Yeah I don't think the XPS range is aimed for gaming, they make excellent productivity laptops the combination of a 4K screen a decent graphics card and its small size make it awesome for like you said video editing but also for programming related tasks.

I have a 4K screen on my laptop with a 960m, the higher resolution and GPU are very useful for designing 3D objects. It's also capable of some light 3D gaming, not run at 4K, but 1080p.
I have the 9370. I agree the 4k is too much for the screen size. More so for the battery life - it's not designed for gaming at all. But an awesome laptop, the fibre glass surface on the inside is amazing.
The 9370 is a 13" not a 15" so there's a bit of a difference there…
I really hate that high refresh is only ever used as a gaming feature, having used both 1440p high refresh and 4k, going to lower resolution is a small adjustment, but going back to 60hz just makes me want to vomit in my mouth

The Dell XPS 15 is notorious for quality control issues. I bought one locally 2 years ago and had to return it twice for keyboard and screen issues. Nonetheless great price for this configuration.
I can confirm this. Own a 9560 which had mother board replaced twice due to GPU issues.
Advice would be to purchase the "Premium Support warranty" stated by OP for the warranty transfer.
I can confirm this too. Had mine with GPU issues as well. It appears that the GPU was not installed properly, which caused heating issues. Dealing with Dell customer service was a pain in the @ss. Luckily, I bought it from their Dell Ebay shop and Ebay did the refunding process without any questions.

I reached into outlet, but all 9570 miraculously disappeared. I am sure though they are under $2k every now and then. Discrete graphics are almost useless in a laptop this class, and 9570 models without one start from $1400 with local 1yr warranty.

@Pricebeat: tired. I have seen so many "deals" in laptops lately that suck so bad, whatever happened to ozbargain. overpriced deals, "throwaway money" deals, crappy unapgradeable specs deals. I can't believe people think they are getting a good deal? obviously 9570 are all gone from the outlet because they really were a good deal, also there was additional 10% off lately, that's why they are not there.
and I explained already, that refurbished XPS is no different from new, and if it is, anything can be replaced, you just have to ask for it.

@Pricebeat: Just going to chime in here but @kasaresj is right. The Dell Outlet often has better deals, laptops are typically brand new (I've purchased 6 separate devices over the years for people that have all been new), and come with local warranty. In one particular instance, I actually purchased a 9550 for my Dad that came with 2 years extended warranty for the device.
The Dell Outlet, particularly when there's 10% off sales, is literally the best place to purchase decent computer hardware.

Where does xps line dells fall relative to latitude and inspiron??
Just a home user. Gaming days are behind me but having some average gfx but decent hdd and ram space to accommodate being used as a personal desktop would be great. Thought having good battery life and portability would be great. The work latitude last upwards of 10 hours so it seems real good. Not sure if xps is the student choice and not necessarily hitting the quality of a serious home user?
The XPS range are Dell's top of the line laptops and desktops (that aren't designed as workstations).
correction: XPS is top of the line consumer laptops and desktops. latitude are your business oriented workhorses, topped by Precision which is reliability above and beyond.
It's not as simple though, because each line has classes (3000, 5000, 7000), apart from XPS (exception!). Inspiron 7000 is almost top of the line consumer, topped by XPS models (cream of the cream), with XPS also encroaching into gaming territory (but are not very convenient for that).
Latitude 5000 is roughly Precision 3000.
However recent Precision 5000 is essentially XPS 15 with better components.
So it's not as linear as it seems :D
Best value for you sounds to be a decent spec'ed Inspiron 5000 or 7000, Latitude are too business like to be relaxed enough for home use. XPS is a good option if you don't mind spending extra cash. They are pleasant to the touch. I wouldn't touch them myself, because to me they're still an expensive toy.

Thanks for the feedback. Somewhat confusing how the different models and classes work as you mentioned i.e. the fact that Inspiron is bottom of the consumers, but the Inspiron 7000 class is closer to the top end of the consumer line.
I guess my main questions are how do you determine if a model suits you? For example, the latitude 5490 I have at work, is described as you mentioned as a ‘business orientated workhorses’. But what determines this business designation vs a consumer laptop that you would recommend for myself? I mean after all it has long battery life, very extensive, which I would have thought is “good” to have as a consumer, but you’ll most likely be plugged in. So is the main difference the fact that business users are more often than consumers not plugged into AC power as a desktop replacement? And hence why a “consumer” laptop is a recommendation as I presume you pay less and get more of other features by forgoing the battery life? Although to me the ‘best’ laptop would have the better battery life and everything else? SO am somewhat confused as to when something is determined to be more ‘business’ than consumer?
I don’t exactly need to ‘game’ , so just decent gfx to process all your day to day usage and the odd ‘media’ would be great. NO latest games and regular gaming intended due to my stage in life (work, busy busy all other times etc.). Definitely used to love my gaming though.
Having had a 15”-15.6” prev they’re great for desktop replacements. But I presume going a 14” or 13” allows the odd ‘portability’ outside the home? Would that matter in whether you go inspiron vs latitude vs XPS?
Otherwise a mix of good build i.e. solid, well functioning keyboards and other buttons , hinges, open/close etc, with weight and power. I haven’t had a SSD before but have heard great things, but am somebody who hoards a fair bit of data e.g. 750gb, 1tb harddrives fill up quick? Would it be too costly to go a large SSD, or are the SSD + a large hard drive (two hard drive) options a reasonable option?
Why is XPS considered an ‘expensive’ toy? Is it kind of like having the latest Samsung s10 versus getting “most” of the same power from a much cheaper Samsung s9 equivalent i.e. getting a higher end Inspiron?
My only other real concern are ports. With some of the laptops closer to $2k so light and ‘sleek’ – they look great, but they have hardly any ports. Hardly any USBs, now adays there aren’t even CD rom drives, so how does one reformat or install certain software? Migrate all to USB sticks?

I guess it comes to what I really need… a workhouse (XPS) or portability (Matebook). My uses were going to be productivity, Photoshop and lightroom work with the side of gaming (CS:GO).
With the screen being 3k/4k not too concerned of that between the two.

I have few generations old XPS 9530 which also has 4K touch screen. Mine is used for at least 3-4 years daily basis and never had a problem. XPS laptops are (at least older generations) regarded as very reliable and mine has proven that so far. No fan issues (it's very quiet despite not been cleaned for quite sometime now) and no heating issues either. Everything works as the day I bought it. Screen is very nice, you literally can't go back to Full HD screen. I think later versions had better screens with wider colour gamut etc. As few others have mentioned, these are for professionals, graphic oriented people or anyone who wants to be seen carrying an expensive and reliable beast of a laptop. But definitely not for gamers. I've run heavy graphic software on mine with no issues but never gamed.
Been using the 9550 with 4K touch for almost 3 years now . Definitely awesome and one of the best I've used or setup in my line of work though not perfect. Using it extensively as a photographer in the field/on location work so editing photos and some video editing work it performs well with good colour accuracy (100% adobeRGB/sRGB)and 4K does make a big difference vs FHD. However like others have mentioned its definitely not designed as a gaming system and would be playing games at FHD to get decent FPS.
The webcam position at the bottom makes it pretty useless and unflattering. The other main issue over time is the battery located underneath the touch pad expands overtime and lifts the pad up causing functionality issues. There was a free battery replacement to fix those issues that expired late last year. I was a bit too late when I found out but around $100 for a new battery off Ebay to replace a 3 year old one isn't bad.

4k on a 15.6 inch laptop with a graphics card that can't run games at a 4k resolution. not worth. you can get 144hz 1080p laptops with a 1060 (and in some cases a 1070) at this price range.
this would be good for video editing/processing at 4k though.
