M series processors are crap, don't buy

    • +2

They're not too bad, they serve a purpose that is to be very efficient and economical.
Great for all day to day tasks, not ideal for anything that has a moderate or higher frequent or sustained CPU load.
What kills it for me is the 4GB of RAM.
Option to add an SD card internally for bulk low speed storage would be nice, then keep the SSD for apps and anything else needing fast I/O

  • +8

If MS had not made a 4gb model and started at 8gb these would be walking out the door, shame really the M3 is good enough for Office, web browsing etc

    • +1

This needs votes, a single basic truth right here.

  • I'm terrible with computers and I know many of you guys are extremely bright in this area so I wanna ask, is the i5 which is 799 ($80 more than this) worth the price over the $719 m3? I am a uni student with no heavy usage such as gaming and photoshop video editting etc. Thanks in advance!

    • +2

This guy posted a brief walkthrough of this laptop just to give an idea of what to expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_6gUXLFIuw
i5 is obviously more powerful but has to be in stock by tomorrow before the PMIC20 coupon expires to get it at the $799 price. m3 is fanless and has better battery life. Both should be fine for note taking and web browsing

    • +3

i5 processor is definitely better than this M3, but other components affect the laptop running speed too. ssd runs much faster than hdd, and you need 8gb of ram these days, also a full hd display screen is better. Hope that helps

    • +2

Providing you have an M3 or better, other minimums should be 8GB ram and 128GB SSD or more depending on your storage needs.
M series CPU's are quick but with a larger focus on efficiency than the I series CPU's
If the manufacturer pairs them with an appropriate battery they can delivery comfortable 8+ HR realistic run times.

If the I5 has the 8GB/128GB then that's fine too, more performance on tap, but when you ask for that performance it will use more power.

      ::edit::
As Juniormin says, Full HD is the go.
1366x768 and other stupid resolutions like it need to die.
They are just difficult to use and IMO give a decent hit against productivity and all round usability.

      In order of importance.
1080p (poorer resolutions in my personal case lead me to be less likely to even want to power on a machine rendering other specs unimportant)
128GB+ SSD (Fast storage is always a factor, boot times, load time and SSD's use a lot less power)
8GB RAM (Good breathing space for 50 tabs in Chrome)
M series CPU or better, avoid Pentium, celeron, atom etc.. these should just cease to exist, it all starts with M series IMO, and if you can go for I series within your budget then you're laughing.
Difference between I3, 5 and 7 are pretty much irrelevant marketing when ti comes to notebooks, but going from M to I is a great step up.

Absolutely go for the i5, it will be the best $80 you ever spend

    • Thanks everyone! Never seen saw many IT professionals in one place :) will be spending the extra $80 and wait for the next i5 sale

      • +1

Just keep in mind the extra fan noise from the i5 compared to M series ( radiant cooling ) and less battery run time

if pushing it more. Maybe even bigger/heavier power adaptor as i5 needs more power, so unless you need the

extra power for your use, there are some points going against the i5, apart from extra $.

        • +1

          You are certainly right.
That said, and even though i was praising the M3, i'd still lean toward the i5 if the additional cost is minimal, with some conditions.

Those conditions being that if a power profile is setup to run passive cooling only the power draw of the i5 will come down a fair bit to remain in a sensible thermal envelope.
This will also cost a bit of performance, bringing performance down toward the M3, but the upside is more performance can be called on when needed.

This is pretty simple to do, but if it sounds too much and battery life is important above all else then defo the M3

  • Two questions:

Would I be qualified for the Amex reward ($100 back from $600 spend) from this Microsoft eBay . Website is not very clear.
If I pay part using eBay gift card and $600 with Amex, would I still be qualified for the $100 refund ?

    Thank

    • No, the amex offer is for Microsoft website and not for Microsoft Ebay.

    4gb in 2019? Oh wow

    • +1

A basic machine in 2019 should be 8GB minimum and 128GB SSD minimum.
Even 1080p should be a minimum too.

      • +1

It is for premium laptops…not everyone needs this lol.

        • 16GB and 500GB SSD should really be the minimum for premium laptops. Especially given that most of them are soldered and not upgradable.

        • I disagree.
1080p in a lappy isn't hard to do, 1440p and 2160p can be reserved for the premium machines.
That stupid resolution of 1366x768 the plagues cheap laptops is considered by many that know the difference to be unusable.
          It's just that bad.

8GB of modest OEM ram is inexpensive, yet can make a world of difference for the performance and longevity of a budget machine.
16GB would be great, but most can live without that much. It's time the minimum transitioned to 8GB.

SSD's are cheap now, and given the massive impact they have on performance they should be standard.
SSHD (hybrids) would also be passable, but having a mechanical only drive is stupid in 2019.
I wouldn't consider a basic SATA or entry level NVME SSD to be premium.
A 512GB NVME drive or reasonable speed is what should be in a premium machine.

          • +1

@virtual81: Man people these days are so dramatic "considered by many that know the difference to be unusable."

Again, these are premium. You get a much better build, better features in some cases, potential for longer lasting machine. I agree to all your points, but the price point and things I mentioned above have a factor in this.

  • How is this Laptop for $478? I have a quote for that price.
128 GB SSD, 4GB ram, quad core Pentium. Has Windows 10 S but can be upgraded to full Windows 10 for free.

Don’t do it. Pentium Chips are why this comes loaded with Windows S, Like buying an SUV with a 500cc engine… I would move, but would drive you mental, constantly questioning ‘why put a 500cc engine in a car this size’ ?!?!?

Minimum i3, better with an i5, at least 8gb of RAM.

    • Great price for the above listed laptop, how did you get that quote?

For basic use such as web/email/youtube that should work nicely. Quiet, frugal and has usb c ( not for charging itself ) as

well as a micro sd slot. It is thin and light for a 14", screen is usable but obviously a big step down from the Surface.

If your budget is below $600, this is pretty nice looking laptop for the $.

      • +1

It was that price 3 weeks ago and I managed to get a quote. Still have 1 week to make a decision.

once again, this "laptop" is a disposable toy. definitely don't buy the 4gb version with m3, better laptops can be had for the price. yes, none of them will have a comparable screen, but screen is the only pro in the list of pro's and con's here. a decent laptop with a FullHD IPS panel can be had at this price or slightly above.
