YouTube Premium INR 129/Month (~AU $2.63) via YouTube India (VPN Required)

11880

Hello all,
Google has finally launched Youtube Premium in India for INR 129(AUD ~2.60) and Family Membership for INR 189 (AUD ~3.80).
Comes with Youtube Music, No Ads in Youtube as well as Google Play Music.

https://india.googleblog.com/2019/03/introducing-youtube-mus…

This cost cheaper that was posted earlier for using Russian subscription option posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414890

I have signed up after cancelling Russian plan with my Macquarie Debit card so no conversion charges.

Everything included in post by @Dealbot applies here too.

Youtube Premium will give you access to -
• Ad-free videos: Watch videos without interruptions
• Save offline: Save videos and songs on your mobile device to watch offline
• Background play: Keep videos or music playing when using other apps or when your screen’s off
• Audio mode: Listen to audio only on the YouTube Music app
• Google Play Music Subscription (when available in your country) is included at no additional cost

Current pricing is $14.99 per month in Australia. This workaround should work for new and existing customers.

Again, the trick to making this work is having access to a VPN service. If you're signed up to one then the rest of the process should be fairly simple.

Instructions -
1. Connect a VPN to the server India (I connected to Bangalore)
2. Click on Paid Memberships(youtube.com), then click on Learn more.
https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships

  1. Enter Indian address and pay by credit card.

Termination takes place under this link(music.youtube.com)

Address line : My Place
Town/City : Mumbai
Postcode : 400070
State : Maharashtra

      • I had the same concern and actually decided to stick with Australian payments to avoid any issues. I had cancelled yesterday (with the service still active until tomorrow) so this morning I went to resubscribe via AU and low and behold I found I had lost my $17.95pm pricing and was being charged the higher $22.95pm. Sooo I went ahead with this VPN method and will shoehorn it into a solution.

No need to delete any addresses when signing up, you're just prompted for a payment method and need to add in an address. It's very straightforward.

        • I'm in the same boat - I am on the $17.95pm grandfathered plan, and very conscious that if the Indian plan would not work out that there's no way back…. it'll be Best of Bollywood Ballads only from now on. Let me know how the shoehorning goes :)

    • Hi, I am interested in doing this for my AU family group too.

I am the family manager hence interested to know if other family members Google Music recommendations will be in Indian.

Would be great if you can clarify when you know.

Although I use Google music and also do not want Indian recommendations haha

I will most probably stick to AU family, we got it at $18 per month and they still charge us that price, for now anyway. i.e. $3 each.

      Thanks in advance :-)

Worked for me - with ING no payment issues and the address I did the same, just auto populated after I typed 1 Ja, did come up saying it was 169 a mth not 129 but checking the transaction it was only $2.64 which is a freaking bargain compared to the full Aussie price! Thanks! Btw just did it on chrome on the iPhone otherwise it couldn't do it as the iTunes account is local and the app tried to do it in that method.

    • Hi, I had the same problem where it does not allow me to sign up because my itunes in australian account, sorry can you explain in detail about using the Chrome? because everytime I click on the link, it will redirect me to the youtube apps on my iphone. So how do you do it on Chrome?

      • Just copy + paste the link in Chrome rather than clicking it

  • I also used the free trial from express VPN available on iTunes.

Ok, that top chart song is kind of catchy

    Chogadatara
    Chabeelatara
    Rangeelatara
    Rangbherujuetarivaat re, HAAH!

    yes I google that

  • Does ad skipping work on android tv?

  • +1

    Thanks OP!
Worked perfectly with my ING card :)

    • +1

      Me too.
Hesitant to get too excited as the true test comes at the end of the free trial period (will it still work?) but it seems this is set to be the bargain of the year.

  • +2

    OP - You're amazing!

  • It might not be relevant to this thread, but could someone tell me if they have successfully signed up to Hotstar Premium in India? I can get to the site via VPN and choose the premium offer, but they don't accept international credit cards.

    • Don't..I did it last year but had problems with watching the content…game of thrones and cricket were all gep restricted and it included all vpn ip addresses.

      • I can access the free content with no issues with Getflix

  • Trying for the family plan on a throwaway with only India payment profile and I can't seem to get any other accounts to join my family group. (tried with 5 accounts, 3 fresh with no payment profiles and 2 with previously non-India profiles but deleted those, all yielded the same results with being in the wrong region)

I tried accepting via VPN too, but it didn't work. Am I missing something? Seem to have tried everything I read on here.

    • working here I added 3 people to my family.

    • I have managed to add one so far, though i had to remove an existing Australian Payment profile and add an Indian one (with an Aussie CC), then accept the invitation whilst connected via VPN for it to work.

  • Can you pay in advance like buy a years worth or two now and not have to worry about it or let it bounce if your bank account has no money around the new bill date cycle.

  • How do you add other gmails to the family to maximise the Family Membership?

  • I am very new to VPN. Which one would you recommend?

    • +1

Express VPN has a free 7 day trial which is all you need and they only require your email address. They also have an app for iOS which is what I used

      • Asked me for payment details whn i went to express vpn

  • +6

too bad about Google Play Music.

I am soooo looking forward to morning chat with my indian colleagues at work.
"hey have you heard the new hit single from Duniyaa?? omg its marvelous!!"

  • Thanks from Agra India! ;)

  • Is there a similar trick for more google cloud storage?

  • Has anyone got this to work using Private internet access (PIA)? When I click find out more, then try it for free (3 month trial) it then continually loads.

    Thanks

    • Yea i did it with PIA india server

  • When accepting Family Invite, Hola and Windscribe doesn't work (unless you have pro). What a recommended VPN to use?
    Thanks.

    • Seems like Tunnelbear worked.

  • Does anyone know how it affects google home devices, my whole house is complete with google home and I already have a family group setup? Thanks

    • Will find out in a month when my google play family plan ends and the youtube india one takes over

  • Thanks OP.
Hope NordVPN works this time, had no luck with Netflix last time.

    • +1

Others had luck with Tunnelbear, so try that if no luck with Nord.

      • Will do, thanks!

  • 796 upvotes wow@!!

  • Cant for the life of me get this to work. Tried with multiple cards and multiple addresses but keep getting invalid payment…..Re the addresses found in your google settings, i assume everyone else has two payment methods now - their australian one and an indian one? Can anyone help?

    • I don't have two payment methods. What exactly are you doing? Just login, use your VPN, click sign up for membership, put in your card, choose a random address, and then click pay. What are you doing?

    • I had the same, but then used a different address and it worked. Used this to get some details: https://www.fakeaddressgenerator.com/World_more/India_addres…

    • +1

My work around was to create a new Google account, use that to get a family account, then invite my normal account as the second user.

  • Do they charge you international fees on a debit card or do they only charge the AUD amount?

Nevermind, found the answer here for others wondering - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/444144?page=2#comment-7053…

  • Wow thanks for posting.

I tried looking up these questions in the comments but started to go blind on my not so smartphone. So apologies in advance if it’s been answered before.

Can someone please let me know:
After signing up for family account
Do I have to give my email and password to family members?
Or I can nominate email accounts and they can use their own email account? ( Hotmail, iCloud gmail etc)

Lastly do I need to have the VPN on to listen and watch YouTube after successfully signing up or VPN is required once off only
Hoping they’ll keep charging the same annual fee in the card once lapses.

    • -2

      Once you've signed into youtube:

      1 - Click on purchases
      2 - Manage membership
      3 - Manage family
      4 - Invite family Member

Then on the family member's device:
1 - Select India on the VPN app of your choice
      2 - Accept the invitation

If you don't have VPN on the family member's device, it'll say something along the lines of not being in teh same area or something like that.

VPN is required only for the initial sign up. Don't forget to turn it off once you've signed up otherwise you'll be getting a lot of Indian channels and etc.

      • +1

All my family accounts activated without needs of VPN.

        • -2

That's not true. Several people here have said that they got the area detection without vpn. I have as well. Thanks for the neg!

  • +1

The best way is to sign up through a desktop using browser. To be on safer side, create a new gmail id and use it. Do not try on mobile or ipads to subscribe. Once you get subscription, feel free to use on any device without any vpn.
One of the sample Indian address is

C-479 Indira Nagar, City- Lucknow, state- Uttar Pradesh (UP) 226016. Replace 479 by any number like 480,481 to get any other house address.

Use any of the international credit card.

    • I just got the individual plan for 129 rupees a month with 3 months trial. I used express VPN app 7 days trial on an iPhone and chrome browser, everything went rather smoothly

    • I used mobile android to sign up using vpn and an existing account. No dramas

  • +1

So what is the need for the Indian address? I used my primary Google account and it worked fine.
Sorry but this is my first time doing this.

  • Do you get Indian content recommendations with this?

  • +2

Anyone using google music and find that the top chart is in India region?

    • +1

yes, only the main account and only Play Music is affected. Switch to Youtube Music then everything is fine

      • +1

I just find that other family member play music top chart is also in India

  • Done! Used CC with Nariman Point, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400021, India address. Thanks to the OP

  • Does this work for netflix https://www.netflix.com/in ?

  • Changed mine now with Tunnelbear extension for browser - took a couple minutes in total.

Yes there are Indian recommendations at least on the desktop browser version but i just searched for a video I watched today and my feed looks pretty much the same now…

Just testing the kids accounts on their tablets with YouTube and YouTube Kids

    THANKS TO THE OP!

  • Tempting but i don’t know why I feel it’s a bad idea because tracking? Am I worried for nothing?
    I normally use https://invidio.us

  • If I have an existing subscription and cancel it and then subscribe to this… Will the new subscription start when the previous one expired?

    • Never mind I used a new account to take 3 months free trial offer.

    Learn about YouTube family plans

Get a YouTube family plan to share a YouTube paid membership with up to 5 other people in your household.
    How the family plan works

A YouTube family plan allows you to share your YouTube paid membership with up to 5 other family members—ages 13 and up—living in the same household (residential address).
As the account holder, or family manager, you'll create a Google family group. You can invite family members to the group to share your YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, or YouTube TV membership with them.
As a family member, you can use your own Google account to access the YouTube paid membership. Your viewing and listening preferences are all your own—you'll continue to see your personal library, subscriptions, and recommendations. These preferences won't be shared across accounts.
Sharing your YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, or YouTube TV membership as part of a family group also lets you share other Google services with the same people. Learn more about family groups on Google.

i am still thinking if I should sign up considering that youtube premium is now 22.99 up from 17.99 that it used to be…If i cancel 17.99 price will be gone

    • +1

I noticed that.. That 20% rise is pretty steep.. I've transferred to the Indian plan but if it gets cancelled I'll be looking for alternatives as $23 a month is too high

      • -1

The trick is to cancel the Youtube membership and sign up for a Google Play subscription wvia https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/accountsettings and you get Youtube Premium for free, and it's only $17.99

        • Good tip!

        • +2

This doesn't work, as a GPM subscription only gives you access to Youtube Music, not Youtube Premium. Old plans where it was included have been grandfathered.

  • Worked perfectly for me from an existing family account. Thank you so much.

    • What address did you use? I'm still failing payment

      • I used a random hotel in Mumbai (top one in Travel Advisor). My credit card did get declined first go. My credit card company sent me a text asking me to confirm the transaction (I was impressed). I confirmed it and then it was all good.

        • Thanks buddy, after an hour. Jeepers!

  • +1

I am so pissed I went for this. I was paying $17.99 for both YouTube premium and music. Now it's gone up to 22.99

EDIT: Thanks to everyone that suggested the YouTube music app. I kinda like it. That doesn't seem to be affected by the Indian recommendations. I am back on board.

    • +1

I'm in the same boat. I was on the cheaper plan before the prices went up.
If for whatever reason this indian hack falls through, we'll have to suck it up and pay the higher price ☹️

It was probably Google's plan all along

      • Lol, I reckon.

I've signed back up via VPN, and YouTube music is fine. Just gotta get the playlists across somehow.

      • -1

I hit this as well, was on $17.99 plan, cancelled, tried this and realised it was too risky to lose my email/phone/photos etc, resigned up for youtube premium and it was $22.99…

The trick is to cancel the Youtube membership and sign up for a Google Play subscription wvia https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/accountsettings and you get Youtube Premium for free, and it's only $17.99

        • Awesome. I tried looking for this. I might stay on the Indian service for a bit.

        • This doesn't work, as a GPM subscription only gives you access to Youtube Music, not Youtube Premium. Old plans where it was included have been grandfathered.

    • Where do you get the Indian recommendations? If you have a Google Assistant speaker with its address set to Australia, does it now gear towards Indian music for anything you ask?

      • In Google Play Music (browse stations).

        YouTube music is unaffected.

        • Are you still using an Indian address here?

I prefer using Play Music because YouTube has a lot of lower bitrate streams…

          • @Make it so: Does removing your Indian address affect anything when it comes to first payment after the trial at all?

            • @Slave1: I haven't gone for this deal yet. I'm worried if it stuffs up the music suggestions for my 3 speakers, I can't go back to my $18/month Oz plan.

  • Considering these type of workarounds get a lot of +votes, any legalities or issues revolving around using these methods for subscription.

  • Thanks Op! Worked a charm!

  • Does anyone know what the login limit is? Can I just use the one login for my family's 3x iPads?

    • +2

You can use same login across any number of devices. But when watchin it gives error and stops if multiple devices streaming at same time.

  • +1

Probably been asked a fair bit but can't seem to locate the answer,
Used throw away account to sign up for the subscription, tried to invite normal account, unable to get it to accept.
Keeps quoting different country to account manager.
Have done with and without VPN and via private browser with no success.
    Any idea?

  • Any one can help? I got "Trouble joining family group Looks like you're in a different country than the family manager.". I used VPN to try to accept the invitation, but got above errors.

    • same here, cannot add family

    • Family members don’t need to changed location (vpn off) just accept invitation straight away.

  • Interesting that my Google Music Play is now full of Bollywood party music.
Any tips on how it can be changed to the Aussie music?

    • Why? There isn't a lot of Aussie music. Most of them are from US and UK.
