Great price for an Alienware with a GTX1070.
Was going to post it with the last 20% off Dell but discount was capped at $300.
This time around, you can get the full 20% off.
The CPU and GPU are both a generation old but still excellent for gaming.

  • Disappointing they didn't ditch the separate SSD/HDD and just toss a middle of the range 1TB NVME drive in it.
Who comes up with these specs?
Does anyone really think them through?

    • +2

I think this works well in practice. Faster SSD with bigger storage for games. OS speed makes a huge improvement in experience.

  • How do you reckon this would go for low-level video editing?

  • Nice looking deal, and I was contemplating buying with the previous max $300 discount as well. If it was offering the full 20% discount, I probably would have bought it.

However, I have since impulse purchased this generation old Acer Predator Helios 300. Cost was $899, and it stated it came with a Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum RGB mouse. Unfortunately this was an error in the listing. They have offered me a refund of $70 or return and get a refund of the $899. Condition of the laptop is pretty much immaculate.

Would you take the $70 refund(making it effectively $829) and keep the laptop, or return the laptop and put the $899 toward this?

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

    • I would go for the refund, but really depends what you will be playing on it and if you have the money to spend on top, the 2gb 1060 card probably wont get you much on the newer titles but older ones like i would be playing it'd be fine.

Other points to consider is that the acer is refurb and 90 days of warranty that usually is a bit scary for me on gaming laptops as they MAY have a shorter life span with the heat etc.

Again just my personal opinion :)

      • Thanks for the answer, certainly a decision to make. Also an error in the listing as it's a 6GB card, as well as stating the i7-7700HQ is only dual core..

        • hehehe for me that'd be more than enough but yeh at over double the price it's a tough decision!

          • @scud70: Yeah, I think either is overkill for me as well haha. I just wanted something that I could use to replace my desktop as it's on its last legs (2011 build), as well as being portable.

            • @johnno1987: If your not going to play games on it then stick with Acer it'll be fine for a desktop replacement, as for being portable thats borderline with both of these .. hehehe "portable around the house" is how id describe them lolll

  • I wish these didn't look so tacky, once you surpass the douchebag age you really just want the specs in a discreet cover.

    • It's getting there some Dell and Lenovo have tried to not make it look like a gaming laptop on the outside

      • Both brands usually try to compact the non-gaming look gaming laptops - usually ends up with poor thermals.

I'd be happy with a plain looking super fat laptop, as long as they get the thermals right it's pretty much what I want. Portability for me can be a 10kg behemoth if needed

  • 60hz panel? Seriously…

  • +1

I've done a bit of research and this actually seems to be really good value. The 1070 in this chasis is pretty high performance. Reading the notebookcheck review for this compared to the new RTX 2070 Max-Q Razer Blades, the performance is very similar. If you can get past the bulkier size and 60Hz display I think this is quite a good buy.

    • It’s a newer model. Size is 17in instead 15in. Has an 8th gen instead of 7th gen CPU. Same graphics card and RAM. A bigger SSD. It’s about $1k more which isn’t worth it IMO.
