things like codec support in Plex/Kodi, extra control over refresh rate & colour-space switching, long-term support (Smart TV manufacturers are remarkably shithouse in this department) for OS updates and just generally a more fluid UI.

Smart TVs are fine for most people, but I find the lack of control and fine-tuning of things like the above very frustrating.

  • really hoping for a $180 deal soon without controller.

pretty keen to watch the footy via kayo
