Optus Samsung Galaxy S - $29 Cap ($180 Calls + 200MB Data) + 2 Months Free

230

Vodafone/Three & Virgin have dropped the handset to $0 on a $29 and now Opus has finally joined in with its own $29 Cap plan + if you purchase/upgrade on line you will also get 2 months access free.

I am not sure how good the Optus $29 cap compares to other offerings from Vodafone/Three & Virgin, I hope that some knowledgeable OZBargauners here can educate me :)

Cheers

    • We can do without lame insults. Why is it a POS? Software problems are fixable. In fact, isn't the current software OK?
      Might need an OTA update.

More relevant, what is the cost of a data pack? 200MB is not enough but 3 and voda will add 700MB for $4/month.

        optus do a $4.99 500mb pack and a $9.99 1gb pack.
both are month-to-month, so can be picked-up and dropped off with no penalty.

200mb is heaps for normal browsing.

I use about 150mb a month browsing the web on my iphone. To and from work.

        • +1

You must be reading lightweight mobile-versions of the web.
A typical page (e.g. ozb home) is half a MB (more if no adblock!) , so 150MB would be 4 pages per trip x 40.

      • galaxy s is old now, If you get nexus S you will have gingerbread 2.3.4? instead of using samsung ui and stuck with older os version. with 2.3.4, you gain the "facetime" like on gtalk.

        • Galaxy S has a far superior screen and can also run 2.3
Yes it's getting old but the Nexus is gimped in Australia and is at best a small step up from the Galaxy S… arguably roughly the same.

Newer, Dual Core, handsets are here, or very close to being here that will easily outperform the Nexus S in every respect except regularity of firmware updates.

no matter, you can still root it and use a different rom. all you need is the hardware then worry about the platform.. because majority of people have NFI how to fully utilise a smart phone anyway, and ends up calling them a POS.

So what do you recommend ? Iphone 4 on Telstra for $79? = 1896/O24M ?

Please have some constructive comment. Your trolling is fail.

i said if you want 29cap might as well go nexus S on vodafone?

        • +1

          no you said "vodafail"

      • Recommend…?
I have a Sony X10 on a $29 Optus plan and would not recommend it… The call costs are crazy!
I would recommend the Optus 7" Tablet for $150 prepaid (easy as to unlock) and stick another sim in it from another telco with better call charges if you intend to use it a lot for calls.

I think this is a good deal. Virgin still has the $6 handset repayment on top of $29 big cap. I still have 1 month contract with 3 but will switch to Virgin if they have good deal like Galaxy S on $29 cap 0 repayment :)

    • Looking at this too. Virgin give you $450 call credits, with rollover. And free SMS. Same data.

  • Awesome deal, awesome phone!! good price :)

  • Looks like they're getting ready for the Galaxy S2 and hence reducing the plan prices for the Galaxy S. But still I think it's a good deal though.

  • Great price. Great phone for those willing to tinker.

GET A DATA PLAN, or you will be shooting yourself in the foot (or wallet).

200mb is nothing and you can burn that quite easily

    • +1

Yeah, a smartphone without a decent data pack defeats a lot of the purpose. Being tethered to wifi with a mobile device is many kinds of lame.

    • +1

200mb would be barely enough for on the road calendar/contacts/email syncing and very occasional web browsing.
You'd definitely want to be using WiFi for downloading/updating apps and long winded web browsing..

Great phone as I have one. Samsung already released 3 Gingerbread versions (2 official and 1 leaked) that can be installed on the phone.

THere has been hacks to get SIP working natively as well as the new touchwiz from the Galaxy 2 which is working as well.

For the more linux oriented guys now CM7 is near perfect and everything is working on it. You should also have a look at MIUI if you want a new experience on your phone.

  • Check the call rates as you can get badly burnt with some deals. A $450 call allowance can be less than a $50 one with another provider.

  • Thanks guys/gals for the positive feedbacks. I have decided to upgrade my current “Fusion Plus 20” with this deal. Can’t wait to get my hands on the SGS (my very first mart phone :).

According to this Wirlpool thread: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1694471 , Optus my release Gingerbread (2.3) software for the SGS soon, so I may wait a bit longer to see how the official software doing before heading to xda-developer site to learn about custom ROM.

  • I've been using my Galaxy S for the past year and I don't think I've reached over 200mb ever (I have a 300mb data allowance). I turn wifi on when downloading apps/updating them.

Get a Galaxy S 2 which is coming out at the end of the month or early June.

It will cost you more, but it certainly is worth paying more.

Not saying this is a bad deal. But you'll be stuck with this for 2 years.

  • Do u consider Nokia N8??? anyone? is it a good phone???
it is also on the same plan $29 with 2 months free.

    • if you don't really need those 'smart' functions of a typical 'smart' phone, i would recommend getting N8, as it's got superb camera function and the rest (like calling, texting) would just be the same with other phones.
