I'm a bit of a noob when it comes this sort of thing - is there any way to connect this to a network without attaching it to a PC?
If your router support usb devices ( many router supports it), plug it to the usb behind the routher and configure it from Routher settings.
But does the router support a drive the size of 4TB. Some old routers might not like a drive over 2TB in size. That is the question.
Since it neither has an Ethernet port on it nor WiFi then the answer is an astounding no. It has to be connected to a PC.
What you're wanting is a cloud drive which costs a lot more.
Except the Raspberry Pi can’t do true 1gbs and the network shares a bus with all USB ports. So performance as a NAS is limited. Might be fine though depending on your usage.
